I had form’d most of my ingenious acquaintances into a club of mutual improvement, which we called The Junto. -Benjamin Franklin 1 Places The Junto Halloween 2020 Fall Festivities on the Farm Mallika Pal // Places Editor Fresh cheese, baby goats, hayrides around the farm, corn mazes for days, delicious ice cream...you name it, Klein Farms has it all! The family farm in Forks township started in 1935 by Roy Klein and his wife, Ruth. Their son, Layne Klein, married Beth in 1979, and they took over the farm together. They still run the farm today, and kindhearted Layne is currently my boss! Along with Lani, our dear editor- in-chief, I am an Ice cream dipper for Happy Hol- stein creamery, the ice cream side of Klein farms’s store. Although the store side opened in 2004, they moved locations in 2016 to sell their goods in a building close to the road. That year they also opened the ice cream store, made fresh by the very talented Daniel Duffin. On the store side, you can find cheese, raw milk, yogurt, fresh eggs, fresh produce, and fresh meats. Klein farms’s beloved bakers make delicious treats like chocolate chip cookies, carrot cake, and focaccia bread right in the back room of the store. Whenever they bake while I work, my stomach groans from the heavenly smells that waft through the store. The ice cream side has over 20 flavors with no artificial flavors or colors. I may be biased, but this ice cream is the best I have ever tasted. Every single flavor has a lot of effort and love put into it by Daniel. The vanilla, for example, contains cream cheese and maple syrup to enhance the flavor. Other than your classics, the flavors are very unique. They have coconut cow, sweet cream, peanut butter chunk chip, my favorite, black cow (a dark, rich chocolate), and so many more. With fall brings fall festivities. Every year, the farm has appealing family activities on October weekends. The corn maze will keep someone of any age engaged! The hayrides take you around the farm, allow- ing you to enjoy the crisp autumn air. The pumpkin patch gives you a variety of big orange treats to take home and carve into. And of course, the farm animals consisting of goats, mules, and cows are always avail- 2 able to watch and feed! People The Junto Halloween 2020

Q: Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself!

A: My name is Alicia Rodriguez, and I play soccer, lacrosse, and am a drum major of our band! I defi nitely have more school spirit, don’t listen to Dom.

A: I get to represent our senior class and help plan out many events! I love to help others and give us the best year possible.

Q: What are your goals to accomplish for the Student Council this year?

A: To give us the best year given the circumstances and stay unifi ed and strong as a class. It will defi nitely be an unforgettable one!

D:To make the year run as normal as possible for our students. We want to make sure that despite the crazy times we’re in, that the students keep their pride in the school.

A: Working with Dom.

D: Working with Alicia.

Q: How are you adapting to the hybrid schedule?

A: It’s weird but I’m just really grateful to get to go to school. I love seeing everyone’s faces in the hallways, and getting to interact with you all again.

D: I am just happy to get back into the school. Whether it is two days, one day, or even a block... I’ll take what I can get. The hardest part is trying to keep a routine since our week is so broken up, however that is getting easier.

Q: How do you balance your academic and extracurricular life?

A: It can be hard but I just often write down my schedule and take it day by day so I’m not stressed out too much! I like to plan according to when I have extracurriculars.

D: A positive attitude can really go a long way. When things get stressful I always try to have a positive outlook on the situation, and take it as a challenge.

Q: What is your favorite Easton tradition you’ve experienced?

A: Defi nitely turkey week. We all come together and it’s just amazing to see everyone united. I love the bonfi re, then getting little sleep for the big game the next day! Getting to perform with the band is also really surreal dur- ing turkey week!

D: Turkey week is obviously a given, but another one of my favorites is AAG. That is always one of the most fun nights of the year. I love the crazy events we do and how we all just want to beat the teachers.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

A: Daddy Day Care

D: Shawshank Redemption

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

A: McDonalds play pen, maybe not during COVID though, that’s probably not a smart idea.

D: I would go to Antarctica to sled with the penguins. They look like they have a lot of fun and I really think I’d get along with them since I’m about their height.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Easton?

A: McDonalds. You will never know if I’m serious or just joking.

D: Oak, 100%

Q: Pineapple on pizza?

A: Honestly, I like it. I can’t eat it all the time but it does hit different sometimes.

D: Hawaiian Pizza is BANGIN. I do not discriminate with food.

4 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 2020 Fashion Trends

Kellie Painter// Podcast Editor Fashion trends are always changing and evolving practically every day. I feel as though every season I can never keep up with what is in and trendy. That is why I am here today to give you some insight into the latest 2020 fall fashion trends for both, men and women.

I have to start out with the basics colors. Hot colors right now include magnolia, rust, powder blue, and beige. As for patterns we are looking at tie-dye, cheetah print, and lots of plaids. The types of fabrics that I have noticed are faux fur, leather, and sheer see-through fabrics. Never forget to layer, layering will take your outfit from good to amazing. Also, mix solids with patterns on either the top or the bottom. For women, this could look like plaid pants with a plain black long sleeve and chunky booties. For my guys, a solid outfit can be chino pants with layered jackets. To make the outfit more fun add some colors in the layering. This fall is no different from last year when it comes to Doc Martens and wide brim hats for the ladies. White docs are the new black. Almost every time I see someone wearing doc martens the col- or is white. I am going to be honest, I am totally here for the hat trend. They can transform an en- tire outfit. Try to invest in one good quality piece that you can mix and match with just about every- thing in your wardrobe, this could be a good pair of shoes or even really nice jeans. I find that splurging on things like that will only help in the long run because I wear them constantly knowing that they will hold up. Something quick and easy for men's outfits are sweatshirts and flannels. These two pieces are easy and cheap to find. By layering the two it looks like you put some effort into the look. Accessorizing for men can sometimes be hard but simply adding a belt or black cross body bag can add the perfect amount of jazz that it needs. Overall, these are some of the hottest trends that I am seeing at the moment but don’t be hesitant to start your own trend, and don’t forget color is everything. 5 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 Amok, Amok, Amok: How “Hocus Pocus” Became a Cult Classic Sienna Walenciak // People Editor The Disney movie Hocus Pocus tells the story of a One could argue then that Hocus Pocus was a teenage boy who accidentally resurrects a vil- movie destined to enchant audiences. This year has not been the easiest to say the least. Each of us are going through something different, but you are not alone. Here are some ways to lift your mood when you are letting that feeling get the best of you:

1. Volunteer-I love volunteering because it gets me out of the house, out of my head, and allows me to love and serve others. There are many opportunities to get involved. Tutoring kids on Zoom, helping organize food drives and doing maintenance work for nonprofits are just a few. 2. Get Involved in Your Community-Join a school club, get plugged into your church, or take an exercise or art class. I love going to band and helping out with my church’s worship team-it gets me out of the house and allows me to socialize with others while doing things that I enjoy. 3. Get Outside-Take a walk around your neighborhood, drink a cup of coffee on your porch, or do your homework at the park. Studies show that being outside improve your blood pressure and mental health as well as protect against some diseases. Get off your phone and spend some time in the fresh air. Personally, I find that a quick walk outside always reduces my stress, gives me a fresh perspective, and helps me focus on my homework when I come back home. 4. Exercise-You do not have to spend hours at the gym to reap the benefits of physical activity. Hiking, walking, playing tennis, roller blading, swimming, jumping rope, dancing, and biking are a few ways other than running or weight lifting that you can exercise for enjoyment and health. Exercise can help strengthen your heart, bones, and muscles, decrease stress and anx- iety, make you happier (thanks endorphins!), increase your energy and confidence, decrease your risk of chronic disease, and help you have better sleep. 5. A Nutritious Diet-A nutritious diet is imperative for health-your brain and body can- not function without food and proper nutrients. Be sure to have at least three meals a day and a few snacks a day, focusing on eating whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, protein, whole grains, and nuts and seeds. It is also important to allow yourself to enjoy fun foods as well. I love oatmeal with peanut butter and bananas, salads with lots of toppings, pasta with sauce, and Reese’s peanut butter cups. Do what works for you and your body! Enjoying a nutritious diet does not have to be hard-look it as an investment into your health and well-being. Eating health- ily and properly can improve your energy and mood, sharpen your focus and memory, boost your immune system, and protect against disease. Trust me when I say that using food or a lack of as a coping strategy is unhelpful and will lead you to losing control of your life. Find healthy coping strategies and seek out help if you think that you may have an unhealthy relationship with food. 7 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 Continued... 6. Manage Stress- Be sure to stay organized when it comes to school work and obligations! Talk to a teacher or guidance counselor about making a plan for school work and implement it! Procrastination will in- evitably lead to more stress-stay disciplined and be sure to know ahead of time what you need to complete each day and get it done before settling down for a Netflix marathon. Get your work done early in the day so you can relax. Also, plan your work so that you get a few timed breaks throughout the day. When you are done with your work for the day, disconnect from it completely and do productive relaxation that you know will benefit you. I can almost guarantee you that scrolling through social media will not be very relaxing or helpful in the long run. Watch a few episodes of your favorite show, bake a batch of cookies, read a book, or work on a fun hobby. 7. Prioritize Socializing- Isolation is never helpful for your mental health. Whether it is through texting or video chat, at school or at a school activity, or at a coffee shop, you have to be able to enjoy socially-distanced time with others. Social support is associated with better mental and physical health, while isolation can lead to a sharp decline in your health. I always feel better when I’m able to laugh with my friends in school or catch up with them over FaceTime. Also, it can be helpful to seek help from family, friends, and teachers when you feel depressed, stressed or lonely. Sometimes just talking out your feelings with someone trustworthy can make you feel a lot more hopeful. Never hide your feelings and always tell someone if you feel like harming yourself in any way. Do not be ashamed to seek out a therapist or medical support, and feel free to ask others for help in doing so. 8. Do the Next Thing-Sometimes the simplest tasks can feel hard when you are depressed or anxious, and getting through another day at home can feel impossible. I always find it helpful to implement a schedule and stick to it no matter what. I like to get up at around the same time, get ready for the day, and eat a good breakfast. I feel most productive when I do my work accord- ing to a schedule and sit at my dining room table rather than my bed. Keep up on hygiene and do things that make you confident, such as showering each day, brushing your teeth, wearing a nice outfit, and making your bed. Forcing myself to do these things adds up to allow me to feel better. When the thought of the day seems daunting, break it into bite-sized pieces. First, you need to get out of bed. Then you need to get dressed. After that, you can do your hair. When you are done with that, you can make yourself breakfast. Simply do the next thing that should be done, and all your tasks will get done. “there is a miracle in your mess, don’t let the mess make you miss the miracle” -patience Johnson

Materials:

• Plain fabric masks (I used Target’s MAD ENGINE brand in black) • Pencil/light colored pencil • Thin tipped paint brushes • Paint - white, purple, black, and red (I used acrylic, but fabric would have better results) ◦ Alternatively—if you have the patience—you could choose to embroider the masks instead of painting them *TIP: For steps 1 & 2: I recommend putting the mask on and using a mirror to find the right placement. Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas

First, make two dots on either corner of the front of the mask with your light colored pencil for the smile. Outline the two parts of Jack’s nose where your nose is in the mask with your light colored pencil like you did with the dots for the smile. Now you can take the mask off and with your pencil, make a slightly inverted line from one dot to the oth- er to make the smile. Trace smile line with white paint, and fill in nose with white paint. Add vertical lines along smile (however many you want). ALL DONE! Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland

Make two dots on either corner of the front of the mask with your light colored pencil for the smile. With pencil, mark the bottom of your chin to be the bottom of the smile. Then find and mark the center of your nose, and out- line a circle about the size of the tip of your nose. Draw three lines (whiskers) on either side of the nose. Now you can take the mask off and fill in the nose with purple. Connect the two dots and curve the smile down to the line at your chin to make the big smile. With a pencil outline teeth, alternating top and bottom, making sure to follow the lines of the smile. Fill in the teeth, and trace whiskers with white paint. With black paint on a thin paint brush, make a “V” at the top center of the nose (to make it more cat-like). ALL DONE! Vampire

With a pencil, outline the shape of the mouth. Take the mask off and trace the inner lines for the lips, making sure NOT to go corner to corner. Trace two teeth with the pencil then fill in lips with red paint. Lastly, paint the teeth with white paint. ALL DONE!

9 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 Lani’s Limelight Achieving A Culturally Sensitive Halloween Costume

Alania Mariano // Editor-In-Chief

Halloween is personally one of my favorite holidays. The cool weather, the horror movies, and the taste of sweet chocolate are just a few reasons why I love it so much. However, my favorite part about Halloween is being able to dress up as anything I want, except myself. When I was young, I used to pick out two costumes, one for the school parade and one for trick-or-treating. I would dig through the box of costumes in my basement that my sisters wore over the years and made up my own costumes. A detective, an M&M (yes you read that correctly—an M&M), a cat, and an angel are just a few of my past costumes. As obsessed as I was with dressing up, I have grown to see an issue with it. There are costumes we have normalized in America that are offensive to cultures. For example, dressing up as a Native American, a gypsy, or a ninja is not an appropriate way to cele- brate the holiday. In this instance, cultural appreciation can quickly become cultural appropria- tion. Here is why it is not OK: people dress as these costumes for a fun night. A person will get all dressed up, go out in the dark night to trick-or-treat, but then what? The next day we take off our costume to then return to our normal lives. Yet, individuals that are a part of these cultures live in this “costume” everyday of their life. Therefore, dressing in these costumes can be viewed as being less than human. These types of costumes are not fictional characters, such as Supergirl or Harry Potter; these are real people that deal with issues that people of other cultures do not understand. Obviously, not everyone is wearing these costumes to offend anyone, but it is important to be aware of, learn about, and understand this topic in order to prevent it from happening. There are millions of costumes out there that you can pick out for Halloween, but if you have to think about if your costume is offensive, it probably is. So stay safe kids, and do not dress up as a marginalized culture that is not your own! (:

Easton Circle Remodel

Colette Potter // Copy Editor

A Brief History of Centre Square Fourteen years after Northampton County was founded in 1752, the first Court House was built at Cen- tre Square. The Farmers’ Market was also started the same year. It is the oldest, continuous open-air market in the nation. It was here, on July 8th, 1776, that the Declaration of Independence was read. The Court House remained at Centre Square until 1861. Following this, a fountain was ordered from Philadelphia for the center of the Circle, which was moved to Nevin Park on College Hill in 1899, when the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built to honor Union soldiers. The monument was dedicated on May 10, 1900. A dispute occurred in 1902, when Congressman Mutchler went to Washington D.C. to try and have the monument moved to the previously owned Court House space. In 1921, an under- ground Comfort Station was built, and closed in 1969. The first Peace Candle was put up in 1951. TCentre Square was last redone in 1975, with the brick foundation and new pathways.

Future Plans Today, the Circle is surrounded by a two lane road. The Circle at Centre Square is about to undergo some exciting changes. I spoke to Lisa Borick, Easton Redevelopment Authority Housing Program Manager, who helped organize a grant for the remodel. She said that the remodel is to better accom- modate the Farmers’ Market. The project will also create cohesive walking surfaces, which will help wheelchair accessibility. The one lane of traffic will move quicker because of the shorter pedestrian crossings. The organizers hope it will increase the walkability of Downton Easton, and revitalize the in- tent of the Circle as a place for Eastonians to enjoy and congregate.

11 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 The Not-So-Sinister Source of Spooky Season Julia Vinci // Copy Editor These days, Halloween is about small children running around in sparkly costumes collecting candy. It is about fun and horror movies. However, this was not always the case. Halloween originates in the modern day Ireland and France area, and began as a festival called Samhain, a yearly harvest festival. It was one of four major Gaelic holidays, and was celebrated 2,000 years ago. Samhain directly trans- lates to “summer’s end” and took place from the last day of October all the way through the first of November, in between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. It featured drinking, dancing, and all sorts of tomfoolery as a celebration of a good crop.

Spiritually, Samhain was believed to be a time during which the barrier between the human and the spirit world dissolved. In legends, the fae were said to walk amongst the humans, playing tricks and tormenting people. In order to stay safe, Celtic priests constructed huge bonfires, and practiced many rituals. However, they did not keep written records, so the majority of these rituals are lost to the past. Despite the “spiritual intensity” of this time, Samhain does not have demonic or satanic origins. It is portrayed as demonic through movie and literature representation, which began in 1762 with Charles Vallancey, who was fascinated by the culture and wrote a book in which he mistranslated the word Samhain. Instead of “Summer’s end” he translated it into “lord” and “death,” leading many to be- lieve that the Celts worshipped some sort of dark creature. Samhain continues to be celebrated in pagan communities globally. Who would have guessed that such a joyous festival for the harvest would become an event full of candy and frightening fun? Even though it was only partially connected to spirituality, Samhain existed at around the same time as the legends of modern day monsters began to come about. Most humans no longer fear fae stealing their children, or skeletons coming to life, but a good amount of these stories have not been proven untrue. That being said, keep an eye out, because you never know what can happen on a night like Hal- loween. Have fun, be safe, and don’t let the Vampires bite! 12 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 Pros & Cons of Trick or Treating This Year Gabriella Feltmann // Copy Editor Pros • Candy! Nobody can resist snatching up some sweet treats on Halloween night. • Costumes! Thankfully this year Halloween is still on, so you better think of a good costume! • Friends! While you need to stay socially distant, that will not prevent safe meetings with friends to hang out and collect some candy. Stay up late and have fun with your friends! • Decorations! Get out there and check out the cool ways people decorate their houses this year! • Get out of the house! If you are sick of staying in, go out and have some fun. Dress up and celebrate! • There is always that one house that gives out king sized candy bars. You cannot miss out on that! (But be sure to avoid the house with the toothbrushes. You know the one.)

Cons • Masks. While they may keep your face warm, they also have the potential to ruin a costume, unless you incorporate them somehow. • It is going to get cold! Don’t you hate it when the weather ruins your costume? • There might not be much candy to be found. During the crisis, people might choose to stay in and not put out candy to avoid spreading germs. • Why go out when you can have a movie marathon? If you do not want to risk it this year, there are plenty of movies to be watched instead. Buy yourself some candy and watch some good Halloween horrors!

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays of the year, so whether your staying in or going out, be sure to have some fun!

13 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 A Difficult Hallowed Holiday Steven McDonald// Copy Editor Whether it is the chaos of 2020 or a normal year, every Halloween we gather new traditions, festivities, and costumes. Below lists statistics comparing this spooky Halloween to past Halloweens!

Halloween is one of the United States’ largest holidays, by far, and the time when a quarter of annu- al candy sales occur. Children, teens, and adults dress up as their favorite mythical, fantastical, or fic- tional character and enjoy a mix of party events, such as neighborhood meet-ups. Despite even the Corona virus, Halloween is a tradition that most households still plan on celebrating one way or an- other. The most iconic event of Halloween is easily trick or treating, and it will continue this year as well with some suggested guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Anyone that has a costume mask should wear another mask under it, sanitizer should be used before and after taking any candy, and it should be known that participation is “at your own risk.” According to the National Retail Federation, 8.7 million children will be dressing up in the 5 most popular costume options alone, and what they are may, or may not surprise you:

-A Favorite Princess- -Ghost- -Favorite Superhero- -Spiderman- -Batman-

Another 10 million adults will dress up, as well as a tenth of all pets. Trick or treating is probably go- ing to be the most precarious event during this year’s Halloween, but this holiday has always had more to offer for any decoration fanatics, and that will not stop this year either. Halloween is the first holiday marking fall’s gauntlet of large holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, and this year as well, we will be able to see that reflected in the decorations that people will be using, ranging from carved pumpkins to elaborate art pieces, and animatronics. There are of course many who take it a step beyond simple decoration, and create elaborate haunted houses, which have only become more popular in recent years. One tradition that has been falling out of fa- vor though is pumpkin carving, which has led to 200 million dollars less in pumpkin sales from 2018 to 2019. Although decorations and preparations are being made for the outside of houses there will probably be no Halloween parties, which are another popular pastime of the season. Halloween is still going strong even with the ongoing pandemic and participation should require little more than some care, hygiene, as well as whatever decorations and foods for which you are willing to shell out money. Enjoy your Halloween and take care everyone! 14 Points of View The Junto Halloween 2020 The Cunard Collective A Tribute To Chadwick Boseman

You know when you hear the word pumpkin spice the first thing that comes to mind is the beginning of fall. All the food and drink brands bringing back all the pumpkin spice products for a limited time. But is pumpkin spice really that good or just overrat- ed at this point? We asked Junto members about their opinion on whether or not pumpkin spice is a yes or no go.

Some say they love it, that there is something about the spice that makes them feel warm and cozy on the inside and cannot imagine fall without it. However, most are stuck in the middle. Some like it in foods but not in drinks and vice versa. Some do not like neither the foods or drinks, but the scented candles. They say that it is a little over played now because it is literally in everything you see during the fall time.

Some people think it is overrated, that they just taste and smell bad to the point there is an odor left behind and even the scented candles smell fake and gives them headaches. They believe that it is too sweet and makes you want to go to the bathroom. A lot of it tends to be in coffee some of the members don’t drink.

But whether you hate or love pumpkin spice, it is still a fall classic. Everywhere you go it is going to be there from September to November and get a fuzzy feeling inside that fall is here. Because come on, who does not love fall?
