In 25 this paper, we conducted a systematic revision of the Troglohyphantes species of the Italian Alps, 26 with a special focus on the Lucifuga complex, including the description of two new species (T. 27 lucifer n. sp. and T. apenninicus n. sp). In addition, we provided new diagnostic drawings of the 28 holotype of T. henroti (Henroti complex) and established three new synonymies within the genus. 29 The molecular analysis of the animal DNA barcode confirms the validity of this method of 30 identification of the Alpine Troglohyphantes and provides additional support for the morphology- 31 based species complexes. Finally, we revised the known distribution range of additional 32 Troglohyphantes species, as well as other poorly known alpine cave-dwelling spiders. -

This work aims to characterize the arthropods and other biota (lichens, bryophytes, vascular plants and birds) associated with the Azorean endemic tree, Juniperus brevifolia. This is the first of a series of publications that will (i) provide a comprehensive list of all the biota associated with the main Azorean endemic trees and shrubs, (ii) describe in detail the diver- sity, abundance and spatial patterns of canopy arthropods, and (iii) whenever possible, to extend biodiversity assessments to communities of bryophytes, lichens, vascular plants and vertebrates. We use standardized sampled data from BALA project for canopy arthropods and for the remaining taxa we surveyed literature data and the Herbarium of University of Azores. Juniperus brevifolia occurs in a wide range of elevation belts in Azores and accommodates a remarkable large number of taxa: besides canopy arthropods (161 species) it is also an important substrate to other vascular species (six species), bryophytes (105 spe- cies), lichens (106 species) and also birds (four species). In addition, the species richness and particularly the abundance of endemics are dominant, and the number of conservation concern species for bryophytes is noteworthy (30 out of 70). -

The Hawaiian happy face spider (Theridion grallator Simon, 1900), named for a remarkable abdominal colour pattern resembling a smiling face, has served as a model organism for under- standing the generation of genetic diversity. Theridion grallator is one of 11 endemic Hawaiian species of the genus reported to date. Asserting the origin of island endemics informs on the evolutionary context of diversification, and how diversity has arisen on the islands. Studies on the genus Theridion in Hawaii, as elsewhere, have long been hampered by its large size (> 600 species) and poor definition. Here we report results of phylogenetic analyses based on DNA sequences of five genes conducted on five diverse species of Hawaiian Theridion, along with the most intensive sampling of Theridiinae analysed to date. Results indicate that the Hawai- ian Islands were colonised by two independent Theridiinae lineages, one of which originated in the Americas. Both lineages have undergone local diversification in the archipelago and have convergently evolved similar bizarre morphs. Our findings confirm para- or polyphyletic status of the largest Theridiinae genera: Theridion, Achaearanea and Chrysso. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of the genus Typhlocharis Dieck, 1869 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Anillini) is described (T. deferreri nov. sp.) from the province of Cadiz in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Its affinities with other species are discussed, mainly those with males having a median tubercle in sternum II: T. bivari Serrano and Aguiar, 2006, T. passosi Serrano and Aguiar, 2005, T. navarica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (outereloi group), T. monastica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 and T. per- egrina Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (monastica group). The value of sexual dimorphism as a phylogenetic and taxonomic tool is revised; seemingly there is no relationship between this kind of sexual dimorphism and the traits that differentiate the established species groups (umbilicate series, type of gonocoxite, dimorphism in tibiae I and II, etc.). The presence and significance of stridulatory organ (pars stridens) is also commented upon, updating and increasing the scarce data available about this structure, poorly considered in the literature, with notes about distribution and relationships of the spe- cies which have it. -

Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics. -

This work provides diagnostic characters for these species and, in particular, for the structure of male genitalia. The affinities with other known species namely their putative closest relatives, as well as ecological and biogeographical comments are also included. A key for the identification of the males of the Geocharis species found north of the Tejo River in Portugal is also provided. New chorologist data on other endogean carabids from Portugal are also included. A Collection of Spiders and Harvestmen from Two Caves in Ontario and Newfoundland, Canada (Araneae, Opiliones)
A collection of spiders and harvestmen from two caves in Ontario and Newfoundland, Canada (Araneae, Opiliones) Wilfried Breuss ABSTRACT Contrib. Nat. Hist. 12: 297–313. In the years 1995 and 2006 the author visited the Bonnechere Caves (Ontario) and the Corner Brook Caves (Newfoundland) and thereby conducted zoological collec- tions. Five species of spiders could be ascertained: Oreophantes recurvatus, Porr- homma convexum (Linyphiidae), Meta ovalis (Tetragnathidae), Rugathodes sex- punctatus (Theridiidae) and Eidmannella pallida (Nesticidae). All of them are widely distributed and concerning their connection to caves they have to be classified as troglophiles or trogloxenes. As expected, no troglobionts were found. P. convexum seems to be especially noteworthy. There are only a few nearctic records of this species, all from the northwestern region (Alaska, Washington, Alberta and Brit- ish Columbia). The present findings from the (most) eastern provinces of Canada emphasize the wide distribution of P. convexum. Harvestmen are represented by only one species, Leiobunum elegans. This phalangiid is widespread and common in the northeast of North America. The interest in biospeleological questions has so far concentrated on the southern regions of the continent (USA, Mexico), whereas Canadian caves have only been given little attention. Some have presented a detailed taxonomic review of the families concerned; some have referred the readers to standard taxonomic works, in view of the breadth and complexity of the subject concerned, and have concentrated on ecological or physiological aspects; others have chosen to review insects of a specific set of habitats.
