The samples were collected bimonthly at 6 sampling plots and the gathered Carabidae were identified and coun - ted. A total of 55 species belonging to 32 genera of 7 subfamilies were identified from 2893 collected ground beetles. The most species rich subfamilies were Harpalinae (35 species, 64%) and Trechinae (14 species, 25.45%), others represented by one or two species. Accord- ing to the total individual numbers, Cicindelinae was the most abundant subfamily compris- ing 38.81% of the whole beetles, followed by 998 Harpalinae (34.49%), and 735 Trechinae (25.4%), respectively. The dominant species was Calomera lunulata (Fabricius, 1781) (1087 individuals, 37.57%) and the subdominant species was Pogonus chalceus viridanus (Dejean, 1828) (576 individuals, 19.91%). ZABALLOS1 & SERGIO PÉREZ-GONZÁLEZ Departamento de Zoología y Antropología Física. Facultad de Biología. Universidad Complutense de Madrid. 28040 Madrid. Spain E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] 1Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of the genus Typhlocharis Dieck, 1869 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Anillini) is described (T. deferreri nov. sp.) from the province of Cadiz in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Its affinities with other species are discussed, mainly those with males having a median tubercle in sternum II: T. bivari Serrano and Aguiar, 2006, T. passosi Serrano and Aguiar, 2005, T. navarica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (outereloi group), T. monastica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 and T. per- egrina Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (monastica group). The value of sexual dimorphism as a phylogenetic and taxonomic tool is revised; seemingly there is no relationship between this kind of sexual dimorphism and the traits that differentiate the established species groups (umbilicate series, type of gonocoxite, dimorphism in tibiae I and II, etc.). The presence and significance of stridulatory organ (pars stridens) is also commented upon, updating and increasing the scarce data available about this structure, poorly considered in the literature, with notes about distribution and relationships of the spe- cies which have it.

M. SERRANO & CARLOS A. S. AGUIAR Centro de Biologia Ambiental/Departamento de Biologia Animal, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, R. Ernesto de Vasconcelos, C2, 1 Piso, 1749-016 Lisboa, Portugal. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two new species of the genus Geocharis Ehlers, 1883 (Carabidae: Trechinae, Anillini) are described (Geocharis barcora- belo n. sp. and Geocharis antheroi n. sp.) from the northern region of Portugal (Iberian Peninsula). This work provides diagnostic characters for these species and, in particular, for the structure of male genitalia. The affinities with other known species namely their putative closest relatives, as well as ecological and biogeographical comments are also included. A key for the identification of the males of the Geocharis species found north of the Tejo River in Portugal is also provided. New chorologist data on other endogean carabids from Portugal are also included. Key words: Coleoptera, Carabidae, Geocharis, new species, North Portugal, Iberian Peninsula Resumo Neste estudo são descritas duas novas espécies pertencentes ao género Geocharis Ehlers, 1883 (Carabidae: Trechinae, An- illini) da região norte de Portugal: Geocharis barcorabelo n. sp. and Geocharis antheroi n. sp. São dados os principais caracteres diagnosticantes nomeadamente os da genitália masculina. As afinidades com as espécies supostamente mais próximas são discutidas, assim como são feitas algumas considerações ecológicas e corológicas.

  • Ultrastructural Analysis of Coarazuphium Formoso (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Zuphiini), a New Brazilian Troglobitic Beetle

CEP 37200-000, Brazil. E-mail: [email protected] 2Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract It is described Coarazuphium formoso sp. n., from male and female specimens collected in Barriguda cave and Calor de Cima cave, both in the municipality of Campo Formoso (Bahia, Brazil). The most striking difference between C. formoso and other species of the genus is the presence of three pairs of setae on the dorsal surface of the head close to the posterior margin, while the other species have only one or two pairs. Species from this genus showed advanced troglobiomorphic characters in comparison to other Brazilian cave beetles. Characters as increased extra-optic sensory structures, and the presence of particular sensilla, and sensory and gustatory receptors were not detected under routine microscopy but re- quired ultrastructural scrutiny. Similar analyses are needed in other epigean Zuphiini species for better interpreting their functional meaning. Key words: Coarazuphium, ground beetle, cave dwelling, sensilla, antenna, eyes, mouthparts, legs Introduction Members from the Zuphiini tribe are normally winged epigean organisms (Casale, 1998).
