2020 Cosmetology Portfolio -Alexa Soto- All About Me My name is Alexa Soto and I am 16 years old currently attending the Cosmetology program in Saunders High School. Originally I planned on entering another magnet, however my mother felt that Cosmetology would offer many opportunities and be a better fit for me. Over time I have grown to like cosmo more and more. My favorite part about the program is learning skills in hairstyling and nail care that I won’t have to seek out others to do for me. I can do my own hair and nails without having to worry about paying someone else to do it. I can also provide help to my family and friends by doing their hair whenever they need it. My strongest areas are the roller set and blow drys, as well as trendy everyday hairstyles. My philosophy about cosmetology is to never give up and keep trying because practice makes perfect. Upon graduation, I would like to have my license and leave school with skills that will stick with me throughout life. 2 Accomplishments

During my time in the cosmetology and barbering program I have many accomplishments both in school and outside of school. In cosmo, I placed second with my portfolio for the 2019 Hair Show, I was the first student of the month in my class, I got an 100 on every weekly exam, and I have completed online courses earning certificates in Infection Control, Barbecide, and Barbecide Covid-19. Within school in general, I have gotten high honor roll every marking period, have been recommended for AP U.S. History, AP Global History, AP Chemistry, and a college writing and research class. I have also been in National Honors Society for two years in a row, was made President of the Italian American Club, and made the softball team. Outside of school, in the past year, I have volunteered with a program called Summer Buddies in which I would read to little kids at the library. I am also currently volunteering at my church’s food drive.

4 5 6 SETS Basic Perm Set

Completed on May8 27, 2020 Basic Perm Set Cont.

A full head perm set is a task used in salons to chemically create permanent waves or curls. To achieve this service, I used perm rods, endpaper, a comb, and a spray bottle. First I completely soaked the hair in water using a spray bottle. Then, I sectioned the hair from ear to ear and into 6 sections (3 in front and 3 in back). Once I sectioned the hair, I began the process. I took a subsection that measured to be the width of the rod, and sprayed it with water. Then I combed the hair up vertically at a 90 degree angle making sure there were no bumps or knots. Once the hair was smooth, I took two endpapers and placed one on each side of the hair strand and sprayed them with water. Next I raised the endpapers to the top of the hair strand and made sure they covered the ends of the hair. Then, I placed the perm rod at the ends of the hair and rolled the endpapers onto it. I rolled the rod all the way down to the scalp using motions to ensure that the strand would cover the entire rod equally. I completed this process around the entire head. 9 State Board Set

Completed on October 7, 2019 10 State Board Set Cont.

A state board set is a task that must be completed for the Cosmetology State Test in order to receive your license. This service includes 3 rollers on the top of the head (one on base, one half off base, and one off base roller), seven perm rods on the left side of the head, a diagonal ridge (using waving solution) with 8 diagonal pin curls (4 clockwise and 4 counterclockwise) on the right side, and a “backwards c” finger wave (using waving solution) on the back of the head.

11 Roller Set

12 Roller Set Cont.

A roller set is a service completed using hair rollers and wet hair to create curls. To complete this task, you would need to section the hair into 6 sections (3 in front and 3 in back). Then you would need to get a subsection the width of the roller and make sure it is completely wet. Next you would need to comb the hair up vertically at a 90 degree angle making sure there are no bumps or knots within the hair strand. Then you would place the roller at the end of the hair strand and roll or rotate the roller down vertically to the scalp making sure the hair is smooth and equal. Once you complete the first roller, continue this process throughout the whole head.

13 Pin-Curl Set

Completed on May14 30, 2020 Pin-Curl Set Cont.

A pin-curl set is a service completed to create curls or waves beginning with completely wet hair and using pin-curl clips. To achieve this look you would need to section the hair into 4 sections (3 sections in the front and one section in the back). On the top section of the hair you need to create 9 stand up curls with three rows with three curls each. With each horizontal row you alternate between clockwise and counterclockwise. For the left and right side you need to make two vertical rows with 4 pin-curls each (one row clockwise and one row counterclockwise). In the back section, you must make four horizontal rows with seven to eight pin curls in each row. The top row will have a long stem while the bottom-most row will have no stem. To create a pin curl you must roll a subsection of hair around two fingers, carefully slip the hair off your fingers onto the scalp, and secure the curl with a pin-curl clip.

15 BEFORE & AFTERS Haircut #1 To complete this haircut, I sectioned the hair into three sections (two in the front and one in the back). I then took a subsection from the back section at the bottom of the hair and cut the middle to the desired length and used that hair strand as my guideline. I worked my way up the back section using the first subsection as my guideline for the rest of the hair. I then added hair from the side subsections using the back section as my guideline. I continued this process to create a blunt haircut and remove the client’s dead ends. 17

To achieve this makeup look, I used a light amount of foundation and concealer to cover up the skin. I then applied color corrector to hide any redness. After, I applied blush to the cheeks, contour to the nose and under the cheekbones, and highlight to the tip of the nose and tops of the cheeks. Then, I applied two different shades of purple and blended them on the eyelids and applied false lashes. Next, I lightly filled in the eyebrows with brow powder and brushed them upwards. Lastly I applied lip gloss to the lips. 19

Completed on May 25, 2020 DUPLICATIONS Style Designed By Using Pin-curls

To achieve this duplication, I made a french braid starting from the front of the hair working down to the left side of the head while leaving strands of hair out on the right side of the braid. I then wrapped the end of the braid into a circle and pinned it in place. Lastly using the strands of hair that I left out, I made pin-curls along the braid and pinned them into place.

Completed on June 2, 2020 Blow-dry

To duplicate this blow-dry, I used the basic procedure of sectioning the hair into four parts beginning with the back. I worked my way around the head making sure that after every subsection was completed I used my brush to enhance the outward curl of the blowdry. Once the entire head was finished, I went over once more using my brush to curl the ends and complete the look.

To achieve this look, I first took off any residue left by previous nail polish. Then, I pushed back the cuticles and filed the nails to the clients desired shape and length. After, I applied a base coat. Then, I painted each nail it’s designated color twice. For the striped design, I painted the nail white and then used a thin brush to paint the black stripes. Lastly I applied a matte top coat.

Completed on February 14, 2020 To complete this U-Shaped haircut, I parted the hair into four sections. I detangled the hair and continuously sprayed it to make sure that it was soaking wet at all times. Before cutting the hair, I took notice of the clients shrinkage on numerous days and examined the hair while dry. Once the hair was parted, I took subsections and cut the hair a certain length little by little until I was able to completely understand the clients shrinkage when cut. I then continued this process all over the hair keeping the original shape and cutting off dead ends. 31

Completed on November 1, 2019 To achieve this look, I first washed and detangled the client’s hair. I then blow-dryed the hair following the basic procedure and added a heat protectant. Lastly, I sectioned the hair and used a flat iron to completely straighten the client’s hair.
