Karl Drais born 29.4.1785 in Karlsruhe, died 10.12.1851 in Karlsruhe. Short Biography Karl Drais, baptised as Karl Friedrich Christian Ludwig, Freiherr (= baron) Drais von Sauerbronn first was a forest officer employed by the grand duchy of Baden. Later he became off duty whilst retaining his salary and did start a carer as an inventor. Next to others, he did invent a device to record piano music on paper, then a stenograph using 16 characters, two four-wheeled human powered vehicles and on top of all, the two-wheeled velocipede, also called Draisine or hobby- horse, which he presented first time on June 12th 1817 in Mannheim. This was the first vehicle requiring to keep balance whilst using it as a key principle. It was equipped decades later by Pierre Michaux with pedals to become the modern bicycle and further down the road, the automobile invented by Carl Benz. For his inventions, Grand Duke Carl awarded Drais a pension and appointed him as a professor for mechanic science. His experiments with small rail-road bound vehicles did contribute to the railroad handcar, having even today the German name Draisine. Drais was a fervent democrat, supported the wave of revolutions that swept Europe in 1848, dropping his title and the aristocratic "von" from his name in 1849. After the revolution in Baden had collapsed, Drais became mobbed and ruined by royalists. After his death, Drais's enemies systematically repudiate his invention of horseless moving on two wheels. FOREWORD Dear Cyclists, Discovering Europe on a bicycle – the Rhine Cycle Route makes it possible. It runs from the Alps to a North Sea beach and on its way links Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. This guide will point the way. Within the framework of the EU-funded “Demarrage” project, the Rhine Cycle Route has been trans- formed into a top tourism product. For the first time, the whole course has been signposted from the source to the mouth. Simply follow the EuroVelo15 symbol. The Rhine Cycle Route is also the first long distance cycle path to be certified in accordance with a new European standard. Testers belonging to the German ADFC cyclists organisation and the European Cyclists Federation have examined the whole course and evaluated it in accordance with a variety of criteria. This guide is another result of the European cooperation along the Rhine Cycle Route. We have broken up the 1233-kilometre course up into 13 sections and put together cycle-friendly accom- modation, bike stations, tourist information and sightseeing attractions – the basic package for an unforgettable cycle touring holiday.

  • How the Museum Saw the Motorcar?
How the Motor Museum Saw the Automobile: Curating the Automobile as Commodity, as Design and as Social History in Germany and Austria in the 20th Century from National Identity to Mobility. Thesis - submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Pál Négyesi School of Museum Studies University of Leicester October 2018 1 Abstract How the motor museum saw the automobile: Curating the automobile as commodity, as design and as social history in Germany and Austria in the 20th century – from national identity to mobility. The automobile has defined the 20th century. It has brought along radical changes in mobility, altered the landscape, transformed communities and everyday life. Although this complex object has been shown in museums for over a century, an in-depth academic study which looks at the different institutions and changing curatorial practices around the automobile has been lacking. This thesis charts the evolution of the motor museum in Germany and Austria. Here the motor museum is being defined as a museum where automobiles are displayed. It includes science, technical, industrial museums, local history museums and company museums. This thesis draws upon the work of Lubar (Lubar&Kingery,1993) and Divall (Divall&Scott,2001) in order to conceptualise the car as a museum object and as an object of material culture. With the help of fifteen case studies it analyses the different type of museums, their development, their curatorial practices and their permanent and temporary exhibitions, in order to understand the different roles the automobile has played (and is playing) in these institutions.

Female Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Germany David B. Audretsch1, Erik E. Lehmann2 and Katharine Wirsching3 Abstract The recent waves of immigration in western countries lead to challenges for policy makers and the society. In particular the integration of immigrants into the society and the labor market is intensively discussed. Within this process, self-employment and entrepreneurship plays an important role, and in particular new venture creation by women. This chapter aims to provide a snapshot on female entrepreneurship in Germany, with a focus on female immigrant entrepreneurship. We analyze female immigrant entrepreneurship against its historical background as well as in the light of the recent ‘European refugee crisis’. In this chapter we analyze differences between opportunity-driven and necessity-driven female immigrant entrepreneurship and how these differences matters for policy makers. We identify barriers based on personal characteristics, attitudes, cultural background and the entrepreneurial environment hindering latent and nascent female entrepreneurs to start new ventures and thus make a successful process of integration difficult. Despite the emergence of female immigrant entrepreneurship as an academic topic, there exists only scarce and almost anecdotal evidence for Germany. Thus, this chapter aims to present some facts and figures to shed some light on the current situation and development potential to stimulate further research on this topic. Key words: female entrepreneurship, immigrant entrepreneurship JEL: J15, J61, L26 A revised version of this paper is published as ‘Audretsch, D., Lehmann, E.E. & Wirsching, K., Female Immigrant Entrepreneurship, in Link, A.
