“Building a Future for Venango Area Business!” 6 Goosebumpz Celebrates a Great Season with Employee Appreciation Day

On July 25, Goosebumpz Ice Cream held its second annual employee appreciation day. We closed the business for the afternoon and took our staff to Clarion for tubing and kayaking down the Clarion River. It was a beauti- ful day and the river was “lazy” providing for a relaxing afternoon. Following the trip down the river we had a picnic in Cook Forest, then back to work on the Oil Heritage Parade Float. We have ten wonderful hard work- ing girls who we appreciate very much. They work the business as if it were their own, which allows us to give them a lot of responsibility. We miss them when school starts and especially when they move on with their lives, but we never forget them. Each of our staff leaves a colored hand print on our wall and signs it so we will never forget them. Our only regret is that we didn’t start having an employee appreciation day sooner be- cause, for the 12 years we have been open, we have been blessed to always have a great group of people working for us.

FUN ~ FREE ~ FAMILY EVENT!

GEO-GET-IT! IS A GEOCACHING GAME Learn to geocache ~ show off your skills ~ or just enjoy the park

This is a team event ~ bring your team or find one to join when you arrive

GEO-GET-IT! EVENT is a geocaching game started in Pa by local cachers searching for a way to introduce more people to the outdoor activity. The game teams experienced players with those new to geocaching. Once formed, the teams head out for a series of ten caches (or treasures). Each cache contains numbers. The teams must collect one number from each cache. The object of the game is to get the lowest number total. The game requires strategy and skill for the experienced cachers and helps the beginners understand the basics of geocach- ing. The organizers of the events are Gefinen of New Brighton, PA and mak_1k of Franklin, Pa. Our mission is to share our love of geocaching by providing a fun, free, family activity for our community. Our events are made possible with the help of volunteer cachers, the generosity of local business and private sponsors. We all are well aware of the highs and lows that come with running a business. Some of us have been to the top, and most of us have seen the bottom. It can be tough to climb back up the mountain once you’ve slipped. So how do you go about bouncing back from a slight mishap, or a total collapse? Let’s take a look at a comeback and see what your business comeback may have in common with America’s guilty pleasure: Twinkies.

As you may know, Hostess suffered from an epic collapse when it ceased production last November. The production of HoHos, Ding Dongs, and Twinkies ground to a halt while the general public went in to a shock wondering what they would do without their sweet fix.

The new ownership had quite the task on hand with rebuilding the brands. Of course they did the expected downsizing and rethought the distribution system, but one of the biggest tasks was to get the brands back out to the public. To do this they employed three basic strategies:

Simplify Engage the Customers Get the Word Out

If you noticed any of the billboards they posted, you will notice the lack of words. There was simply a launch date and a picture of a Twinkie. Once the launch date came, the words “The Sweetest Comeback in the History of Ever” replaced the launch date.

They targeted their customers as young men, and engaged them in a way that appeals to them. They gave their customers a chance to be stars by showing their “CakeFace” via Twitter’s Vine service and even got the crew at College Humor in on it.

Finally, they hit the streets to tell people about the comeback, capture their CakeFaces, and throw out some promo material.

Take a tip from Hostess on how to make your comeback. Even if you are not currently in the midst of a fail- ure, you can use these strategies to boost your brand.

As always, thanks for reading and we’ll see you next month! Kurtis, ServiceMaster by Bell, Inc., [email protected]

Back to School for Chamber Staff

The Venango Chamber operated with a full staff this Summer, referred to by Direc- tor Susan Williams as her “Dream Team”. The ladies all sat for a caricature by Illus- trator John Manders and then spent a day in Foxburg, enjoying a bit of last minute peace and quiet before Katie and Ashley headed off to school. Katie is beginning her work toward her Master/Doctoral Degree at the University of Connecticut. Ashley is beginning her Sophomore year at Kent State University, pursuing a Com- munications degree.

While Katie and Ashley will both be missed, social media makes it easy to keep tabs on their progress and allows then to keep tabs on the Chamber activities!

We look forward to their holiday visits!

Venango Area Chamber of Commerce ● (814) 676-8521 ● www.venangochamber.org Cranberry Wellness Center New Member Spotlight 11

This month we would like to welcome the Cranberry Wellness Center and God’s Little Garden to membership in the Chamber! Both businesses are located in Suite 325 in the Cranberry Mall and are owned and operated by Calvin and Paula Bickel. The Cranberry Wellness Center is a unique business that fills the needs of those seeking natural alternative therapies for health maintenance. Nearly 20 years ago, Paula and Calvin made the decision to begin following a vegan diet and after experiencing a number of health benefits, including significant weight loss and loss of arthritic pain, wanted to share their new lifestyle with others! So in 2000 they opened God’s Little Garden, an organic and natural grocery store offering organic, vegan and vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free foods along with natural personal care products. After almost 8 years in business, Calvin and Paula realized that there was a serious need for a provider of alternative remedies in this area and so the Cranberry Wellness Center was born in January 2009.

The Wellness Center provides a number of alternative testing and remedies including: the BioMeridian test which measures the electrical conductivity at responsive points on the hands and feet and can determine the health condition of various bodily organs and symptoms; Nutritional Response Testing and nutritional consultations for weight loss, detox, and general maintenance of health; chiropractic services by Dr. Jean Hoffman who uses “gentle chiropractic” techniques; Beam Ray Light and Sound therapy which increases circulation and oxygen flow, stimulates acupuncture points, and maintains balance in the body’s bio-magnetic field; and a full line of practitioner grade and natural supplements. In addition there is also a gym located at the Wellness Center where members may use a variety of weight and cardio machines as well as take advantage of

Pilates classes provided by the Impel Pilates & Yoga Studio.

Paula says that the Wellness Center “is where our heart is at…we are still learning new things every day!” She also notes that the services offered by the Wellness Center are different than traditional treatments because their primary goal is to provide people with preventative care and education so that they are able to maintain their health rather than react to existing problems, although they do that as well. Calvin and Paula are espe- cially excited about the 1 year anniversary of their location in the Cranberry Mall and their newest goings on - the BioMeridian 900 Club! To learn more about the 900 Club and all of the services offered by the Cranberry Wellness Center and God’s Little Garden, visit their store in the mall, call the Wellness Center at (814) 677- 9140, or email at [email protected]! We hope you will stop in or contact Paula and Calvin to welcome them to Chamber membership and mark your calendars for their welcome mixer on Wednesday, October 2nd!

Venango Area Chamber of Commerce ● (814) 676-8521 ● www.venangochamber.org New Member PEPRO Supports Local Business 15

This month we would like to officially welcome PEPRO to membership in the Chamber! Started in 1992 by local engineer and veteran Vic Garmong, PEPRO specializes in remote and mobile communication shelters that use a patented Faraday Cage system to protect communications from radio frequency interference, electromagnetic interference, electromagnetic pulse, passive inter-modulation, light- ning strikes, and transient voltage. These sites house electronics and telecommunications equipment for use in severe weather areas, during and after natural disasters, during planned events, and in case of other emergencies. The mobile sites are totally green and are designed to make minimal impact on the site loca- tion. One of their products, the off grid power site, is actually powered by solar panels and can run from 1 to 3 months on just 30 gallons of gas. Partially because of their low impact on the environment, many of PEPRO’s sites are already located in national parks throughout the United States; the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management are some of PEPRO’s largest customers. They also have sites on the US- Mexico Border in Arizona and have delivered to or are in the process of negotiating sites in Canada and South America. Locally, PEPRO has one site located at the Venango Regional Airport in Franklin. In addition to the shielded sites, PEPRO is also developing accessories to complement the sites including a pan and tilt antenna mount that a user will eventually be able to control remotely from his or her laptop.

Kelly Lander, the current President of PEPRO, is proud of the way that PEPRO has been able to do business almost totally with local vendors, despite the fact that most of its business is outside of Pennsylvania. PEPRO is located in the Oil City industrial park on Cowell Avenue and employs 19 local workers. Kelly says that an impressive 75% of their suppliers are within a 40 mile radius of Oil City. Some of their local suppliers include Klapec Trucking, Witherup Fabrication & Erection, Schake Industries, Specialty Fabrication and Powder Coating, Franklin Bronze, Betts Machine Shop, and Newell Welding. Although their market is not local, PEPRO is very interested in supporting the local community! Here at the Chamber we are very excited to introduce PEPRO to our membership and tell you all about this unique local business! If you would like to know more about PEPRO or welcome them to Chamber membership you may contact Kelly at (814) 676-5688. We also encourage you to check out this great video tour of their facility on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=zlKn0-WzF4w.
