    ALTERNATE HISTORY – ALTERNATE MEMORY: COUNTERFACTUAL LITERATURE IN THE CONTEXT OF GERMAN NORMALIZATION by GUIDO SCHENKEL M.A., Freie Universität Berlin, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (German Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2012 © Guido Schenkel, 2012 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines a variety of Alternate Histories of the Third Reich from the perspective of memory theory. The term ‘Alternate History’ describes a genre of literature that presents fictional accounts of historical developments which deviate from the known course of hi story. These allohistorical narratives are inherently presentist, meaning that their central question of “What If?” can harness the repertoire of collective memory in order to act as both a reflection of and a commentary on contemporary social and political conditions. Moreover, Alternate Histories can act as a form of counter-memory insofar as the counterfactual mode can be used to highlight marginalized historical events. This study investigates a specific manifestation of this process. Contrasted with American and British examples, the primary focus is the analysis of the discursive functions of German-language counterfactual literature in the context of German normalization. The category of normalization connects a variety of commemorative trends in postwar Germany aimed at overcoming the legacy of National Socialism and re-formulating a positive German national identity. The central hypothesis is that Alternate Histories can perform a unique task in this particular discursive setting. In the context of German normalization, counterfactual stories of the history of the Third Reich are capable of functioning as alternate memories, meaning that they effectively replace the memory of real events with fantasies that are better suited to serve as exculpatory narratives for the German collective.

    Karl Drais born 29.4.1785 in Karlsruhe, died 10.12.1851 in Karlsruhe. Short Biography Karl Drais, baptised as Karl Friedrich Christian Ludwig, Freiherr (= baron) Drais von Sauerbronn first was a forest officer employed by the grand duchy of Baden. Later he became off duty whilst retaining his salary and did start a carer as an inventor. Next to others, he did invent a device to record piano music on paper, then a stenograph using 16 characters, two four-wheeled human powered vehicles and on top of all, the two-wheeled velocipede, also called Draisine or hobby- horse, which he presented first time on June 12th 1817 in Mannheim. This was the first vehicle requiring to keep balance whilst using it as a key principle. It was equipped decades later by Pierre Michaux with pedals to become the modern bicycle and further down the road, the automobile invented by Carl Benz. For his inventions, Grand Duke Carl awarded Drais a pension and appointed him as a professor for mechanic science. His experiments with small rail-road bound vehicles did contribute to the railroad handcar, having even today the German name Draisine. Drais was a fervent democrat, supported the wave of revolutions that swept Europe in 1848, dropping his title and the aristocratic "von" from his name in 1849. After the revolution in Baden had collapsed, Drais became mobbed and ruined by royalists. After his death, Drais's enemies systematically repudiate his invention of horseless moving on two wheels. It has been demonstrated, such as the textile machinery, the textile manufacturing and other industries like the automotive have shaped the face of our city. An interesting comparison with Manchester was also done. Norbert showed us in his presentation that our city is getting more and more an artistic face. The Robert- Schumann – Symphony – Orchestra has been developed into an important flagship for Chemnitz during last years. A lot of famous operas were staged on our opera house. First of all, I would say that the State Art Collection marks the face of our city more and more. This developed into an important cultural centre of our city in the last years under the direction of Mrs. Mössinger. The Art Collections hold more than 170,000 works of art distributed over four associated museums, the King Albert Museum on the Theatre Square, the Gunzenhauser Museum, the Schlossbergmuseum and the Henry van der Velde Museum. What can you see there? At first, I will speak about the King Albert Museum, where the most famous paintings are exhibited. The Chemnitz Art Gallery with it‟s about 70. 000 objects, dating from the 16th to the 21st century is located on the King Albert Museum. This Museum was built in 1909 at the Theatre Square and was designed by Richard Möbius. Since the restoration in 1993 it is one of the most modern museums in Saxony.
