E. Aided First School is situated to the north west of the town Dorchester and serves a number of villages, where the housing is both privately owned and rented. The pupils come from a range of social backgrounds. It has 61 pupils aged between four and 9 years and is smaller than other schools. There is a similar number of boys and girls. Pupils’ attainment on entry is broadly average with a wide range of attainment. At the time of the inspection there was one child under five. There are no pupils with English as an additional language. Sixteen per cent of pupils have been identified as having special educational needs, which is below average. Most children attend pre-school provision. The school also admits pupils into the school at the beginning of the academic year in which they have their fifth birthday. Five per cent of pupils are in receipt of free school meals, which is below average. The number of pupils has fallen since the last inspection as a direct result of a decline in the agricultural economy locally. HOW GOOD THE SCHOOL IS The school is led effectively by the acting headteacher, who, in a short time, has raised expectations of what pupils can do. The governing body make a very good and effective contribution to the work of the school. The quality of provision is good, with good teaching and satisfactory standards attained by the majority of pupils with a significant number attaining good standards. Assessment procedures and the use of assessment to inform teaching are being developed. The school gives good value for money. WHAT THE SCHOOL DOES WELL ¨ The school is very well led by the acting headteacher ¨ The very good commitment, support and involvement of the governing body. ¨ The quality of teaching for the oldest pupils. ¨ Community links and those with parents are good. ¨ There is good provision for pupils’ personal development. ¨ The good standards attained in music. WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED ¨ Assessment procedures for all subjects and the consistent use of assessment to inform teaching. ¨ The use of monitoring and evaluation to identify the professional needs of all staff and areas for improvement as part of the ongoing development of the school. ¨ The timetable for the review of the different subjects and aspects of the school’s work. ¨ The procedures for identifying and meeting the special educational needs of individual pupils. The areas for improvement will form the basis of the governors’ action plan Piddle Valley Church of England First School - 9 HOW THE SCHOOL HAS IMPROVED SINCE THE LAST INSPECTION Since the school was last inspected in January 1996 there have been two changes of headteacher and some long term staff absences. The school moved to a new building in June 1999. There has been a satisfactory improvement since the last inspection. The acting headteacher and governing body have successfully addressed some issues from the last inspection. Curriculum organisation is now satisfactory. Classroom monitoring is being developed. Assessment procedures are improving and the school recognises the need to continue to develop procedures for the assessment of individual pupil’s achievement and the use of this to inform planning for future learning. The school is now well placed to make further improvements. STANDARDS The table shows the standards achieved by 7 year olds based on average point scores in National Curriculum tests. compared with Performance in: all schools similar Key schools 1997 1998 1999 1999 Reading A A D E well above average A above average B Writing C A E E* average C below average D Mathematics C A C D well below average E very low E* The information shows that in 1999, for pupil’s aged 7 standards in reading were below the national average and well below the average for similar schools. In writing, standards were well below the national average and very low in comparison with the average for similar schools. In mathematics, standards were broadly in line with the national average and below the average for similar schools. Standards seen during the inspection were satisfactory for the majority of pupils who reach the required standards in reading, writing, mathematics and science for pupils aged 7 at the end of Key Stage 1 and good for pupils aged 9 at the end of Year 4 with a significant number of pupils attaining higher levels. Standards in information technology are satisfactory. The numbers of pupils undergoing national testing and assessment are too small and variable from year to year to provide a reliable guide to the overall trend of standards throughout the school. The number in each year group varies considerably, also the number of pupils with special educational needs. In this small school this has a significant impact when comparing performance both nationally and with similar schools. The school has set clear and appropriate targets which make good use of baseline assessments made when children start school. PUPILS’ ATTITUDES AND VALUES Aspect Comment Attitudes to the school Good. Pupils listen attentively and most respond well in lessons. In their personal development, pupils willingly take responsibility for tasks and show initiative, such as when undertaking independent research and supporting different charities.     Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan 2018 to 2033 As modified by the Independent Examiner November 2016 Post Examination Draft–January 2018 Produced by Piddle Valley Parish Council with the help of local residents Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan – 2018 to 2033 How this Plan came about Back in 2012, the idea of a Neighbourhood Plan for the Piddle Valley was discussed at the Parish Council meetings. A small working group was formed. Having done some research and looked at other examples, the group wanted to be sure that there was enough support for a Neighbourhood Plan, as it was clear that producing a plan would take a lot of community time and effort. So the group put articles in the Piddle Valley News and Views to try to explain what a Neighbourhood Plan was, and what it could achieve, and organised presentations at the school in October that year. They gave local residents the chance to vote whether or not they wanted a Neighbourhood Plan. They explained that - If nothing is done, then future planning decisions that affect the Valley will be taken by the District Council as they see fit. If the Valley has its own Neighbourhood Plan, which sets out our wishes for things we both do and do not wish to see occur, then the District Council have to take those views into account in reaching their decision. The Plan will take a lot of time and work to prepare, including further consultations, and must eventually be approved by a referendum of the Valley residents. It is important therefore for the Parish Council to know that there is support in principle for the work involved.

The slopes and crests are mostly comprised of shallow well-drained calcareous silty soils over chalk, whilst the valley bottoms are made up of deep calcareous and non-calcareous fine silty soils. Due to its geology and topography, the Piddle Valley is prone to high water tables during prolonged wet periods.

PTA events coming up include a Royal Wedding Street Party which all are welcome to attend. The paint party for the playground equipment has been discussed and the date is to be agreed shortly. Thanks were expressed for attending the meeting. County Cllr Update County CHr Haynes gave an update on the following; • The proposed warding areas have been discussed and the new figure could be 3756 + or - 10% but nothing has been agreed as yet. • Apologies for May meeting. District Cllr update District Cllr Haynes gave an update on the following; • The Old Chapel property - District Cllr Tim Yarker can attend parish council meeting to explain what can happen with this property. Advised to contact Empty Homes Officer to ask what he can do. • SMARTS enforcement - letter received confirming this case is now closed. Police/Home watch update PCSO Alison Oonnison was unable to attend the meeting but sent an update confirming that there have been no reported crimes during the last month. An update on the changes to the PCSO's was also included in the update which Alison confirmed that she has chosen to remain as a Police Community Support Officer and at this time is awaiting the decision as to where she will be based.

Democratic Period i) Dorset Councillor update Dorset Cllr Haynes gave an update on Dorset Council including the following; The Council’s restructuring is continuing with the second tranche now in consultation. Local Plan – a new Dorset-wide Local Plan for the new Dorset Council needs to be progressed and the aim is to have this complete by early 2024. The Dorset Council cabinet has agreed to stop progressing work on the Local Plan Reviews of the former District Councils, although information and evidence gathered as part of those reviews would be used for the new review. There are implications to this regarding National Parks within the AONB and the Emergency Climate bill. The existing Local Plan will remain in place until the new plan has been formed.     MUSEUM FRIEND Newsletter for the Friends of Lyme Regis Philpot Museum Issue no. 30 July 2017 CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Dear Friends Mission accomplished! By the time you read this we hope that our Mary Anning Wing museum extension will have been completed, a cause for great celebration. Our museum Director, David Tucker, was recruited by the Trustees to oversee the planning, grant raising and building of the extension and we give him credit and our thanks for accomplishing this task. We understand that navigating the multitudinous requirements of the Heritage Lottery Fund is no mean achievement. Details of the official opening and related activities will be published on the museum’s website. It is all change on the Friends committee. I have been elected as Acting Chairman following the resignation of Margaret Rose after many years of dedicated service. My main task is to work with the committee with the aim of getting us into a position which will be sustainable for the next five years or so. We have made a great start following the recruitment of Angela Main and Valerie Hayward; the influx of new energy and ideas is already apparent. To complete our transformation we need three more committee members, hopefully including a potential chairman. We are a very affable bunch of people who enjoy working together to support our museum. Please contact me if you are interested in joining us. Angela will take over from me as Treasurer and Val has plunged in, all guns blazing, as Newsletter Editor, Secretary and Publicity Coordinator. Other positions and duties remain unchanged; namely: Sylvia Oliver continues as Membership Secretary; Alison Mitchell as Database Manager and general computer guru; Richard Wells as digital presentations expert and eBay sales specialist; finally but by no means least, Joe Tesoriere, our all-seasons Eminence Grise and all-purpose helper.
