E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of the genus Typhlocharis Dieck, 1869 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Anillini) is described (T. deferreri nov. sp.) from the province of Cadiz in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Its affinities with other species are discussed, mainly those with males having a median tubercle in sternum II: T. bivari Serrano and Aguiar, 2006, T. passosi Serrano and Aguiar, 2005, T. navarica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (outereloi group), T. monastica Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 and T. per- egrina Zaballos and Wrase, 1998 (monastica group). The value of sexual dimorphism as a phylogenetic and taxonomic tool is revised; seemingly there is no relationship between this kind of sexual dimorphism and the traits that differentiate the established species groups (umbilicate series, type of gonocoxite, dimorphism in tibiae I and II, etc.). The presence and significance of stridulatory organ (pars stridens) is also commented upon, updating and increasing the scarce data available about this structure, poorly considered in the literature, with notes about distribution and relationships of the spe- cies which have it. -

Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics. -

This work provides diagnostic characters for these species and, in particular, for the structure of male genitalia. The affinities with other known species namely their putative closest relatives, as well as ecological and biogeographical comments are also included. A key for the identification of the males of the Geocharis species found north of the Tejo River in Portugal is also provided. New chorologist data on other endogean carabids from Portugal are also included. DOI: 10.5038/1827-806X.40.1.4 An overview of the obligate hypogean fauna in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira archipelagos) is provided, with a list of obligated cave-dwelling species and subspecies, and a general perspective about its conservation. All the available literature on subterranean Biology of Portugal since the first written record in 1870 until today has been revised. A total of 43 troglobiont and 67 stygobiont species and subspecies from 12 orders have been described so far in these areas, included in the so-called Mediterranean hotspot of biodiversity. The subterranean fauna in Portugal has been considered moderately poor with some endemic relicts and it remains to be demonstrated if this fact is still true after investing in standard surveys in cave environments. The major problems related to the conservation of cave fauna are discussed, but it is clear that the protection of this specialized fauna implies an adequate management of surface habitats. -

Typhlocharina is a diverse lineage of minute endogean Anillini (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechinae) formed by three genera endemic to the Mediterranean region. Four new species of Microcharidius Coiffait, 1969 from Extremadura (Spain) are described in this work, all of them sharing unusual features of the male genitalia: M. andujari sp.n., M. lencinai sp.n., M. serranoi sp.n., and M. aguiari sp.n. Male genitalia are very important in insect systematics, often bearing diagnostic features involved in prezygotic isolation processes. In Anillini, male genitalia comprise the aedeagus (median lobe and parameres) and ring sclerite, and the aedeagus has been used as a major taxonomic tool to discriminate species. Here we provide an in-depth revision of these structures in Typhlocharina bringing a compara- tive approach to evaluate their taxonomic potential. The morphological diversity of male genitalia is described in detail, including poorly studied or overlooked characters like ring sclerites, parameres, endophallic sclerites, and apical laminae of the median lobe. -
