The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in May, September and January. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Rex Goddard (348363), Sue Nicholas (348436), Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272)

We receive fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries daily, our prices are very competitive, so why not give us a try? We stock in-season fruit and vegetables, and can order large quantities if needed. We can supply speciality breads such as cottage loaves, French sticks and large wholemeal cobbers from Evershot Bakeries – ideal for entertaining. Balls the Butchers are happy to cut meat to individual customers’ requirements. We have a new supplier of fresh chicken, reared at Piddlehinton from ‘Piddle Valley Chicken’. The birds are given time to grow slowly on a natural diet with corn, grass and clover which gives their traditional chicken flavour and succulent meat. Living in large grassy paddocks and in small flocks these are the happiest chicken in Dorset! I support this very ethical new business and wish them well. I thank you all for your continued support of the shop and I am sure this will help it to go from strength to strength.

I received a wonderful email from a local writer/blogger recently. She moved to Piddlehinton last year and Jess Thompson and her husband were lucky enough to be the last couple to be married by Tony in the church.

Before he’d announced he was leaving she had discussed doing an interview with him for her blog - The Untold Story - as she was interested in the fact that he’d been a lawyer previous to becoming a priest. Her interview can be found at: www. theuntoldstorytold.wordpress.com. If you want to read it and do not have access to the internet, do get in touch and I will send you a copy.

We have had further communication about the advent of Superfast Broadband which can be found on page 78.

There is also an exhausting (!) read on page 66 - giving us the details of Charles Harris’ epic 100 mile run from Bath to Big Ben. Please consider donating to his cause.

Lots of events in the run up to Christmas are listed in the Diary Dates and details can be found in the many posters in this issue. Julie Bennett 07740 083657

In the late summer of 1944 sixty SAS soldiers were parachuted

into the Vosges mountains in North Eastern France – the last

bulwark of the defences of Hitler’s Reich. At mission’s end thirty one SAS were listed as “missing – fate unknown”. The man who had commanded this mission refused to let their

killers escape justice.

Damien Lewis has written -‐ a dozen non fiction books and thrillers, topping bestseller lists worldwide. His books include the Special Forces classics Operation Certain Death, Bloody Heroes and Cobra Gold, plus the Sunday Times No. 1 bestseller Zero Six Bravo. He has raised tens of thousands of -‐ pounds for services related charities, and several of his books are being produced as feature films PIDDLEHINTON VILLAGE HALL 7.30pm FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27th TICKETS £7 or £5 for under 18s available from: Terry Cowley 01300 348247 Katherine Message 07765 211729 and the Piddletrenthide Village Shop

PROCEEDS FROM THE TALK TO SUPPORT THE PIDDLEHINTON TWINNING ASSOCIATION 26 www.piddlevalley.info Letters to the editor~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is with much sadness I am unable to return to Piddletrenthide Post Office and Shop. My time spent in the Post Office and shop has been a very important chapter in my life and I will miss seeing you all every day. I would like to thank Carol and James Boughey for giving me the opportunity to be part of “saving our village Post Office and Shop” at a time when the future of the business was unsure and which is now a busy place again. A special thank you to Bronwen and Sue for all their support and help whilst working with me especially when my leg was hurting. Finally I would like to thank you all for your kindness during my illness. All the get well cards, flowers and chocolates and visits which were most appreciated when I was unable to move very far due to my illness. I am now able to work with a few restrictions, so I am going return to my previous career of hairdressing, manicuring and pedicures at home. Looking forward to seeing you all out and about now that I can get out myself. If I do not manage to see you around, I would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year. Caroline Kellaway GREAT NEWS for Piddlehinton!

Piddlehinton Parish have received a very generous donation from Farm Power who installed the large solar panel development at Bourne Farm.

In light of this the parish councillors will be holding a meeting on November 13th 2015 at 7pm, in Piddlehinton Village Hall, and welcome you to attend with ideas on how this money can be distributed for the benefit of Piddlehinton.

36 www.piddlevalley.info Support And Information For Older People

If you are over 50 there is a free resource you can call on to help you find out what you need to know about services and activities that are important to you in your community. It is called POPP (Partnership for Older People Programme). POPP is funded by DCC and NHS Dorset to improve the quality of life for older people by ensuring that opportunities are put in place locally to promote health and wellbeing, independence , preventative services and activities . Locally there are two people you can contact: Ellis Ford – who is what is termed a POPP Wayfinder and Julian English – a POPP Champion.

Ellis will provide one-to-one support and signposting and can visit people in their own homes. He has a wealth of information and relevant contacts at his fingertips and if he doesn’t know the answer to any question immediately he will find out.

Julian challenges the way that the statutory bodies deliver services to older people, so if you have any concerns you should raise them with him .Julian will also support groups to fund new activities and initiatives that help older people remain active, healthy and involved with their local community. In Cerne POPP has seed funded the Giant Social and the Community Defibrillator .

Alton Pancras

AP Recent movements in the northern territory include Will Hiscocks, Barcombe Farm manager and Zoe moving into number 1 Barcombe Farm Cottages, with gamekeeper Barry moving from there to the newly renovated Little Holcombe bungalow. They met at Reading University, now Zoe is studying at Taunton to qualify as a teacher.

AP In the village’s midlands, new arrivals at Hill View, the southernmost of the four bungalows. Ken and Lyn Soul have moved here from Weybridge, Surrey via Charlton Down and if you see them on their antiques stall at Dorchester Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, please say hello

AP In the south, welcome to Suzanne and Carlo Vettese at Cowslip Cottage from Surbiton. Carlo has been a rally driver at Silverstone, competed in national karting and hopes to add off-roading to his CV. Suzanne is here for the country walking with her dog Alfie and you may see them bi-monthly delivering News & Views at the south end of the village, having answered our plea for helpers.

AP A new PVN&V delivery team for our village is taking shape, so our thanks to Michelle Simpson of Trentfield in northern Piddletrenthide who, with her dog, also offered her delivery services.

AP No Alton Pancras resident appeared in the original Magna Carta of 1215 – but one featured in the official programme of Magna Flora 2015, held at Salisbury Cathedral and visited by thousands. Susan Dean, representing Alton St Pancras, was part of a large team from the Diocese which spent a year designing then building the stunning archways of flowers which filled the Cathedral for a week in September.

AP Sally Dangerfield raised £290 in sponsorship by visiting six churches in the recent Ride & Stride fund-raiser, £145 of which went to our church. She also organised the Harvest Supper, with this year’s auctioneer Rupert Edwards helping to raise £333, of which £220 was donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

AP There are two teams of locals who keep our church clean and tidy inside and out and compliments about this are often recorded in the visitors’ book. One-such recently was Winifred Driver nee Coulthard of Potters Bar, visiting the graves of Florence Marion and Alfred J, once of Colescote, Piddletrenthide. Alfred Coulthard was the author of Piddle in Harness, listing watermills including the Domesday Alton Mill and waterwheels at Austral (1840-1912) and Barcombe (1890-1912) Farms.

[email protected] 40 www.piddlevalley.info Event in Piddletrenthide at The Memorial Hall Travelling Light Strictly Balti Ballroom dancing is not the only humiliation heaped on Saikat by his ambitious parents. There's catechism and Latin too. And no-one gets his name right, ever. Join Saikat as he dances precariously through his dual-identity childhood, torn between the familiar sights of Birmingham and the mysteries of Bangladesh. Meet werewolves in the playground, nuns in the corridors and tangerines in the dancehall. 'Strictly, Balti' takes a humorous look at what it means to be British from someone who had to learn the hard way. "Superbly acted and tenderly told" The Public Reviews Audience Feedback from the Edinburgh Fringe: “Touched my heart! Was expecting a cracking comedy but found much more” “Wonderful show ... lovely story and mesmerised by your performance. Brilliant. A definite must see show. “Fascinating how this young man had everyone gripped, brought laughter and sadness to his show. True genius. Brilliant.” “This is a stunning piece of work by a master storyteller. Saikat had the audience spellbound from his first words to his last.” “One of the finest shows I've ever seen at the Fringe, and simply one of the best pieces of theatre I've ever seen.” “Beautiful, poetic, glorious storytelling - Go see!” Web: travellinglighttheatre.org.uk Tickets £8, £5 u18s, £22 family of four tel (01300) 348247 or from the Post Office Saturday 21st November 2015, 7.30pm www.piddlevalley.info 41 Are you looking for Christmas Presents, Local Produce, Cakes?

Hilary French 01305 848501 ‘Im and ‘Im ‘Im and ‘Im is the name of a folk duo: Allen Knott on guitar and Steve Kinnersly on keyboard, who, ably assisted by their ‘roadie’ and sound engineer, James Knott, on 18 September performed an evening of Folk and Fun at the Village Hall, Piddlehinton to a large and enthusiastic audience. The first half included the familiar Nightingale, Lincolnshire Poacher, Widecombe Fair and Farmers Boy and a comic poem by Allen called ‘The Melstock Band’. Island in the Sun brought a touch of the Caribbean and was followed by a novel version of Lord of the Dance and Grandfather’s Clock. The first Half concluded with Linden Lea and English Country Garden – with an additional verse to depict the real, as opposed to the idealised picture. By now it was clear that Allen had a strong voice perfectly matched to the material and was an adept exponent of 12 string guitar while Steve provided a melodic and rhythmic accompaniment Then it was time to enjoy an excellent supper and wine.

The second half opened with Dorset is Beautiful and another poem, ‘E weren’t all bad. Steve then had a solo spot when he introduced a complex ‘gigge’ by Dr John Bull and invited audience participation to demonstrate an Elizabethan dance called la Volta. This dance was originally considered very risqué until performed by the Queen and the Earl of Leicester. It involved leaps and lifts where the man gripped the woman by her left thigh and ‘below the busk’ – look it up – it’s worse than you think! The audience, who had sung along to the choruses from the start, now joined Allen with increased volume as with barely a pause we sang Drink up thee Cider, Fling it Here (which described the unfortunate consequences of a defective dung-spreader), Quartermaster’s Stores, Coming Round the Mountain, My Bonnie lies over the Ocean and Ilkley Moor Baht ‘At. The evening concluded with a reflective, quiet number called Strangest Dream. Folk purists might complain about the use of amplified instruments but to do so would miss the point. This was popular music, performed with great skill and energy where the audience was an integral part of the experience. I cannot remember when I last enjoyed such a glorious and uninhibited sing-along.

Blood Donation

You may have heard recently that NHS Blood & Transplant are redoubling efforts to recruit new blood donors, because there has been a 40% drop in new recruits in the past year compared to 2004-2005. This downward trend in new recruits joining the donor register is causing great concern because if it continues there will be a blood supply crises. At the moment only about 3–4% of the current eligible population are regular donors.

Dorset Trading Standards

Dorset says no to loan sharks The Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) working in partnership with Dorset Trading Standards have teamed up with advice and support services across Dorset to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal lenders, also known as loan sharks.

During November organisations across the county including Weymouth College, East Dorset Council, Homestart and care providers will be hosting training sessions and delivering the anti loan shark message.

The IMLT investigates and prosecutes illegal money lending criminal activity. They also help people understand finances so they so they are aware that there are other options available and how to access legitimate forms of credit, making them less vulnerable to loan sharks in the first place.

An estimated 310,000 households across the country are in debt to a loan shark. These criminals usually appear friendly at first but quickly trap their borrowers into spiralling debt. As the debts can’t legally be enforced many lenders will resort to the most extreme and callous methods to enforce repayment including threats, violence and intimidation. Paperwork is rarely offered so victims are often in the dark as to how much they are actually paying.

Jacqui Kennedy, head of the IMLT says “If you or anyone you know has been approached by a loan shark, we need to know. The IMLT has been very successful in prosecuting illegal lenders; we know there are more out there and we need your www.piddlevalley.info 49 support. Please report them, so we can stop them. Loan sharks should never be a consideration if you need to borrow money. We urge you to contact our hotline 24/7 on 0300 555 2222 with any information – calls are confidential, and can also be anonymous. The team also offers victim support for anyone involved with a loan shark. We are here to help you – it’s the loan shark who is in trouble”

If you’d like to book a FREE training session for your organisation please contact your local LIAISE Officer – Lin Fisher by emailing [email protected] or calling 07825 904 587.

Gardens Club Harvest Supper

After a sumptuous Harvest Supper spread, more than forty members of the Gardens Club sat back to be bemused and amused by Larry & Sue Skeats’ Call My Bluff quiz. The final scores revealed that guessing the true purposes of implements from the Skeats’ Bygones Collection was too challenging for most of us but caused plenty of hilarity. The Skeats offer their entertainment to raise funds for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and have so far contributed over £23,000. Their fee and a collection after their session with us added £138 more to the cause. If you would like to book them for an event, call 01963 362482.

Gardens Club Talk On Gardens Of New Zealand Monday 30th November

Rosemary Legrand, who will give this talk, came last year to tell us about a botanical tour of Bhutan. Dogs A recent complaint of continued dog fouling in a public place was made by a local resident to the Dog Warden Service., who visited both parties within an hour or so of the call. They also advised that “you’ll be seeing us more in future”. The Wardens have the power to report offenders for prosecution if fouling occurs. Would dog owners please ensure that they take suitable plastic bags with them when they exercise their pets, then dispose of them either in their own bin at home, or one of the public waste bins in the valley. Abandoning the bag by the side of a path is not acceptable. Please note, the bin at the children’s playground is not a public bin and has to be emptied by the Parish Council, so should not be used for dog waste ( or used nappies, either, please!)

There have also been reported incidents of a dog not being under proper control and being aggressive to others, particularly around the Playing Field. Please ensure your pet is properly restrained and under control at all times, as failure to do so is also an offence. Any member of the public can report fouling or other dog problems to the District Council Dog Warden service on 01305 251010

The Police will then take action on repeat offenders as appropriate.

Piddlehinton currently has 8 volunteers, Piddlehinton has 7. Each session requires at least 3 trained volunteers to attend. On the early morning of September 24th (just a few weeks ago) my husband Charles Harris set out on a mammoth challenge of running 150 miles continuously, from Bath to Big Ben. ‘Continuously’ meaning that he stopped only to refill his drinks bottles, have something to eat - mainly cheese and pickle sandwiches and barbecue hula Google Mapshoops - and to stretch a bit before the next several kilometres. He expected that it https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.378276,-1.0201206,9z might take about 36 hours all in, but in the end was more like 40. He has run quite a few ultra-marathons over the past couple of years, each one longer than the last, and he wanted to top all of that training and work off with one, massive, intense and incredibly tough run - a run to beat all runs! (See inside back cover for photos.)

The motivation, other than it being a hugely personal achievement if he could pull it off, and what made him continue when otherwise he might have pulled out after he became injured through training over the summer, was to raise some money for the Kingfisher Ward at Dorchester hospital, and for the MakeGoogle a Wish Foundation. Maps Having our own three little sproglets, we have benefitted many times from the care that our local hospital provides to worried parents, so it felt very right to do something to help them a little. Make a Wish obviously does an amazing job of lending some sunshine to families with children who face the most terrible outcome from illness. Good to help them in some small way too.

So, the run was planned over many weeks and a few worrying conversations about Charles’s leg injury (tibial band problems), but after a jolly 17 then a 23 mile training run two weeks before, he decided that he was up to it and we got it organised. I met him on day one, several hours after his run began, at 4.30pm near Hungerford,

1 of 1 13/10/2015 17:28 with a boot full of every kind of possible nutritional requirement, even a sleeping bag in case he got too cold in the breaks, and a mat for stretching (neither of which he used), and then met him every 7-10km throughout the night, so seeing him really every hour and a half or so. By our 1.15am rendezvous, in a pub car park somewhere between Thatcham and Reading, I had fallen asleep in the car and woke to him tapping on the window to get in out of the cold - his teeth were chattering, he Google Maps was hunched over with coldhttps://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.378276,-1.0201206,9z and exhaustion and he couldn’t wait for a little respite. I seriously doubted that he would make it the full distance, and by then he was at about 70-80 miles, if he didn’t have some proper rest. He slept for a whole 25 minutes, rather uncomfortably with his backpack still on (too much effort and energy required to take it all off and then get it back on again), and woke, if you can call drowsily and achingly coming-to ‘waking’, with the immediate sense of dread that he had to go back out into the black night and carry on. As he stiffly and in visible pain limped off to rejoin the canal path next to the car park, I watched him go with great worry and sympathy - he looked such a lonely figure on a solitary mission. It was all Google Maps down to himself to get on with the run; nobody to encourage him on, between our checkpoints on dark country lanes, and nothing to really see either to take his mind off how boring it had become by that point. I decided to stay with him until proper daylight on the Friday, to make sure that he got safely through the night, by which time a gallant friend arrived to take over my Florence Nightingale duties. Mike Rose came out to run a section with him from Henley to Hurley at 5.45am on the second day, and then provided support so that I could drive home. There was a problem from Marlow, where Mike left him, to Maidenhead, because there was nowhere at all to replenish water supplies. Tough going. He was well and truly on his own for hours and hours, eyeing every bus stop or park bench longingly and sometimes falling asleep sitting upright in or on one! - until Richmond Park, when his brother-in-law tracked

him down and ran/walked/stumbled to the finish line with him, finally getting in to Big Ben at 11.05pm, where I met him, exhausted beyond belief, hardly able to string a few words together and so so cold. By the end of the run he had to pick his legs up to get onto and off kerbs. I have never seen him so spent, and I have seen him do many impossible things! By far this is the most bonkers event he has initiated, and hopefully the last of this scale - from now on mere 84 mile races will be the goal.

So far he has raised just over £2000 with gift aid, but he would love to raise a little more, so if you feel inclined to make a donation in support of his efforts and his incredible achievement, you can do so online at www.virginmoneygiving. com/150miler.

Every donation is really very much appreciated, so thank you in advance of your contribution. Karen Harris

54 www.piddlevalley.info www.piddlevalley.info 77 Superfast broadband arrives in the Piddle Valley~~~~~~~~~~~~

For the first time, hundreds of people in the Piddle Valley can access superfast broadband speeds through fibre broadband. Here’s an update from the superfast team to let readers know exactly what’s in place and what’s to come.

More than 300 households and businesses in Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide villages can now order a fibre broadband service. This new technology is faster and more stable than standard broadband, meaning you can do more with it. Speeds and availability will vary between properties, so when you contact a provider and ask to switch to fibre they will tell you what speed is available to you.

Zoe Smith lives in Piddletrenthide and recently signed up for fibre broadband. She said, “We used to get 6Mbps and would have to wait for things to load, but now everything is instant. Online shopping is much easier. It’s great for downloading apps and iPlayer finally works. And it’s also meant that my husband can work from home.”

More work is planned to make better broadband available to even more properties in the north end of Piddletrenthide before the end of the year.

Due to the layout of properties and network in the Piddle Valley, not all properties are able to access improved speeds through the recent upgrades. People living in Plush or White Lackington, or other areas a bit further out from where the new fibre roadside cabinets sit, might find that even though they are connected to an upgraded cabinet they are not able to access faster broadband through fibre at their property. The story is more complicated in Alton Pancras – speeds are likely to be variable and a number of properties will be too far to benefit from the phase of work to be completed shortly .

This doesn’t mean these residents will be left in ‘the dark ages’ forever. In most areas, the programme will return to connect even more properties. And the superfast team is working hard to secure more funding and implement new technologies that will extend coverage into difficult to reach areas.

Superfast Dorset announced in June an extra £3 million investment to extend speed and coverage in Dorset. This second contract means that communities that weren’t originally in the programme will gain access to better broadband by the end of 2017. This includes the Piddlehinton Enterprise Park and Plush. Plans are still only modelled and subject to change at this stage.

If you are in Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide, you might be wondering, ‘Why

78 www.piddlevalley.info should I switch?’ Switching to fibre will allow you to stream movies, back up important files, play games and keep in touch with people without overloading your broadband connection. And faster broadband speeds can cope with multiple users and devices doing different things at the same time.

Fibre broadband is now cheaper than ever, so now is the time to check with your provider to see what is on offer. And it might be worth shopping around or bundling your TV, phone and broadband to get the best value for your money. Many people are discovering that their new fibre broadband contract does not cost much more than their existing service.

If you are in Alton Pancras, you’re right to be thinking, ‘It’s all right for some, but what is being done to get my community included!?’ Where complex existing infrastructure and smaller populations have made it too expensive to reach these areas with current funding, the programme is now looking at a new technology being trialled in other programmes as a potential viable solution. This is a long term solution which will take some time to implement. An interim solution via a satellite scheme is due to be launched this year, so watch out for information from the superfast team on this.

No matter where you live, everyone can help the programme reach further by encouraging people who have access to make the switch to fibre. If the programme reaches 30% take up of fibre broadband across the county, this will unlock funding to be reinvested into the programme to extend coverage to our hardest to reach communities. The superfast team finds that a lot of people who have access don’t realise they do, or don’t realise that they have to order a new service in order to get faster broadband.

More information on how to sign up for fibre is available on the Superfast Dorset website. If it’s not with you yet, register on the website and the team will email you when it arrives. And if you have any questions, get in touch online. www.dorsetforyou.com/superfast
