This novel is considered one of the best works of Virginia Woolf as she goes deep into human psychology and English society at the time describing the difficulties one has to go through to survive in this world. This essay focuses on how Woolf´s narrative technique affects our perception of the characters and their thoughts. This essay will try to answer the question, evaluating four of the main causes involved in the maritime dispute. These are the historical, political, social and economic causes. As well, a possible cause - consequence relation with the territorial conflict will be established. 60 MODELING THE EMPTYING PERIOD OF AN OUTFLOW CLEPSYDRA (WAT ER CLOCK) This extended essay studies the emptying of an outfl ow clepsydra, a type of water clocks whose emptying periods (the time it takes the clock to get empty) were taken as a measure of time. In particular, this essay tries to model and evaluate experimentally an equation for estimating the emptying period of a clepsydra with the shape of a truncated cone with an orifi ce on the centre of its base. The author combines a theoretical and an empirical approach to achieve his objective. Página 4 Sumario Mejores monografías de Bachillerato Internacional Or Tj5 78 EULER’S IDENTITY. EXTENDED ESSAY ON MATHEMATICS Complex numbers are those which somehow involve √-1. Those numbers have no value, meaning that they cannot be expressed either as fractions, or as decimals, not even using approximations. This is the reason why the author wondered how they could be useful and how to operate with them. They are broadly used in many different fields of mathematics and even in other areas, especially in those sciences and engineering with a great mathematical base. Chile) case.1 This judgment addresses a number of important issues in relation to the delimitation of maritime bound- aries, including the treatment of existing maritime boundaries, the use of the three-stage methodology and the procedure of the ICJ. This contribution out- lines the background to the dispute and aims to analyse the main issues arising from the judgment. Background to the Dispute The maritime dispute between Peru and Chile can be traced back to the time the countries obtained independence from Spain. However, it was the discov- ery of guano along the coastline of the Atacama Desert and the subsequent inland exploration for nitrate that contributed to the territorial tensions in the region, and which ultimately changed the political map of South America. The War of the Pacific (1879–1883) between Chile and the joint forces of Peru and Bolivia2 resulted in a redrawing of the boundaries, with Peru and Chile emerging as new neighbours.3 The Treaty of Peace and Friendship (‘Treaty of 1 Maritime Dispute (Peru v Chile) Judgment of 27 January 2014, available at: <http://www.icj-cij. org/docket/files/137/17930.pdf > (hereafter Peru/Chile). 2 Bolivia withdrew from the war in November 1879.

On 15 July 2014, Chile raised a preliminary objection to the jurisdiction of the Court. By its Judgment of 24 September 2015, the Court rejected the preliminary objection raised by Chile and found that it had jurisdiction, on the basis of Article XXXI of the Pact of Bogotá, to entertain the Application. Chile) Summary of the Judgment of 27 January 2014 Chronology of the procedure (paras. 1-15) The Court recalls that, on 16 January 2008, the Republic of Peru (hereinafter “Peru”) filed in the Registry of the Court an Application instituting proceedings against the Republic of Chile (hereinafter “Chile”) in respect of a dispute concerning, on the one hand, “the delimitation of the boundary between the maritime zones of the two States in the Pacific Ocean, beginning at a point on the coast called Concordia . the terminal point of the land boundary established pursuant to the Treaty . of 3 June 1929” and, on the other, the recognition in favour of Peru of a “maritime zone lying within 200 nautical miles of Peru’s coast” and which should thus appertain to it, “but which Chile considers to be part of the high seas”. I. GEOGRAPHY (para. 16) The area within which the delimitation sought is to be carried out lies in the Pacific Ocean. In that region, Peru’s coast runs in a north-west direction from the starting-point of the land boundary between the Parties on the Pacific coast and Chile’s generally follows a north-south orientation. POLISH REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN LAW 2015, Vol. 4, Issue 2 THE ICJ JUDGMENT IN THE CASE OF A MARITIME DISPUTE BETWEEN PERU AND CHILE – SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CONDUCT OF STATES Joanna Połatyńska* 1. Introduction On 16.1.2008, the Republic of Peru filed in the Registry of the International Court of Justice in the Hague (hereinafter “the ICJ”, “the Court”) an application instituting proceedings against the Republic of Chile in respect of a dispute concerning, on the one hand, “the delimitation of the boundary between the maritime zones of the two States in the Pacific Ocean, beginning at a point on the coast called Concordia” and, on the other, the recognition in favour of Peru of a “maritime zone lying within 200 nautical miles of Peru’s coast” and which should thus appertain to it, “but which Chile considers to be part of the high seas”. The dispute is one of a long line of controversies arising from the Pacific War La( Guerra del Pacífico, 1879-1883), a conflict over control of the nitrate industry in the Atacama desert, which has marred the two States’ relations since the late 19th century. The Pacific War is still remembered painfully in the societies of both States, so the public response to the ICJ’s judgment has been loud and often rather emotional. Apart from public * Professor Joanna Połatyńska, Department of International Law and International Relations, Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Łódź 105 Joanna Połatyńska outcry, in the weeks leading up to the Court’s decision, both parties pub- licly stated that they would comply with the Court’s judgment whatever it might have been.

1 THE CHILEAN NAVAL MUTINY OF 1931 Submitted by Carlos René Manuel Tromben Corbalán to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime History, September 2010 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgment. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signature) ......................................................................................... 2 ABSTRACT On 1st September 1931, the most serious mutiny affecting the Chilean Navy in nearly two centuries of existence broke out. The various books and articles which have examined this subject have used as their sources the local press and the participants´ own stories. Just in a few cases, historians have had access to official documents, because they were seldom published or access was restricted until now. This has led to gross factual mistakes in the existing historiography, leading to questionable interpretations and to the creation of legends still alive in Chile and elsewhere. This thesis discusses these topics. The Chilean Navy has in its archives a collection of 35 volumes (about 9,200 pages) of Courts Martial official documents and proceedings never studied by historians. The author used these sources under a special authorization for academic purposes. The following theories of the causes of the mutiny commonly expounded by contemporaries and subsequent historians have been researched: a.

ISBN(ENG): 978-99974-41-71-3 Reproduction in whole or in part is permitted provided the source is acknowledged. La Paz, Bolivia 2015 EVO MORALES AYMA CONSTITUTIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE PLURINATIONAL STATE OF BOLIVIA “The sea we are claiming as a matter of justice is a sea for the people […] a sea for the Great Fatherland; the Bolivian people shall never renounce the sea, Bolivia shall never be at peace so long as the maritime issue remains unresolved, because giving a solution to this kind of issues is a part of integration”. Evo Morales Ayma Speech delivered on 23 March 2014 (Annex 20) PRESENTATION More than a century has passed since Chile invaded the Bolivian Department of Litoral, waging a war among three sister nations and imprisoning Bolivia in forced geographic confinement. Ever since, several Chilean Presidents and Foreign Ministers have understood that Bolivia should not be cloistered up forever after in the heart of South America, undertaking to negotiate with Bolivia on a sovereign access to the sea. Today, and as it has always done, my country is claiming a peaceful solution to its landlocked condition. We have therefore appealed to the International Court of Justice to resolve, by law, this dispute that is hindering Latin American integration. The Book of the Sea is a reflection of the feelings of all Bolivian men and women to share with the international community and all nations of the world the causes behind the invasion and war; the main commitments undertaken by Chile to negotiate a sovereign access to the Pacific with Bolivia; the reasons why Bolivia has decided to appeal to international jurisdiction to find a solution to its landlocked condition; and the damages Bolivia has endured on account of its confinement from the sea.
