Some Interesting International News for the Parishioners of OLVC Easter Edition April 15, 2012 Part II [21 March 2012 -- OPEN REPLY TO OPEN LETTER OF MGR. NICOLA BUX by H.E. Bishop Williamson]

Monseigneur, In an Open Le er of March 19, addressed to Bishop Fellay and to all priests of the SSPX, you appealed to us to accept the sincere and warm-hearted off er of reconcilia on that Benedict XVI is making to the SSPX for the healing of the long-standing ri between Rome and the SSPX. Let one of the SSPX bishops take upon himself to give you what he thinks might have been the answer of that “great churchman”, Archbishop Lefebvre. Your le er begins with an appeal for “every sacrifi ce in the name of unity”. But there can be no true Catholic unity that is not grounded in the true Catholic Faith. The great Archbishop made every sacrifi ce for unity in the true doctrine of the Faith. Alas, the Doctrinal Discussions of 2009-2011 proved that the doctrinal ri between the Rome of Va can II and the SSPX is as wide as ever. But Faith sacrifi ced for unity would be a faithless unity. Of course the Church is an ins tu on both divine and human. Of course the divine element cannot fail, so of course the Church cannot ul mately fail, and the sun will rise again. But one may beg to diff er when you say that the dawn is close at hand, because that true Faith which the SSPX upheld in the Discussions is not shining out from the Rome of Va can II, where accordingly the SSPX could not be in safety. Nor could it bring light if itself it adopted the Conciliar darkness. The sincerity of the Pope’s wish to welcome back the SSPX into “full ecclesial communion”, as shown in a series of gestures of real good will, is not in doubt, but “ a common profession of faith” between the SSPX and believers in Va can II is not possible, unless the SSPX were to desert that Faith which it defended in the Discussions. And when the SSPX cries “God forbid!” to such a deser on, far from its voice being s fl ed, it is heard all over the world. Certainly, “this is the appropriate moment”, certainly “the favourable me is come” for that solu on to the agonizing problems of Church and world which the heavenly Mother has long been calling for, and which depends upon the Holy Father alone. This clear solu on has long been known. How could Heaven possibly have le the world in such distress as that of the last 100 years without providing a solu on like that provided by the prophet Elias for the leprosy of the Syrian General Namaan? Humanly speaking, the solu on - 1 - seemed ridiculous, but nobody could say that it was not possible. It required merely some faith and humility. The pagan General gathered together enough faith and trust in the man of God to do what Heaven asked for, and of course he was cured instantaneously. Let the Holy Father but gather together enough faith and trust in the promise of the Heavenly Mother! Let him but seize this “appropriate moment” before u er madmen succeed in launching the Third World War in the Middle East! Let him, we beg of him, we entreat him, save Church and world by merely doing what the Heavenly Mother asked for. It is not impossible. She would overcome all obstacles in his way. Certainly he alone can now save us from unimaginable and unnecessary suff ering. And if he wishes for any support in prayer or ac on with which the humble SSPX could help him to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart in union with all the bishops of the world, whom the Heavenly Mother would rally, he knows that he could count fi rst and foremost on the support of Bishop Fellay and the other three bishops of the SSPX, least among whom is

Your devoted servant in Christ, +Richard Williamson

[20 more subde5acons!] The seminaries of the Society of St. Pius X annually host ordina on ceremonies on the Saturday of the fourth week of Lent – a day prior to Passion Sunday – typically called Si entes Saturday (a er the fi rst words of the Mass’ Introit). The ordina on ceremonies held on that day are of the fi nal minor holy orders, Exorcist and Acolyte, and the fi rst of the major orders, Subdeacon.

- 3 - Si entes Saturday fell on March 24th this year, and we have two brief reports to give from the SSPX’s seminaries in the United States and Switzerland. At St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary at Winona, Minnesota, 7 seminarians were ordained as Exorcists and Acolytes, while a grand total of 13 clerics stepped forward to be ordained to the Subdiaconate by Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta. The St. Pius X Seminary in Econe, Switzerland had the joy of seeing 7 Subdeacons ordained for the SSPX (5 French / 2 Italians) and 1 Franciscan by Bishop Bernard Tissier de Mallerais. Please keep these seminarians and subdeacons in your prayers, that with God’s grace, they will persevere and eventually be ordained to the Priesthood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

[SSPX District of Africa : A New Priory in Nigeria] Responding to the appeal of numerous faithful and even priests of Nigeria, the Society of St. Pius X, in its great African adventure, has been visi ng Nigeria since 1992 and will, at last, start a new Priory in Enugu, in the east of the country. The offi cial opening of St. Michael’s Priory will take place on Sunday 26th August in the presence of Fr. Alain-Marc Nély, 2nd General Assitant of the Society. As of now, three priests are preparing themselves for this new apostolate : Fr. Gregory Obih, who is already there, Fr. Arnold Trauner and Fr. Nicolas Bély (future prior), who have travelled several mes to Nigeria from South Africa. Some retreats have been preached, Holy Mass is celebrated, not only in Enugu, but also in Owerri, Aba, Asaba, Otukpo, Lagos and even Accra in Ghana, and Cotonou in Benin.

[Dr. Ligaya Acosta, a guest speaker at the Walk for Life in the of San Pablo] Dr. Ligaya Acosta, Human Life Interna onal (HLI) regional coordinator for Asia and Oceania, was a guest speaker at the Walk held in the Diocese of San Pablo in the province of Laguna, two hours outside of Manila. “I think this event gives a strong signal to our president and legislators that the overwhelming majority of Filipinos will not allow them to pass the RH Bill, which threatens life and family, and that we will never stop fi gh ng to protect the right to life given to us by the Lord, even if it means giving up our own lives for the cause,” said Dr. Acosta. “The Culture of Death is alien to the Filipino way of life, and we will not allow it to destroy our children and our future. The Philippines is very strongly pro-God, pro-life and pro-family.” - 4 - “As I have said many mes in my speeches, there is a poverty worse than material poverty, and this is moral and spiritual poverty, which is what the Reproduc ve Health Bill brings,” Dr. Acosta said. Pro-life Filipinos hope that the simultaneous rallies will help pressure legislators to table the bill in both houses of congress. Congress went into recess last week, again pushing off a vote on the RH Bill. The congressional session will resume on May 7. “2013 is elec on year for the Philippines, and hopefully these rallies will give another strong signal to our elected offi cials that this me Filipinos know be er, and will never again vote for those suppor ng the RH Bill and similar bills,” Dr. Acosta said. “Even with our victory last week, we will con nue with massive public educa onal and ac vist eff orts as we brace ourselves for another more challenging ba le when congress re-opens May 7.”

[Italy: "Mosques Springing Up like Mushrooms" by Soeren Kern] h p://www.gatestoneins tute.org/2984/italy-mosques Donors are using alterna ve channels to ensure that their dona ons escape the control of the regular fi nancial system. More than 250 mosques across Italy have reached an agreement to create a new umbrella organiza on, the Italian Islamic Confedera on (CII). The CII will be controlled by Morocco, and will compete with an exis ng Muslim umbrella organiza on, the Union of Islamic Communi es and Organiza ons in Italy (UCOII). The UCOII, which is es mated to control 60% of the mosques in Italy, is closely ed to the Muslim Brotherhood. Since its founding in 1990, the UCOII has used its virtual monopoly over the mosques in Italy to spread its Islamist ideology over the 1.5 million Muslims in the country. The UCOII has also worked to become the main interlocutor between the Muslim community and the Italian state. But the Italian government has ruled out reaching an agreement with the UCOII because of its links to the Muslim Brotherhood. "There can be no accords with those like the UCOII, who de facto deny the existence of the state of Israel and hold ambiguous posi ons on terrorism at the na onal and local level," according to Andrea Ronchi, Italy's former Minister for Community Policy. A er it came to light that the majority of the mosques in Italy are controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni called for a moratorium on the building of new mosques un l a new na onal law could be wri en to regulate the phenomenon. - 5 - According to Manes Bernardini, a poli cian with the Northern League in Bologna, "Mosques are springing up like mushrooms, and mayors can do nothing about it because there is no na onal law to regulate the prolifera on of these structures." In this context, the crea on of the CII on March 22 is an a empt by the Moroccan government to establish a new Muslim umbrella organiza on that would represent a more "moderate" face of Islam vis-à-vis the Italian government. CII's founding document states that it "respects the holiness of life" and "rejects every form of violence." The document also says the CII "respects the principles of modera on, tolerance and respect towards others," and will "promote and defend the rights of Muslim women in Italy." The primary mo ve behind the crea on of the CII, which is being run by a Moroccan named Fihri Wahid, appears to be an eff ort to persuade the Italian government to approve and subsidize the construc on of more mosques in the country. CII's founding document states: "Crea ng the best condi ons in order to guarantee dignity and freedom of worship, underlining the importance that places of worship refl ect the crea ve genius and the splendor of Italian culture towards the prospect of integra on and dialogue with the other religions present in the country." According to Hassan Abouyoub, the Moroccan Ambassador to Italy, the establishment of the CII is "an historic achievement. It will fi nally allow the Muslim popula on in Italy to have a new voice." Abouyoub added: "The mosques which are taking part in this new confedera on are only of the Maliki tradi on, which respect a moderate Islam." The Maliki tradi on refers to a school of Islamic Sharia law that is prac ced in Morocco and other parts of North Africa. In fact, the "moderate" Maliki school of Islam is the offi cial state religion in Morocco, where Chris ans are frequently harassed and o en expelled from the country without due process, allegedly for prosely zing. With the crea on of the CII, Morocco is a emp ng to export to Italy a religious control strategy that is working very well in neighboring Spain, where the Moroccan government has been using an umbrella organiza on called the Spanish Federa on of Islamic Religious En es (FEERI), to exert control over the religious and cultural beliefs and prac ces of the nearly one million Moroccan immigrants who reside in Spain. According to a leaked secret report prepared by Spain's Na onal Intelligence Center (CNI), excerpts of which have been published by the Madrid-based El País newspaper, the Moroccan government is aggressively implemen ng "a strategy of great magnitude" that involves establishing a parallel Muslim society in Spain - 6 - by discouraging Moroccans from integra ng into their host country, and by encouraging them instead to live an Islamic lifestyle isolated from Spanish society. The document also states that Rabat is fi nancing the construc on of hundreds of mosques in Spain whose imams are directly appointed by the Moroccan government. Moreover, the North African country is a emp ng to impose Muslim religious instruc on in Spanish public schools, and is pressuring Moroccan families to remove their children from those schools that fail to comply. A separate CNI report about fi nancing Jihad in Spain provides other examples of how the Moroccan government is using Islam for poli cal ends. For example, in November 2008, "the Moroccan Minister of Islamic Aff airs organized and paid for a mee ng in Marrakesh which was a ended by a considerable number of imams and leaders of the Islamic communi es in Spain," according to the CNI. At that mee ng, the Moroccan government promised "fi nancing for all religious associa ons and mosques that are prepared to submit to the control of the [Moroccan] regime and to adhere to its instruc ons." The keynote speaker at the mee ng was Mohamed Yassine Mansouri, head of the Moroccan Secret Service (DGED). The CNI report also states: "The fi nancing is having nega ve consequences for [mul cultural] coexistence in Spain, such as the emergence of parallel socie es and ghe os, Islamic courts and police that operate outside of Spanish jurisprudence, removing girls from schools, forced marriages, etc." It con nues: "There is insuffi cient control of fi nancial fl ows involving grants and aid from other countries that are being funneled to the Islamic community in Spain. For the most part donors are using alterna ve channels to ensure that their dona ons escape the control of the regular Spanish fi nancial system. Donors should be made fully aware of the risks associated with such fi nancing." Morocco also co-sponsored a weeklong seminar in Barcelona en tled "Muslims and European Values," during which it was proposed that the construc on of big mosques would be "a useful formula" to fi ght Islamic fundamentalism in Spain. A keynote speaker at the event, a Barcelona-based Moroccan imam named Noureddine Ziani, said it is absolutely necessary to accept Islamic values as European values and that from now on, Europeans should replace the term "Judeo-Chris an" with term "Islamo-Chris an" when describing Western Civiliza on. Back in Italy, there are now an es mated 500 mosques in the country, in addi on to thousands of informal Islamic prayer centers and Koranic schools, most of which are housed in basements, garages and warehouses. Many of the mosque projects in Italy are being promoted by le wing poli cians, who are waging an ideological war with the Roman . As in many - 7 - other European countries, mul culturalists in Italy hope that by promo ng Islam, they will eventually succeed in destroying the country's Judeo-Chris an heritage. Now, with the crea on of the CII, Italy may be one step closer to hos ng yet another mosque, this me in the northern Italian city of Bologna. Not coincidentally, Fihri Wahid, the new president of the CII, comes from the Moroccan community in Bologna, where the mayor postponed the construc on of a mega-mosque (described as a "massive 6,000 square meter mosque inside a 52,000 square meter Islamic citadel" a er it emerged that it was being fi nanced by the UCOII. Evidently, the Moroccans are hoping they can get permission to build the mega- mosque if it is sponsored by the new, more "moderate" CII. [UK: The Catholic Church against gay marriage] Cardinal Keith Michael Patrick O’Brien, Archbishop of St. Andrew and Edinburgh and President of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, denounced the project of the Bri sh government to legalize gay marriage. In the Sunday Telegraph dated March 4, 2012, Cardinal believes that “no government has the moral authority to dismantle the universally understood defi ni on of marriage.” The idea of Prime - 8 - Minister David Cameron to open marriage to same-sex couples “does not respect the right of children to have a father and a mother.” He went so far as to draw an astonishing consequence of the eventual result of such a project by pushing it to the absurd: “If marriage refl ects just the love between adults, what would prevent the marriage of three people who love each other?” (Sources: Apic / Sunday Telegraph – DICI No. 252 of 30/03/12)

[Europe: The Progressivist Schism Grows Less and Less Latent] On March 23, 2012, the Swiss newspaper Le Temps published a study penned by journalist Patricia Briel on the demands of Catholic progressivists. A er Austria, Germany, Ireland and Great Britain, the “progressivist revolt” has won over Belgium, she points out, recalling that last fall, a priest from Courtrai launched a manifesto en tled “Believers Speak Out”, that ques oned why laymen couldn’t preach to make up for the lack of priests. The text also demanded that women and married men be admi ed to the priesthood. It gathered almost 8,000 signatures of support, and its complaints have been heard by the Belgian bishops, who received representa ves of the pe oners in early February 2012. For a year now, priests and theologians from several countries of Europe, the United States, Brazil and Australia have been mul plying appeals for the admission of women and married men to the priesthood, and for remarried divorcees to be allowed to communicate. The Catholic basis also made known its demands, for example in the manifesto Kirche 2011, published in the Bavarian newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and ini ally signed by 150 German-speaking theologians, who have since been joined by many laymen. Realizing that there is “an unprecedented crisis” in the German Catholic Church, the signatories invite the universal Church to leave behind “certain sclero c structures in order to win back its credibility and a new vitality.” Besides a par cipa on of the faithful in the nomina on of bishops and priests, a greater openness towards homosexual couples and an end to the Church’s “rigorist and pi less” morality, the demands are the same as those expressed in Belgium. Today, this text has gained the support of 315 persons in France, Spain, Canada, Brazil, the USA and Switzerland. In the columns of Le Temps, one of these persons, Michael Felder, professor at the University of Fribourg, denies any accusa on of a will to “protestan ze” the Church. He deplores above all the bishops’ lack of power. “There reigns at present within the Church a climate of mistrust. We must come back to a culture of dialogue,” he points out. – In late September 2011, it was the Community of Catholic Women of Germany (KFD) that launched a pe on in favor of remarried divorcees being allowed to communicate. - 9 - In France, many priests and laymen think that Rome should worry more about the “silent progressivist schism” that is “shaking” Europe, than about ge ng closer with the Society of St. Pius X. The Church is “too cau ous” to undertake any reforms, was the judgment of 170 offi cials, clerics and laymen, who signed an Open Le er to the Chris ans of the Diocese of Rouen. This le er was a call to disobedience, like the one wri en in June 2011, by about 300 Austrian priests. Indeed, in a Pfaff er-Ini a ve (Priests’ Ini a ve), these la er made it known that they would no longer follow Rome’s direc ves concerning the communion of remarried divorcees and that they would henceforth support the ordina on of women and of married men. According to a survey, 30% of the country’s Austrian priests agree with this text. Which is why the Austrian bishops were called to Rome on January 23. In Australia and Ireland, the ordina on of women and the marriage of priests have also become a theme for demands. Le Temps quotes a survey published on February 29 on the Associa on of Catholic Priests website, according to which 61% of the ecclesias cs ques oned believe that the Catholic hierarchy does not understand the work and the challenges that priests have to face these days. 67% think that the bishops are too submissive towards Rome. 78% claim to be for the marriage of priests and 60% for the ordina on of women. According to the Swiss Jesuit Jean-Blaise Fellay, we are witnessing a sort of “Catholic Spring”, rising from below, because of the bishops’ loss of authority in the Church and in society. When ques oned by Patricia Briel, he said he considers the bishops to be “high offi cials and ecclesias cal managers.” And he denounces the failure of Va can Council II, one of whose goals was, according to him, to restore the bishops’ role. “The synods have turned into suff oca on chambers rather than places of crea vity. The public interest in the synods has dropped because nothing or so li le comes of them. Anything new or salient has been erased, fl a ened in the fi nal texts,” he explains. For Fr. Jean-Blaise Fellay, today’s ecclesias cal system is closer to the royal absolu sm of the 18th century than to the 20th century liberal society. A context favorable to the impulses that come from below, since the laymen are now the only ones able to expose requests and demands. He concludes: ‘the present problems call for a far more radical return to evangelical sources and not simply an ecclesias cal mending. I am not sure that, in this context, the ordina on of married men and women would be the full solu on.” – No comment. (sources: Le Temps/apic – DICI#252, March 30, 2012)

[The exposi on “Lux in Arcana” unveils some of the secret Va can Archives] To mark the 400th anniversary of the founda on of the secret Archives of the Va can, a unique exposi on en tled Lux in Arcana (a light on the secrets) opened its doors on February 29 at the Capitol Museum in Rome. It allows the visitor to discover for the fi rst me around a hundred excep onal ar cles—parchments, registers, manuscripts and codices—that will be on display un l September 9, 2012. From the eighth century, in the case of the most ancient item, from China and the Incan Empire, in the case of the most distant countries, Lux in Arcana retraces, through these archives, not only the history of the papacy, but also the history of Europe and the world. Besides presen ng the documents, the exposi on sets out to show and to explain how the papal archives func on—a library with no less than 85 kilometers of shelving. Explanatory labels in Italian and English help the visitors to understand be er the items on display, to know who composed the document, and thus it becomes evident that some authors are outstanding historical personages. Among the ar facts presented one will be able to admire the Dictatus Papae by Gregory VII,

- 11 - the bull deposing the Emperor Frederick II, the le er from the members of the English Parliament to Pope Clement VII about the request for an of marriage for Henry VIII, the bull excommunica ng Mar n Luther, the lawsuit of Philip the Fair against the Knights Templar, a le er from Bernade e Soubirous to Pius IX…. The documents on display are only a sample of what is contained in the Archives, for it requires great care to transport them: most of them are very fragile and need high climate control standards, and even moving them can aff ect their conserva on.
