In this new book by bestselling author Aidan Dobson, the or so big cruisers that were built for the world's navies from are described and analyzed in detail. Described by some as battlecruisers, but never classified as capital ships, they were variously described as "super cruisers", "large cruisers" or even "unrestricted cruisers". The Pennsylvania rated at guns, enormously expensive to build and maintain for a country with a heavy national debt, made only one voyage from its shipyard in Philadelphia to its final berth in Norfolk, Virginia. Specifically, they were designed with a reduced draught, which might be important in the shallow Baltic. Prior to the battle, the Australian battlecruiser Australia had unsuccessfully searched for the German ships in the Pacific. A gunboat was a shallow-draft coastal vessel typically feet in length, and armed with a single cannon mounted in the bow or amidships. Designed by Robert Fulton, stoutly constructed and heavily armed, with a single paddle wheel mounted in the middle between two catamaran-like hulls, the Demologos steamed slowly and could not steer. Before the Battlecruiser : The Big Cruiser in the Worlds Navies 1865-1910 Reviews In spite of the fact that after World War II, most navies abandoned the battleship and battlecruiser concepts, Joseph Stalin 's fondness for big-gun- armed warships caused the Soviet Union to plan a large cruiser class in the late s. Navy Columbia (SSBN-826) Class Ballistic Missile Submarine Program: Background and Issues for Congress Updated September 14, 2021 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R41129 Navy Columbia (SSBN-826) Class Ballistic Missile Submarine Program Summary The Navy’s Columbia (SSBN-826) class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) program is a program to design and build a class of 12 new SSBNs to replace the Navy’s current force of 14 aging Ohio-class SSBNs. Since 2013, the Navy has consistently identified the Columbia-class program as the Navy’s top priority program. The Navy procured the first Columbia-class boat in FY2021 and wants to procure the second boat in the class in FY2024. The Navy’s proposed FY2022 budget requests $3,003.0 (i.e., $3.0 billion) in procurement funding for the first Columbia-class boat and $1,644.0 million (i.e., about $1.6 billion) in advance procurement (AP) funding for the second boat, for a combined FY2022 procurement and AP funding request of $4,647.0 million (i.e., about $4.6 billion). The Navy’s FY2022 budget submission estimates the procurement cost of the first Columbia- class boat at $15,030.5 million (i.e., about $15.0 billion) in then-year dollars, including $6,557.6 million (i.e., about $6.60 billion) in costs for plans, meaning (essentially) the detail design/nonrecurring engineering (DD/NRE) costs for the Columbia class. (It is a long-standing Navy budgetary practice to incorporate the DD/NRE costs for a new class of ship into the total procurement cost of the first ship in the class.) Excluding costs for plans, the estimated hands-on construction cost of the first ship is $8,473.0 million (i.e., about $8.5 billion).

  • The Effectiveness of Canada's Navy on Escort Duty
Munich Personal RePEc Archive The Effectiveness of Canada’s Navy on Escort Duty Skogstad, Karl Lakehead University 16 January 2015 Online at https://mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/61467/ MPRA Paper No. 61467, posted 20 Jan 2015 09:32 UTC The Effectiveness of Canada’s Navy on Escort Duty Karl Skogstad1 January 2015 Abstract This paper examines the potential costs a country faces when it fails to develop domestic arms manufacturing. I examine these costs using the historical example of Canada’s decision to not develop domestic naval shipbuilding capacity prior to World War II. Canada’s primary naval responsibility during the war was to escort convoys be- tween the United Kingdom and North America. However its lack of advanced domestic shipbuilding capacity and congestion at Allied shipyards, meant that Canada could not obtain the relatively advanced destroyer class vessels necessary for convoy duty. Instead it had to rely on less advanced corvette class vessels, which were simple enough to be manufactured domestically. Using a unique data set, created for this project, I match convoy movements to German U-boat locations in order to examine the escort compo- sition and the number of merchant ships lost when an engagement occurred. Using this data I find that destroyers were 2.14 more effective than corvettes at preventing the loss of a merchant ship. Then, by constructing a counterfactual scenario, I find that developing a domestic ship building industry in Canada would have netted the Allies a benefit of 28.7 million 1940 Canadian dollars. BAKER III INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY RICE UNIVERSITY Prepared in conjunction with an energy study sponsored by The Center For International Political Economy and The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy Rice University – May 2000 In Harm’s Way? Chinese Power Projection in Historical Perspective Introduction China is clearly a major power, and has had a long series of years of significant economic growth, and while China's economy may slow its growth, there is every reason to believe that China will continue to enhance its position in Asia and throughout the world. Should this be a cause for concern? Should we view China at the turn of the 21st century as comparable to Germany at the turn of the 20th century – i.e., as a state growing more powerful that will seek to use its industrial might to build a significant ability to project power, and engage in conflictual behavior as part of a drive to achieve dominance? Or will China enhance its position, particularly in Asia, by becoming a source of stability in the region? There are a variety of ways to examine this question. I choose to cast my gaze back in time and study the historical record.

  • Round I: 1898 - the First Naval Law
Chapter 1 Round I: 1898 - The First Naval Law General Briefing for round I The state of the nations After a series of diplomatic encounters and small wars orchestrated by Bismarck, Germany beat France in a decisive war in 1871, and exacted reparations; in that year, Germany became asingle, federal nation under a constitution written by Bismarck. There are three separate branches of government. The Presidency is held by the German Emperor (a job reserved for the King of Prussia). The Emperor has personal control of the armed forces. The Chancellor hasresponsibility for foreign policy, and appoints ministers with the Emperor’s consent. The Bundesrat represents the German princes. The Reichstag is elected. The Emperor can appoint or dismiss a chancellor; the Reichstag must approve, but cannot initiate legislation, nor can it appointordismiss ministers; the Emperor (with the approval of the Bundesrat) can dissolve theReichstag. The Reichstag approves the budget. In 1890, Wilhelm II — a great believer in personal rule by the Emperor, described as “not quite sane” by some observers and “like a balloon. If you do not hold fast to the string, you never know where he will be off to” by Bismarck — dismissed Bismarck (who also believed in personal rule, but by himself) as Chancellor and replaced him with a more malleable candidate. By the time of our game, Germany is growing very fast (see the graphs, which encapsulate the only figures I have). There are two popular visions of how Germany can grow further: either it must expand overseas by establishing colonies, which will provide raw material for German industry, or it must use its wealth to improve social conditions at home.
