For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

164 “This is about me”: A Consideration of Spirituality and Desire in Avison’s Poems by Elizabeth Davey When we reflect on the poetic legacy of Margaret Avison, we think of a giant or, as noted in one obituary, a “‘titan’ in modern Canadian poetry” (Kubacki) incongruously embodied in this shy, diminutive woman. Critics have long admired her often-dense poetry, attracted to her “ironically allu- sive manner” and her “spiritualized syntax” (Merrett 95, Starnino 139). David Jeffrey commends her for her “testimony to a philosophical and spiritual progress” (59). “Margaret Avison has probed and celebrated how we apprehend and envision the natural world,” Robert Merrett notes, “in the process acutely yet tactfully embodying the metaphysical issues that stem from our sensations and imaginations” (95). In the mining of her rich poems, admirers have taken cues from her careful selection of subjects in lyrics of complexity and ambiguity. We expect demanding intellectual and spiritual exercise from engaging in the process. I have wondered, though, at her and our reticence to explore one particular subject, perhaps because of assumptions we make about her status as an unmarried woman and her proclivity to eschew conversation about her private life. Little—but not nothing—is said in Avison’s poems about intimacy and sexuality, reinforc- ing our silence. If we put on different lenses of inquiry, we discover several clues that validate the poet’s experience and occasional expression of desire. To begin, it would be inaccurate to assume that because Avison never married, she did not know passion or experience sexual desire. -

H ARTMUT L UTZ The Beginnings of Contemporary Aboriginal Literature in Canada 1967-1972: Part One1 _____________________ Zusammenfassung Die Feiern zum hundertjährigen Jubiläum des Staates Kanada im Jahre 1967 boten zwei indianischen Künstlern Gelegenheit, Auszüge ihrer Literatur dem nationalen Publi- kum vorzustellen. Erst 1961 bzw. 1962 waren Erste Nationen und Inuit zu wahlberechtig- ten Bürgern Kanadas geworden, doch innerhalb des anglokanadischen Kulturnationa- lismus blieben ihre Stimmen bis in die 1980er Jahre ungehört. 1967 markiert somit zwar einen Beginn, bedeutete jedoch noch keinen Durchbruch. In Werken kanonisierter anglokanadischer Autorinnen und Autoren jener Jahre sind indigene Figuren überwie- gend Projektionsflächen ohne Subjektcharakter. Der Erfolg indianischer Literatur in den USA (1969 Pulitzer-Preis an N. Scott Momaday) hatte keine Auswirkungen auf die litera- rische Szene in Kanada, doch änderte sich nach Bürgerrechts-, Hippie- und Anti- Vietnamkriegsbewegung allmählich auch hier das kulturelle Klima. UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RELIGIOUS STUDIES 312 JEWS AND JUDAISM IN CANADA 1992-93 COURSE DESCRIPTION A history of the Jewish community in Canada, from New France to the present. Emphasis on the place-of-origin characteristics of the various waves of Jewish immigrants (English, German, Eastern Europeanof the late nineteenth andearly twentiethcenturies, Holocaust survivors, North African and more recently Russian) and their respective experiences of Canadianization in the various regions of Canada. Among the topics to be discussed are: Jewish-Christian relations; the development of community structures; the culture, religion and ideology of the community. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. One research paper (app. 15 pages in length) on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are required to submit a proposal, including topic, working hypothesis, and bibliography, which will be examined by the instructor and returned. The approved proposal must be appended to the submitted paper. Students are encouraged to talk to the instructor for help with their papers (45%). 2. Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale. -

ECLECTIC DETACHMENT Aspects of Identity in Canadian Poetry A. J. M. Smith I,N THE CLOSING PARAGRAPHS of the Introduction to The Oxford Book of Canadian Verse I made an effort to suggest in a phrase that I hoped might be memorable a peculiar advantage that Canadian poets, when they were successful or admirable, seemed to possess and make use of. This, of course, is a risky thing to do, for what one gains in brevity and point may very well be lost in inconclusiveness or in possibilities of misunderstanding. A thesis needs to be demonstrated as well as stated. In this particular case I think the thesis is implicit in the poems assembled in the last third of the book — and here and there in earlier places too. Nevertheless, I would like to develop more fully a point of view that exigencies of space confined me previously merely to stating. The statement itself is derived from a consideration of the characteristics of Canadian poetry in the last decade. The cosmopolitan flavor of much of the poetry of the fifties in Canada derives from the infusion into the modern world of the archetypal patterns of myth and psychology rather than (as in the past) from Christianity or nationalism. After mentioning the names of James Reaney, Anne Wilkinson, Jay Macpherson, and Margaret Avison—those of the Jewish poets Eli Mandel, Irving Layton, and Leonard Cohen might have been added—I went on to say : The themes that engage these writers are not local or even national; they are cos- mopolitan and, indeed, universal. -

Enhancing the Use of Regional Literature in Atlantic Canadian Schools
Partnership: the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research, vol. 7, no. 1 (2012) The Sea Stacks Project: Enhancing the Use of Regional Literature in Atlantic Canadian Schools Vivian Howard Associate Professor/Associate Dean (Academic) School of Information Management Dalhousie University [email protected] Abstract Research over the past two decades has amply demonstrated the importance of literature to the formation of both regional and national cultural identity, particularly in the face of mass market globalization of children's book publishing in the 21st century as well as the predominance of non-Canadian content from television, movies, books, magazines and internet media. However, Canadian children appear to have only very limited exposure to Canadian authors and illustrators. In Atlantic Canada, regional Atlantic Canadian authors and illustrators for children receive very limited critical attention, and resources for the study and teaching of Atlantic Canadian children's literature are few. Print and digital information sources on regional children's books, publishing, authors and illustrators are scattered and inconsistent in quality and currency. This research project directly addresses these key concerns by summarizing the findings of a survey of Atlantic Canadian teachers on their use of regional books. In response to survey findings, the paper concludes by describing the creation of the Sea Stacks Project: an authoritative, web-delivered information resource devoted to contemporary Atlantic Canadian literature for children and teens. Upon arrival at shore Farley had his first encounter with death as his Major was killed by a German Marine and the body fell beside him. For the next year and a half the troops marched from Sicily to the boot of Italy before finally reaching Rome. The battalion sailed to Marseilles in the south of France and then to Holland. At the end of the war Farley was made a Captain in the Intelligence Corp and stayed in Europe for five months collecting German artillery which was considered world superior. A Liberty ship from Brussels was loaded down with guns, tanks, one man submarine, V2 Rocket, Flying bombs and other military equipment. Upon arrival home in Canada Farley realized that they would be used to make more deadly weapons to be used in another deadly war. Fuming at being so stupid in helping another war he spent the rest of his th life opposing war in all forms and still does to this Farley McGill Mowat was born May 12 , 1921 in date. Sick of human behaviour after the war, Farley Belleville, Ontario. Being an only child for most of fled to the Artic and began writing books, forty-two his life, Farley welcomed adopted brother John. Dad in all. The first three books were about the war: Angus was town librarian while mom Helen had the “Regiment” was about his regiment, “And No Birds hardest job in the world by being a stay at home Sang” was about his personal experience until 1943 mom.
