As a result, modern comparisons have been relied upon to fill in the gaps about the hoplite’s transition from his military service back into his domestic environment. This has formed the basis of a particular strand of research exploring modern PTSD as a method with which to understand the ancient hoplite’s experiences of war and its aftermath. This debate lacks the necessary historical due diligence because it has not yet been established exactly how a hoplite returned home and how this return was experienced. To rectify this gap in our knowledge, this thesis identifies and examines three fundamental transitions undergone by the classical Athenian hoplite as a result of his military service: his departure to war, his homecoming from war having survived, and his homecoming from war having died. Each of these transitions is split in two, examining both the transition within the domestic environment as a member of an oikos, and within the military environment as a member of the army. Drawing upon a wide range of evidence, this thesis presents a template of each transition, exploring the logistics and rituals involved, the participants, and the locations. The primary aim of this research is to show that the Athenian hoplite underwent a series of transitions into and out of the Athenian army, which suggests a complex relationship between the hoplite, his oikos and his military service. Having established these transitions, this thesis argues that there is evidence of ideological friction between the oikos and the military ideology that is commonly described in the contemporary literature. THE NEW PANATHENAIC VICTOR LISTS FINDSPOT, DESCRIPTION, AND TEXT The present inscription (pp. 188-189) listing athletic victors in the Panathenaia first came to my attention a number of years ago by word of mouth.1 I do not have accurate information about its initial discovery. The stone was initially under the jurisdiction of Dr. George Dontas, who helped me gain accessto it and determinethat no one was working on it. My own interest in the inscriptionin the first place stemmedfrom the hand. With the assistance of the Greek authorities, especially the two (former) directorsof the Akropolis, G. Dontas and E. Touloupa, whose generous cooperationI gratefully acknowledge,I have been granted permission to publish this important inscription.2In October of 1989 I was able to study the text in situ and also to make a squeeze and photographs.3 I In a joint article it is particularly important to indicate who did what.     THE CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF GREEK AND ROMAN WARFARE Warfare was the single biggest preoccupation of historians in antiquity.     Chapter 1 Sovereignty and Divinity in Classical Greek Thought In the study of classical Greek religion and its relationship to Greek society, there is no equivalent to Henri Frankfort’s Kingship and the Gods: A Study of Ancient Near Eastern Religion as the Integration of Society and Nature (1948).1 The reason is not far to seek. By contrast to their neighbors in the Near East, Greeks of the classical era generally shunned the institution of kingship, and organized themselves according to various forms of collective government. The theme of kingship, therefore, has not seemed particularly appropriate for any study devoted to Greece of the classical era. Yet the imagery and the ideology of kingship were never far from the awareness of Greeks of the sixth, fifth, and fourth centuries b.c.e., particularly when they were assembled in political and religious gatherings. For the gods they honored on those oc- casions were conceived of as a community under the order of the divine king- ship of Zeus, under whom, by extension, all mortal communities were also ordered. It stands to reason, therefore, that the ideological implications of kingship did have a bearing on classical Greek society, although the man- ner in which they may have done so is not immediately obvious. Kingship and the gods has been a subject of study in Greek history for those looking outside the classical period, to the Mycenaean Bronze Age or to the era of Hellenistic monarchies.2 In both of these chronological direc- tions, scholars have looked to the institutions of kingship and religion in the 1.

As a result, modern comparisons have been relied upon to fill in the gaps about the hoplite’s transition from his military service back into his domestic environment. This has formed the basis of a particular strand of research exploring modern PTSD as a method with which to understand the ancient hoplite’s experiences of war and its aftermath. This debate lacks the necessary historical due diligence because it has not yet been established exactly how a hoplite returned home and how this return was experienced. To rectify this gap in our knowledge, this thesis identifies and examines three fundamental transitions undergone by the classical Athenian hoplite as a result of his military service: his departure to war, his homecoming from war having survived, and his homecoming from war having died.
