The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in May, September and January. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272), Olivia Steven (348909)

Render Cleaning Ideal for: Roof Cleaning Houses Paint Removal Offices Patio Cleaning Churches Organic contamination Listed Buildings Brick and stone cleaning.

Using a super heated steam cleaner known as a ' DOFF ' machine it takes a normal water supply and can then rapidly heat it to 150 degrees. Once cleaned, the surface dries within minutes which prevents any long term damage as a result of trapped moisture. The surface being cleaned does not suffer any damaging pressure or thermal shock.

Or we can use a method called Soft washing..

We can use a chemical based cleaner for walls and roofs and patios. This is achieved by using a diluted mixture of water and a chemical based ingredient to a mixture of anything up to 50:1, this is then either sprayed on to the walls or patios and left for a period of time before being washed off with water. It can then be treated with a biocide which can keep organic matter at bay for a longer period. Once the initial clean has been done we recommend having a biocide treatment once a year to keep the surface maintained as this product can work for up to 12 months.

22 www.piddlevalley.info Window Cleaning Services

Commercial and residential window cleaning - We clean up to 80 ft from the ground using the latest water fed pole system which use purified water. Internal windows can also be cleaned using the traditional methods too.

We clean all year round in all weathers except high winds for safety reasons and operate on a 4, 8, or 12 weekly cycle, with cleaning all year round we can maintain a regular, high quality service for our clients. Gutter Emptying Services

Gutters Blocked?

Why not get in touch for a free no obligation quote to have your gutters cleared and facias and soffits cleaned. We operate from the ground using CCTV to ensure the gutters have been emptied completely, we can clean to a height of 50ft.

Gutters need to be cleared of debris in order for water to be carried away from the house so it does not cause damage to your property by potentially back filling and flowing back into the property causing damp. In order to keep them working as they should we usually book these in once or twice a year depending on the surroundings i.e.trees, hedges etc.

If you would like to book any of the above services then please contact JAMIE on Mobile – 07977106487 Email – [email protected] Home – 01305 821134 www.piddlevalley.info 23 PIDDLETRENTHIDE STORES

We receive fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries daily, our prices are very competitive, so why not give us a try? We stock in-season fruit and vegetables, and can order large quantities if needed. We can supply speciality breads such as cottage loaves, French sticks and large wholemeal cobbers from Evershot Bakeries – ideal for entertaining. Balls the Butchers are happy to cut meat to individual customers’ requirements. We have a new supplier of fresh chicken, reared at Piddlehinton from ‘Piddle Valley Chickens’. The birds are given time to grow slowly on a natural diet with corn, grass and clover which gives their traditional chicken flavour and succulent meat. Living in large grassy paddocks and in small flocks these are the happiest chicken in Dorset! I support this very ethical new business and wish them well. I thank you all for your continued support of the shop and I am sure this will help it to go from strength to strength.

Rector’s Ramblings. Harvest

Dear Reader,

Thirteen million people in the UK live below the poverty line in the UK. Individuals are going hungry for a range of reasons, low incomes, benefit delays, redundancy or receiving an unexpected bill.

Foodbanks in the UK support people in our area and across the UK that find themselves on hard times. ‘That won’t happen to me!’ Did you know the average person is three months’ salary from potential debt? A decade ago foodbanks were unheard of however, foodbank usage is at a record high. Did you know that one million people used foodbank this year?

Foodbanks rely upon the generosity of others to stock their shelves. Did you know that foodbanks receive a large amount of their stock from churches at harvest?

The Benefice of six churches has a harvest festival in each church, you are welcome to attend furthermore, harvest meals and the auction of produce brings the community together.

Maybe, you would like to give to foodbank? Should you wish to do this, then please leave ‘in-date tins or packets’ in church marked with ‘FB’. I shall collect your offering and take it to the nearest foodbank.

What food do you need?

Packets/Jars of: Tins of:

 Milk (UHT or powdered)  Meat  Cereal  Fish  Pasta/rice  Vegetables  Pasta sauce  Soup  Tea bags  Baked beans  Instant coffee  Fruit  Instant mashed potato  Rice pudding  Sugar  Sponge pudding  Biscuits and snack bars  Custard  Toilet rolls and toiletries  Jam

In 1918 Winston Churchill remarked to Siegfried Sasson that ‘War is the normal occupation of man ‘ there was a pause and he added ‘war and gardening’. Throughout the First World War, the need to garden was universal. For food. For recreation. For normality.

On the Home Front, food was desperately needed and women, children and retired gardeners filled the gaps left when men went off to fight. At the Western Front, there is the example of seedlings being raised in the Great Orangery of the Trianon at the Palace of Versailles and by October 1917, 25 million seedlings had been produced.

Men interned at Ruhleben Concentration Camp found solace in their imprisonment by starting their own Gardening Club, holding competitions and raising seeds sent to them from the RHS in . Medals were also awarded for vegetables grown in the Trenches by the soldiers.

An early stereoscopic photograph was found entitled ‘Shelters with Gardens behind them’ a path can be seen, visible are planting beds, vegetables and boundaries between each individual plot.

It was not just the English soldier who felt a need to recreate a small haven of peace and normality in the midst of war. Lothar Dietz – a philosophy student in the German army wrote ‘we fetched rhododendrons, box, snowdrops, primroses and made quite nice little flower beds. We have cleaned out the little brook which flows through the valley and some clever comrades have built little dams and constructed pretty little water-mills. We have planted bushes of willow and hazel with pretty catkins on them.’

Vita Sackville-West wrote: Small Pleasure must correct great tragedies. Therefore of gardens in the midst of war I boldly tell.

And after the war? What happened next?

36 www.piddlevalley.info Event in Piddletrenthide at The Memorial Hall Pip U&on – Adolf– The 20th Century’s most notorious tyrant is daringly and divisively brought to the stage in one of the most successful and powerful solo works ever presented. Looking uncomfortably like the Fuhrer, actor Pip UCon stands before a huge Nazi banner addressing his party faithful. He furnishes his audience with an acute anatomy of fascism; its ideological jusIficaIons; its poisoned utopias. They are in the presence of an uCerly compelling idealist, and are helplessly drawn in to his warped logic. Hitler's final performance seems over as he seCles into pre-suicidal contemplaIon. We know the rest... But Utton has reserved a sting for his tale... A sting so powerful that it pushes the audience into looking within themselves to question their own prejudice and intolerance. Utton doesn't stop in the bunker. He plumbs the very source of racism and exposes just how near the surface of our own lives lurks its insidious influence. What made Adolf Hitler so compulsive? How could any cultured person follow him to destruction, desolation and genocide to leave a long deep scar on the 20th century? How do the extremist parties of today command such huge followings all over the world? Pip Utton's internationally acclaimed play takes its audience on a journey into themselves, gently coaxing an understanding of the mindset of a nation that could allow a man such as Hitler to take control… Powerful, dramatic, challenging, divisive, illustrative and educational, ‘Adolf’ is utterly provocative and totally necessary; everyone should experience it when it tours to Dorset this autumn with Artsreach. AP AP Evelyn Ralph’s funeral at AP church was truly a family affair, all the readings presented by direct family members. Young granddaughter Caroline had interviewed Evelyn about the family’s history on her visits to the nursing home so was able to present an excellent summary of her grandmother’s early life.

AP Vic (1921-2009) and Evelyn (1925-2017) were the last of the traditional yeoman farmers, running the lord of the manor’s Austral Farm. They were also the hub of village social life, occasionally cleaning out a large barn for social events, including their own Ruby Wedding celebrations in 1990. Their retirement home, The Old Post Office, was always welcoming to passing villagers.

AP Sally Dangerfield senior is seeking sponsors-per-mile for her Ride-and-Stride walk from our church to as many churches as she can on Saturday 9 September. Our church keeps half the amount raised, the rest to Dorset Historic Churches Trust, from which we have also benefitted in times of need.

AP Eleven certificates displayed around the church organ hark back to when we regularly gained recognition in the Dorset Best Kept Village awards – but we haven’t had success since 2013. Wild hedgerows and giant roadside nettles haven’t helped. The award surely adds value to our properties when we wish to sell.

AP Perhaps that’s a suitable item for the AP village meeting 7.30pm Monday 16 October at the church, one of two annual meetings when our (volunteer) parish councillors, Bernard Clifton and Rodney Potts ask us what we want as a village, and tell us what they know.

AP Carly Hopkin and her family had a really enjoyable time at AP Fete and especially enjoyed the cream teas. Now she has acknowledged with grateful thanks a donation of £750 from the proceeds for the locally-based Lexi May Trust, of which she is a trustee, which supports children with terminal illness or life-limiting conditions.

AP Sarah Gillett and Jane Holt (nee Gillett) “came back to the church of our childhood and requested a prayer for Nanny Ward on her 100th birthday, 12 August.” Sir Michael and Lady Gillett lived at the former Rectory/Beechmead from 1949 to 1975. Dorothy Ward was nanny to their children and lived in today’s Rectory Cottage.

38 www.piddlevalley.info AP If you’re in the church or churchyard at a time when there’s no service, please leave the lantern entrance-gate open until you leave. It’s to avoid a shock for anyone entering and not expecting someone to appear from behind a memorial stone!

AP Crockers Barton, subject of a planning application recently, was in 1841 a barn used as a carpenter’s shop, barton, stable and outhouse, occupied as part of the Austral Farm tenancy, while on the yard’s south side were farm buildings and a cottage and garden occupied by George Crocker. Two remnants of its orchard can still be seen.

News from The Green We hope that you have all had a good summer and enjoyed holidays either at home or beyond. By the time you read this latest news we hope as well that you will have been down to the Green and seen and enjoyed the new boat which has been installed, very different to our old Millennium Belle. We have to say a very big thanks to Rob Murphy of Blue Lias Marine who gave us hours of his time to do the work which was needed to make this Cornish Yawl suitable as our new play boat. Thanks also must go to two of our Trustees, Alan Phillips and Martin Hawkins who also put a lot of their time and effort in and made arrangements, with Rob, to get the boat installed in its new home. We really hope that there will be many years of enjoyment using the boat. Hopefully you have seen the competition which has been running to find a name for the new boat and the winner will be announced at the Annual Millennium Green Rounders event (see below).

Sunday 24 September Annual Millennium Green Rounders, come and play, come and watch – a lovely family event (more details on the poster in this issue of News & Views). Refreshments will be available. Donations of cakes on the day would be appreciated. Also the new name for the boat will be announced along with the person who chose the name.

There are a couple more events for your diaries in support of your Millennium Green: Friday 20 October – ‘Sounds of Old Dorset’ presented by New Hardy Players and Williams Barnes Society – music, readings and Hardy play excerpts. Tickets £8 to include cheese platter supper and there will be a bar available. Again more details on the poster within this issue of News & Views.

Saturday 9 December – Annual Christmas Fair at Piddlehinton Village Hall – 10:00 – 1:00 p.m. More details in next News from The Green and November/December News & Views. www.piddlevalley.info 39 We are grateful to everyone who contributed their ideas on what we should include when we replace the now aging Play Castle next year. As a result of this we shall have swings, including a basket swing, a slide and a rope climbing structure as well as a basketball net and board. We are obtaining quotations with a view to deciding which company can provide what we want at the most competitive price. When this is decided, fundraising can begin in earnest! As prices have increased significantly since we commissioned the Play Castle in 2002, it appears that we are looking in the region of £30,000, most of which we hope will be raised through applications to grant giving trusts.

We are very grateful that many of you will have supported the Green by way of the Friends of the Green (FRoGs) Scheme whereby annual donations are made (minimum of £5 per person). September sees the time for renewal of your Friends membership. If you have not set up a Standing Order and would like to renew your Friendship for another year, donations can be sent to me at 22 Paynes Close, Piddlehinton, DT2 7TF (cheques made payable to Piddlehinton Millennium Green Trust) or handed to any Trustee. If you are able to Gift Aid your donation, you can download a form at www. gov.uk and select Gift Aid single donation or contact me and I will get a form to you.

We do have a Facebook page to keep you up to date on what is happening on the Green so type in ‘Piddlehinton Millennium Green’ and request to join.

Finally, to end this edition we are seeking one or two people who would consider becoming a Trustee of the Green. Even if you are thinking about it, please take a step forward to speak to one of the existing Trustees to find out more information. Contact details of Trustees are either on the notice board by the Green or on the village hall notice board.

PIDDLEHINTON CHURCH FETE The Fete held at West Lodge was blessed with ideal weather and broke previous records, making £5,569. It was the 100th anniversary of the Belgrave family’s arrival at West Lodge and a highlight of the day was a presentation to Susan Belgrave of a cake brilliantly modelled on the House. The ballet demonstration was a very high standard and there was a huge variety of other entertainments for everyone to enjoy – children’s sports with lovely rosettes for all the winners, dog show with special classes for rescue dogs to qualify at Buckham Fair Championships, a golf game, pony rides and lots of stalls and of course delicious teas all afternoon. The evening BBQ was enhanced by a limbo competition for the children, so by the end of the day everyone

PIDDLETRENTHIDE & PLUSH CHURCH FETE We were delighted to welcome the many people who braved the heat and attended this year’s fete. This year, it was held in the lovely garden at West House by kind permission of Dr & Mrs Martin Longley, whom we are very grateful to for allowing us such a wonderful setting. The day was a great success and we would like to say thank you to all who came along and generously supported it. And, of course, a massive thank you to all the stall holders without whom we could not hold such an event. Lots of fun was had by all, with the Duck Race once again proving popular and the Bar takings setting a record due to the weather. A provisional sum of £3,805.00 profit was raised, of which 10% will be donated to the Piddle Valley C of E First School. We all look forward to seeing you next year when the Fete will be held on Saturday 23rd June.

NATIONAL LOTTERY AWARDS FOR ALL PROVIDES FUNDING FOR NEW DOOR AND WINDOWS AT THE MEMORIAL HALL, PIDDLETRENTHIDE Once again, the Memorial Hall at Piddletrenthide has benefitted from a grant from Awards For All. In the past the Hall Kitchen and the roof have been partially or fully funded by this National Lottery fund which supports small projects of under £10,000 that provide a service or facility for a local community.

As the Memorial Hall approaches its 100th birthday it becomes a time to celebrate not only its centenary, but also as a reminder of the reason it was erected in the first place – to commemorate those local men who had lost their lives during the First World War. The small Committee has become more and more aware that the front façade was deteriorating, with draughty, partly rotten windows and an ill-fitting door – time to apply for a Grant! www.piddlevalley.info 45 Thanks to Janet Keen, who made our successful grant application, the Hall now has two made to measure windows, supplied by Newglaze of , that are in keeping with the original windows and a sturdy new door.

If anyone is thinking of asking Newglaze for a quote, the firm offers customers £50 for recommending them to a friend. If you would like to befriend the Hall and boost its funds by a welcome £50, just let Ros Charlton know (01300 348063) and she would pass your contact details on to Newglaze.

The Memorial Hall is a meeting place for a variety of local groups from the Gardening Club to a Country Dancing Group. It is also regularly booked for events, such as children’s parties and wedding receptions. It is very inexpensive to hire and the kitchen has excellent facilities, including an industrial dishwasher.

Bookings can be made by ringing Ms Diana Clears on 01300 348417.

A Cautionary Tail! Beware of Illegal Puppy Imports Britain is known as a nation of animal lovers but our love of dogs has seen an increase in illegally imported puppies from Eastern Europe.

There is a growing demand for certain breeds (pugs, French bulldogs and dachshunds to name a few), and illegally imported dogs are being trafficked by criminals as part of

46 www.piddlevalley.info www.piddlevalley.info 47 a lucrative illegal industry thought to involve many thousands of dogs each year. Illegal importers tend to advertise on the internet or in small newspaper adverts. The puppies are frequently supplied with incomplete, false or forged documents. They are often reared in poor conditions and are more likely to suffer from disease and behaviour problems.

Strict rules on animal imports are in place to protect the UK from rabies. This means dogs coming from Europe have to be vaccinated against rabies at a minimum age of 12 weeks and wait a further 21 days before they can enter the UK without the need for quarantine. They must also have a PET Passport which records their microchip number and vaccinations.

If a puppy is illegally imported, the new owner could face additional vet fees, quarantine costs as well as enduring the ordeal of having their dog taken away from them.

So how can you avoid buying an illegal dog? • Get as much information as possible about where the puppy has come from • Look for Kennel Club Assured breeders and be prepared to be put on a waiting list • If you are unable to see the puppy with its mother and litter mates, be suspicious • Watch out for breeders selling several varieties of breeds • Imported puppies must be at least 15 weeks old and have a valid PET Passport • Never buy a puppy from a car park or service station

Mail Marshals It has been estimated that seven out of ten older people in Britain are targeted by scams every month. Do you, or someone you know, receive large amounts of scam letters? Do you know what scam mail looks like? Scam mail is designed to look official and authentic, so for example, scam prize draws, lotteries, and sweepstakes letters may contain coats of arms, serial numbers, barcodes, rubber stamps and watermarks. Clairvoyant and psychic scam letters may contain fake photos of ‘psychics’, spiritual and religious imagery, and astrological and supernatural references.

If you, or someone you know, gets lots of these letters you could become a Mail Marshal for the National Trading Standards Scams Team. A Mail Marshal can be anyone who is in receipt of scam mail. Becoming a Mail Marshal can be very rewarding and fulfilling. You will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, agreeing to collect the mail. You will then be asked either to record all details of the mail received, and then place it all into pre-paid addressed envelopes which will be provided, and send it to the National Trading Standards Scams Team or, if there is too much to record, you can simply just sent it to them as it is. Mail Marshals will be issued with a certificate detailing their role.

If you would like more information about the Mail Marshal scheme, if you respond to scam mail, or if you would like to help someone who does, please contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 who will take this seriously. This helpline is the first point of contact for consumers seeking advice or wishing to report a problem to trading standards.

Transporting communities

Communities across Dorset are working together to find transport solutions that work for them.

Dorset County Council has a community transport fund that can help kick start a scheme. There is also a handy toolkit that gives helpful advice on what to think about before you start.

There are currently over 60 schemes covering 91per cent of the county. These arrange transport for social events, medical appointments and getting workers to work. They can run to regular timetables, are sometimes bookable, or can be one-offs to take people to local events or attractions.

Cllr Daryl Turner, the County Council’s Cabinet member for natural and built environment, said

“In the current financial climate the role of the County Council in subsidising public transport has had to change. Instead of imposing timetables, we are working with communities to help them find solutions that fit better and are not reliant on future funding.”

Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance

We now have stocks of 2018 Diaries and are pleased to say that the price has been held for another year at £4. We also have stocks of Christmas Cards Please contact us (01300 348120) if you would like to support your Air Ambulance by buying either or both of these items.

If you have looked skyward recently you may have noticed the much bigger, but still yellow, helicopter which is your Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. The new helicopter came into service on Monday 12 June and has a cabin area that is 25% larger than our previous aircraft. This gives our Critical Care Team which consist of a Doctor and Critical Care Paramedic full 360 degree access to the patient in flight. It is also readily equipped for night operations.

We now operate 19 hours a day (7.00am - 2.00am), seven days a week, 365 days a year. All of this is good news to those who urgently need the services of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and we thank everyone for their amazing support.

Thank you, as ever, for your ongoing support of raising £2.5 million per year to keep the service operational which equates to £2,500 per mission (and this money is raised without any Government or Lottery funding).

New members always welcome, no experience necessary, just a well-developed sense of humour as, however hard we try, we always make mistakes. We walk through every dance before putting on the music and try to match newcomers with ‘experienced’ dancers (!) so now’s the time to take up a

Summer Social There was a knife-edge prelude to this year’s summer social, as debate about the risks of holding it outdoors bounced around the internet. Courage prevailed over dubious forecasts and the whole afternoon was spent in pleasant sunshine in Richard Cake’s trim and beautifully situated garden. Richard’s hospitality was much appreciated, as was the delicious spread provided by members, and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

September & October Talks

THE TATTIE MAN COMETH! John Marshall, one of Scotland’s leading potato experts who is otherwise known as ‘The Tattie Man of Auchtermuchty’ will be our speaker on Monday 25th September. We are very fortunate to be able to hear John, thanks to Sally Condon who has persuaded him to come to Dorset on holiday and, whilst he is here, to speak to Piddle Valley gardeners. The Tattie Man is a Chelsea Gold Medallist, and that’s where Sally met him and was so impressed by his magnificent display of potato varieties that she determined to invite him to the Piddle Valley – and he accepted!

The Tattie Man

www.piddlevalley.info 53 GARDENS OF WORLD WAR I In 1918 Winston Churchill remarked to Siegfried Sassoon that ‘War is the normal occupation of man’; there was a pause and he added ‘war and gardening’. On Monday 30th October Christine Stones, a garden historian based in Sherborne, will give a talk on the gardens created on the front line (by both sides) and by British prisoners in Ruhleben Concentration Camp, as well as telling of the contributions to the war effort made by home front gardeners. Christine was a BBC producer and presenter before taking the Bristol University Masters degree in Garden History, graduating in 2004.

Non-members are welcome at these talks, entry £2 including refreshments. They are at 7.30pm in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall.

Piddle Valley Over 60s

7th September will be our last outing of the season and will be to the Swanage Railway. There will be a fish and chip lunch first at Swanage.

On Saturday 7th October we will be holding our Michaelmas Coffee Morning with stalls selling bric-a-brac and home made cakes and there will be a raffle. This is open to all. We would welcome any donations for the stalls or for raffle prizes. Please come and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Twinning

The Twinning presents: SONGS AND TALES FROM THE SEA

The renowned WAREHAM WHALERS will sing a selection of traditional sea shanties that are guaranteed not only to raise the roof but to stir the emotions. Dorset born fisherman Neville Copperthwaite will also give a short, illustrated talk about the Lyme Bay Marine Reserve, the first in the British Isles to be so designated.

Come on board and enjoy an evening of salt spray, wonderful songs and tales from the Dorset coast.

Join us on October 7th, 7.30pm, Piddle Valley First School. Licensed bar, with canapes. Tickets available from Piddletrenthide Shop or 348670. £8 (£5 children )

The Twinning held a very successful Quiz on June 24th in the Memorial Hall. Huge thanks to Sue Payne and everyone who supported us. It was a ‘ quiz within a quiz’ with teams from outside the Valley competing for the Dorset Twinning Association

54 www.piddlevalley.info shield and local teams playing for fun and a small prize. Donated raffle prizes were very generous: our thanks to The Poachers, Poundbury Garden Centre and Waitrose. A pair of runaway horses outside the hall added to the entertainment and were looked after by the experienced equestrians amongst us!

Our Summer Barbecue was held in fine weather on Jock’s Paddock Plush on August 4th. Many thanks to Ann, Sue and Paul for organising the party and to all who brought puddings and salads.

We’d love to see new members this Autumn – 2018 will be the 25th anniversary of our twinning with Longueville and many events are planned. Jo Thornton 348670 for info.

Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Meetings The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Meetings start with a “Democratic period”, during which any local resident may personally raise direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting. Please also note that Minutes of meetings are published on the website, so if you do not wish your name to appear, please state this before beginning speaking.

Next meetings are: 26th September. 31st October

Waste Collection arrangements General Waste & Food – alternate Fridays September 8th & 22nd, October 6th & 20th Recycling & Food – alternate Fridays. – September 1st, 15th, 29th. October 13th & 27th.

IRONMAN 70.3 – Road Closures Ironman 70.3 will be held on the Sunday 17th September. The organisers are expecting approximately 2500 entries. The Cycle Race stage will involve closure of the B3142 & B3143 from to Kings Stag, the Holwell Rd from Kings Stag to Middlemarsh and the C12 top Sherborne Rd from Middlemarsh to Charminster, effectively from 0730 to 1300hrs. The organisers assure us however that the roads will be opened progressively behind the last cyclists as soon as possible, to reduce impact as much as possible.

www.piddlevalley.info 55 It must be stressed that the road closures have legal authority and we understand that the Police will be enforcing this. Anyone driving on the closed roads may face prosecution and their insurance may not be valid.

For safety reasons, NO VEHICLES will be allowed on the closed roads, other than for “Blue light” vehicles and escorted private vehicles for which specific prior arrangements have been made with the Race Organisers. It is therefore essential that anyone who needs visits from Nurses, Carers etc, or businesses for whom access during the Sunday morning is critical, makes direct contact with the Organisers. Anyone who wants to make personal journeys is advised to depart before the roads are closed or delay departure until the roads are re-opened. Anyone requiring medical help should call 999. Vets will be escorted through the Closures, but contact with Race Control must be made in advance.

Email: [email protected] or phone: 03330 11 66 00

A plan of the Road Closures involved was included in the previous issue of News & Views. The Parish Council has further copies of the plan, if you require one – please contact your Councillor. We also hope to have copies available in the local Pubs, churches and the Shop. Please study this and retain for reference. An updated plan has been issued by the Organisers, with minor changes to timing and closures.

They will also publicise traffic management advice, information and rolling updates on www.dorsetforyou.com/travel-dorset/ironman. Please keep checking back as more information becomes available.

Also, please see our website www.piddlevalley.info for the latest plans and information.

We will be updating the “Valley traffic information” page of the www.piddlevalley.info website as any further information is received. Please do monitor the page for changes – which will also be flagged via the “Latest News” button.

Aqua-sacs Anyone who is at risk of surface water flooding and might have a need for sandbags to keep water out of their property may be interested in this product (other similar products are also available). It is a package of lightweight sacks filled with a water absorbing gel. They are used in the same way as the traditional sandbag, the gel absorbing water and swelling to form a good seal to the building. The advantage is that, when dry, they are much smaller to store than sandbags and lighter to handle. Anyone interested in the product can find more details on the internet ( search for Aqua-sac). There is a “youtube” video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fB94baTBik

56 www.piddlevalley.info NB: The Parish Council makes no recommendation about this or any other product or supplier. There are other similar products available and it is the responsibility of the individual purchaser to satisfy themselves as to its suitability for themselves. It is also the responsibility of the property owner to arrange their own flood protection.

Piddletrenthide Post Office It is understood that the Shop is inviting support by a petition for the continuation of the full Post Office counter service within the Shop. The Parish Council have confirmed its support for the retention of this service and supports the petition.

Bus Service With the withdrawal of the 307 bus service from the 21st July, there is no longer a Public Bus service through the Valley to Dorchester. It is claimed that this is through lack of demand. The Parish Council has been pressing for this to be reconsidered and gathering evidence as to the actual level of use. If you are no longer able to travel because of the loss of the service, please contact your Parish Councillor and let them have the details. We may be able to make a case for a limited service to be provided, but need details of what journeys would be made.

Meanwhile, DCC have arranged for a temporary Community Bus service to run from Piddletrenthide to Trinity St. on Wednesday & Fridays, 10.00hrs in, 1300hrs back. Booking in advance is essential. Full details are on a separate page in the magazine.

We understand the service could possibly be extended further up the Valley, possibly to Alton Pancras, if there is sufficient demand.

If you would be a regular user of this service, or would use it if extended to Alton Pancras, please let your Parish Councillor know, so we can co-ordinate responses and keep pressure on DCC to reconsider the public bus service support.

PCSO Alison Donnison – revised visit times Alison has revised her visits to the Valley and now will be calling at Piddletrenthide Shop & Piddlehinton Village Hall alternately on the third Thursday of the month, starting on 17th August and 21st September respectively, from 1430 to 1500hrs.

Upper Piddle Flood Management Scheme (2017) have advised us that they are pleased to advise that their Flood Risk Management Team has secured funding from Defra to undertake a Natural Flood Management (NFM) Project in the Upper Headwaters of the . They will be working in partnership with the Environment Agency, Wessex Water, ’s Catchment Sensitive Farming Team and other key stakeholders, to reduce the risk of downstream flooding in the Piddle Valley by ‘slowing the flow’ of surface water run-off www.piddlevalley.info 57 through NFM interventions, while also providing benefits to biodiversity that NFM will bring. This is in the very early stages but they will be looking to arrange stakeholder meetings and community “drop-ins” in the Autumn, and they will advise us of these nearer the time. Further information can be found at www.piddlevalley.info/pc.php

58 www.piddlevalley.info Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

10th October 1917 Stoker (1st Class) Thomas Charles House (Alton Pancras) Royal Navy

Thomas Charles House, the only man on the Alton Pancras memorial to have served in the Royal Navy, was 35 when he died of sickness on 10th October 1917.

He held the rank of Stoker, 1st Class. The title gives an indication of his duties on board ship. In the days of coal-burning warships, the stokers worked at keeping the boilers fed with coal. It was filthy, hot and dangerous toil. Deep in the bowels of the ship, they would have no chance if the ship was damaged in battle and was sinking.

Thomas was the son of Thomas and Blanche House. He was married to Beatrice, whose address is recorded as 5, York Place, Portsea, Portsmouth. He had two younger brothers who were also stokers in the Royal Navy. Bertie House was in H.M.S. Greenwich and Frederick was in H.M.S. Emperor of India. Both survived the war. There was also a sister – Florence Grace.

Thomas House served on H.M.S. Victory in the Battle of Jutland on 31st May–1st June 1916. It has been described as the one great naval battle of the War, in which the British Grand Fleet and the German High Fleet fought a largely indecisive action in the North Sea. Although the Royal Navy suffered most losses, it gained the strategic victory as the German fleet could no longer operate in the North Sea without risking destruction.

Records show that Thomas House died of disease from exposure. He would have been a patient in the Royal Navy Hospital at Haslar, Portsmouth and is buried in Portsmouth Cemetery.

12th October 1917 Private William Eli Park (Piddlehinton) 6th Battalion The Dorsetshire Regiment

William Eli Park was born in Piddlehinton in 1880, the eldest child of Eli and Ellen Park. He had two sisters, Rosalind Anne, born in 1892 and Lily Eliza, 1897.

From his regimental number (10105) he would have been one of the original volunteers to join the Dorsetshire Regiment from Piddlehinton, possibly as a result of Capt. Astell’s recruiting meeting in the School on 1st September 1914. He served at Gallipoli with the 5th Battalion but later was transferred to the 6th Battalion. www.piddlevalley.info 59 He was an old soldier who had seen service on the Somme when, on 6th October 1917, the 6th Dorsets went into the Battle of Passchendaele which started on the 31st July and ended on the 10th November. The intention of this battle was to take the Pilckem and Passchendaele Ridges to the north-east of Ypres and then break out into open country beyond. The battle was an appalling catastrophe. German defences were stronger than anticipated and the weather was the worst for 75 years.

The 6th Dorsets held a support line near the Langemarck and the Regimental History describes conditions as “...this watery waste, blasted with shells. Skies and soil alike were horrible; there was nothing but mud, water, rain and cold, numbing all sensations save that of pain. The universal wet defied all provision for keeping dry or for drying clothes.”

On Friday 12th October, 7.9mm of rain was recorded. That day, 6th Dorsets had eight men killed by shellfire. One of these was William Park. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing of Passchendaele in the Tyne Cot Cemetery. There are 34,888 names on this Memorial of men whose bodies were never found on the Ypres Salient from August 1917 to the end of the War.

WIlliam Eli Park was 27 years old. Bin Roy / 01300 348227

www.piddlevalley.info 61 Defibrillators in the Piddle Valley

Great News… thanks to the combined efforts of the Piddle Valley Community our fundraising has reached just over £9,500. This amount will enable us to fund this project for the next 9 years. Special thanks to those clubs/organisations/individuals who have committed to an annual donation. We also need to thank Hardy Signs for producing, free of charge, the signs that you will soon see around the Villages directing you to your nearest defibrillator.

Where we are All defibrillator sites are now registered with the Community Heart beat Trust’s free on-line facility (WebNos) for the maintenance and management of the defibrillators. This also ensures that the Ambulance Service is aware of the locations and the availability of the defibrillators. www.communityheartbeat.org.uk

Where we would like to be There is an additional Service that we will be purchasing to make this project complete.

VILLAGE EMERGENCY TELEPHONE (V.E.T.S) This is an additional service which will provide a single telephone number to access help for a resident or visitor in an emergency. The idea is that a person dials 999 and then the VETS number. The VETS number immediately rings out to ten designated people (good samaritans) in the village simultaneously. When one of the designated individuals accepts the emergency call the nine other phones stop ringing. A third of all 999 calls are from lone rescuers, so getting help to them quickly is important. In the Piddle Valley, many householders live alone or remotely, so the VETS number will provide added support and reassurance. The responder could be asked to help in a number of ways. Anything from directing ambulances to a property or fetching the defibrillator from its location. Alternatively, if the casualty is on a remote footpath the responder will be able to advise emergency service staff. Over the years, paramedics have experienced repeated difficulties locating properties and casualties in the Piddle Valley. This has resulted in delays and paramedics running on foot to access properties on occasions. The VETS number will enable residents to support each other in any kind of emergency and get help to individuals quickly.

Due to the geography of the Piddle Valley we would like to purchase 3 V.E.T.S systems to cover the following areas:

Piddlehinton & White Lackington • Piddletrenthide & Plush • Alton Pancras.

The scheme is free for the first year, and then a set up fee of £45, and then costs £100/year. We will be asking those that have already had defibrillator familiarisation training if they will be willing to be part of this scheme, but would welcome anyone who is willing to take part in this scheme to contact one of your Parish Councillors who can forward your details to the defibrillator group.

Training... A further date for training will be arranged in September/October. We will contact those on the waiting list, but anyone else wishing to take part in training please contact any of your Parish Coun- cillors who can forward your details to the defibrillator group.

The Best & Worst Surgeries in Dorset Many of you will have seen the article on 1st August in the Dorset ECHO ranking the GP surgeries in Dorset. We are delighted to have been ranked 9th out of 96! Also, 99% of patients asked said that we had the ‘most helpful receptionists’ and 99% of patients asked were satisfied with our opening hours. Many thanks to all of our patients who took part in the survey. We will continue to try and meet these high standards.

Flu Clinics You are probably aware that anyone aged over 65 or suffer from an illness such as asthma, diabetes, coronary heart disease or Carers of vulnerable people, pregnant ladies and eligible children are able to have a free vaccination against the Flu virus. Please telephone reception on 01305 848333 to check that you are eligible and to arrange an appointment.

At the surgery patient records are held on our computer system, meaning that all of the team are able to see your record and provide the best care for you without you having to repeat your story. Many people assume that if they attend hospital or access out of hours care, staff will also be able to see the patient record, but this is not the case.

For us to be able to work more closely with other healthcare providers in delivering co-ordinated care to you, Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group is encouraging all GP practices to move to a single clinical system, called SystmOne. For us, this means we will need to change our system in September 2017.

To reduce the amount of work during the change- over period, we ask that if you need to order medication from the dispensary between 8th and 30th September 2017, please order before 8th September. This will give us time to enter stock on the new system, without having to manage repeat prescribing.

If you order medication on line, we will have to issue you with a new password, although we won’t need to see your identification if you have already shown this to us. Please contact us after 30th September if this applies to you.

Please be patient during the time of transition; we need to become familiar with the system so that we can care for you in the future. Also, please be assured that your information will remain confidential and is not at risk.
