Two decades of change among the Tacana in the northern Bolivian Amazon “Al final nos dimos cuenta todos que éramos tacanas” (Tacana leader 2001, quoted in Herrera 2009: 1). 1. Introduction: The Tacana In the mid 1980s, a time of redemocratization and structural adjustment policies in Bolivia, consultations about a region suitable for field research on the situation of indigenous peoples in the context of “Amazonian development” led me to the Province of Iturralde in the lowland north of the Department of La Paz (Figure 1). The culture of its indigenous inhabitants, the Tacana,1 had been documented by German researchers in the early 1950s (Hissink & Hahn 1961; 1984). Also, under the motto La Marcha al Norte, the region was the focus of large infrastructure and agro industrial projects which had already stimulated spontaneous colonization, but local people had little information about these activities nor support to defend their rights and interests. Between 1985 and 1988, I conducted about a year of village level field re- search in the region, mainly in Tumupasa, an ex-Franciscan mission among the Tacana founded in 1713 and transferred to its current location around 1770, San- ta Ana, a mixed community founded in 1971, and 25 de Mayo, a highland colonist cooperative whose members had settled between Tumupasa and Santa Ana from 1979 1 Tacana branch of the Pano-Tacanan language family, whose other current members are the Araona, Cavineño, Ese Ejja, and Reyesano (Maropa).

EXPLANATORY NOTE Resolution 250 (XI) of 14 May 1965, adopted by the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA) at its eleventh session, requested the Latin American Governments "to prepare national studies on the present status of their respective industrialization processes for presentation at the regional symposium". With a view to facilitating the task of the officials responsible for the national studies, the ECLA secretariat prepared a guide which was also intended to ensure a certain amount of uniformity in the presentation of the studies with due regard for the specific conditions obtaining in each country. Studies of the industrial development of fourteen countries were submitted to the Latin American Symposium on Industrial Development, held in Santiago, Chile, from 14 to 25 March 1966, under the joint sponsorship of ECLA and the Centre for Industrial Development, and the Symposium requested ECLA to ask the Latin American Governments "to revise, complete and bring up to date the papers presented to the Symposium". The work of editing, revising and expanding the national monographs was completed by the end of 1966 and furthermore, two new studies were prepared.

    Municipio de Patacamaya (Agosto 2002 - enero 2003) Diario de Ángela Copaja En agosto Donde Ángela conoce, antes que nada, el esplendor y derro- che de las fiestas en Patacamaya, y luego se instala para comenzar a trabajar JUEVES 8. Hoy fue mi primer día, estaba histérica, anoche casi no pude dormir y esta mañana tuve que madrugar para tomar la flota y estar en la Alcaldía a las 8:30 a.m. El horario normal es a las 8:00 de la mañana, pero el intenso frío que se viene registrando obligó a instaurar un horario de invierno (que se acaba esta semana). Vine con mi mamá, tomamos la flota a Oruro de las 6:30, llegamos a Patacamaya casi a las ocho y media, y como ya era tarde, tuvimos que tomar un taxi (no sabía que habían por aquí) para llegar a la Al- caldía, pues queda lejos de la carretera. Después de dejarme en mi "trabajo" se fue a buscarme un cuarto, donde se supone me iba a quedar esa noche, pues 51 traje conmigo algunas cosas; me quedaré hoy (jueves) y mañana (viernes) me vuelvo yo solita a La Paz. Ya en la oficina tuve que esperar a que llegara el Profesor Celso (Director de la Dirección Técnica y de Planificación) para que me presentara al Alcalde. Me Revista número 13 • Diciembre 2003 condujo hasta la oficina y me presentó al Profesor Gregorio, el Oficial Mayor, un señor bastante serio que me dio hartísimo miedo pues me trató de una forma muy tosca. Él me presentó al Alcalde, que me dio la bienvenida al Mu- nicipio de Patacamaya muy amablemente.

    Ciencia y Cultura Nº 36 ISSN: 2077-3323 Junio 2016 47-80 El desarrollo de las bibliotecas en Bolivia Development of the libraries in Bolivia Luis Oporto Ordóñez* Resumen Breve estudio sobre el desarrollo de las bibliotecas públicas en Bolivia. Primero se revisan la serie de leyes que el Estado ha ido promulgando para fomentar su desarrollo, y consecuentemente, la política cultural del país, incluyendo a los libros como parte del patrimonio cultural. Luego se analiza y describe el desa- rrollo desigual que experimentaron las bibliotecas en Bolivia, desde la creación de la primera biblioteca pública en el siglo XIX. En 1906, la biblioteca pública de La Paz pasó a depender del municipio, situación similar al resto del país. Posteriormente se crearon las bibliotecas universitarias, otras dependientes de la Iglesia y organismos no gubernamentales, colegios, unidades militares y cen- tros mineros.     The Legalist Approach to the Informal Economy: An Affirmation of Universality Part One Page | 1 Introduction Scholars, politicians, and economists alike are devoting increasing attention to the informal economy. For better or for worse, its sheer magnitude evidences that the informal economy is a significant determinant in the economies of the developing world. Statistically, informal employment constitutes approximately one half to three quarters of employment in developing nations; more specifically, 48% of employment in North Africa, 51% in Latin America, 65% in Asia, and 72% in Sub-Saharan Africa. 1 Additionally, the large majority of all new jobs are generated in the informal economy. In 2002, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that “over the next decade, the world’s labor force is projected to increase by 500 million workers, 97% of whom will be in developing countries.” 2 Based on these statistics, more workers will enter the informal economy than the formal. Thus, the informal economy is an integral factor in devising development solutions. Some economists conceive the informal economy as a culture produce feature. Others see it as safety valve that filters workers into alternative employment when the formal economy cannot produce sufficient employment to support them. This view treats the informal economy as a kind of insurance against poor economic climates. Both of these perspectives are generally positive. However, a majority of development economists believe that the informal economy is an exploitative system that needs to be eliminated or reduced in some way. Por primera vez el Ministerio de Defensa abre sus puertas en el Día de Patrimonio. MINISTERIO DE DEFENSA NACIONAL Ministro de Defensa Nacional José Antonio Gómez U. l Día de Patrimonio Cultural de Chile es evento organizado Epor el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales, una verdadera instancia ciudadana de celebración y reflexión en torno a las diferentes dimensiones de nuestra herencia cultural. Subsecretario de Defensa Marcos Robledo Hoecker Con el tiempo ha tomado fuerza y ya no sorprenden las largas filas de chilenos expectantes por conocer y recorrer edificios que guardan entre sus paredes importantes pasajes de la historia nacional. Por esta razón, el Ministerio de Defensa no quiso quedar fuera de esta fiesta ciudadana y la plana titular de autoridades; Ministro y Subsecretarios, recibieron a los cerca de 5.000 visitantes que pudieron recorrer por primera vez los principales salones y despachos de esta cartera ministerial. Paulina Vodanovic Rojas, Subsecretaria para las Fuerzas Armadas 2 DefensaalDía EEEDICIÓN ESPECIAL Al ingreso de Edificio Zenteno se ubicó una exposición sobre los 200 años de existencia del Ministerio; desde sus orígenes en la Secretaría de Guerra, recorriendo su trayectoria de evolución institucional y la contribución al desarrollo de Chile de las Fuerzas Armadas y los civiles a la defensa. Fotografías, filmaciones y videos, formaron parte de algunos momentos históricos que se despliegan en el hall central de esta cartera Ministerial. Los asistentes tuvieron la posibilidad de acceder al cuarto piso del edificio, lugar donde se encuentra emplazado el Gabinete del Ministro de Defensa.
