As students enter high school, worlds evolve. Afternoons spent playing outside are replaced by car rides with friends, studying for spelling Required tests is exchanged for research for timed essays. And the worlds created by fictional characters are transformed as well. While childhoods are enveloped in the fantasy of “Harry Potter” or “Narnia”, in high school, reading is dominated by in-school novels, such as “Great Expectations”, “The Great Gatsby” or novels excluding the word readings: from their title but nonetheless called great by literary professors. Not only do these books take students to the next level in literature, but take them back in time, sometimes centuries, creating a plethora of complications for readers beyond the already complex language and ideas. While these books bring up issues that still weigh on society today, be it wealth disparity, are they a higher power or the treatment of minorities, their context is separated from today’s world. Books come with teacher provided disclaimers to excuse sexism or racism that were not considered controversial in the time they were written, but today would deem a work of literature inappropriate. relevant When the positive and imporatant messages of a novel are riddled with contradictory sexism, racism and hate, can the message still be considered relevant? Certainly the books can be viewed in a different light, a reflection on beliefs of the time that are more humanized than when mentioned in a history textbook. But often these to students are secondary to the purpose, and the intended exploration of the author. On matters relevant to the teenage experience, often the novels seem altogether unhelpful. Instead, teens turn to more contemporary works, often without the high esteem of their traditional counterparts. “I like fantasy books and I like books with today? a lot of imagination, and I feel like you read more educational books which you are learning LITERATURE 7
