For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

the storytellers book club presents The Watch That Ends the Night Hugh MacLennan (Macmillan, 1959, now available from McGill-Queen’s) I knew Hugh MacLennan well. I knew him in the 1960s first as a friend and neighbour at his cottage at North Hatley, in the Eastern Townships, then as his editor (for his last novel, Voices in Time), and as his publisher. After his death in 1990, I created the anthology Hugh MacLennan’s Best, selected from all of his work, fiction and non-fiction. In 2013, when Two Solitudes was selected as a finalist for Canada Reads, I was asked by the CBC to speak on Hugh’s behalf, which was a very great honour. Although I can claim to have edited all of the other four books that I have selected for this book club, I did not edit The Watch That Ends the Night, which I think is Hugh MacLennan’s best book. It was published in 1959, when I was still in high school (although I still remember browsing through the paperback version at a Glasgow Station book stall, attracted by the exciting — if misleading — log- ging scene on the cover. Ah, those publishers!). Hugh had spent many years writing it. Elspeth Cameron’s defini- tive biography Hugh MacLennan: A Writer’s Life shows that as far back as July 1954 he had felt able to say that he had the whole novel drafted “from beginning to end,” but it took him several years to finish it. One reason was Hugh’s determination to make sure that this, a sig- nificant novel dealing with major themes, was not going to be rushed. -

UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RELIGIOUS STUDIES 312 JEWS AND JUDAISM IN CANADA 1992-93 COURSE DESCRIPTION A history of the Jewish community in Canada, from New France to the present. Emphasis on the place-of-origin characteristics of the various waves of Jewish immigrants (English, German, Eastern Europeanof the late nineteenth andearly twentiethcenturies, Holocaust survivors, North African and more recently Russian) and their respective experiences of Canadianization in the various regions of Canada. Among the topics to be discussed are: Jewish-Christian relations; the development of community structures; the culture, religion and ideology of the community. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. One research paper (app. 15 pages in length) on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are required to submit a proposal, including topic, working hypothesis, and bibliography, which will be examined by the instructor and returned. The approved proposal must be appended to the submitted paper. Students are encouraged to talk to the instructor for help with their papers (45%). 2. The Giller Prize (1994–2004) and Scotiabank Giller Prize (2005–2014): A Bibliography Andrew David Irvine* For the price of a meal in this town you can buy all the books. Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Caroline Adderson fonds 1986-2004 2.58 m of textual records and other material Biographical Sketch: Caroline Adderson was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1963. After finishing high school, she entered Katimavik, a Canadian youth volunteer-service program, and travelled across Canada, partaking in such activities as working on a sheep farm and building log cabins on a reservation. Adderson completed an education degree at UBC in 1986, and a year later she settled in Vancouver and started teaching ESL. She has spent most of her adult life in Vancouver, B.C., but has also lived for brief periods in New Orleans and Toronto. Her first book of short fiction, Bad Imaginings (1993) won the 1994 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, was shortlisted for the 1993 Governor General’s Award and Commonwealth Book Prize, and in audio format the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) Talking Book of the Year. These stories have since appeared in many anthologies and have been broadcast and adapted for radio. Her first novel, A History of Forgetting (1999) was nominated for the 2000 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and the 2000 Rogers’ Writer’s Trust Fiction Prize. Her second novel, Sitting Practice (2003) was shortlisted for the VanCity Book Prize for best book pertaining to women’s issues by a B.C. author as well as the City of Vancouver Book Award. It won the 2004 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Her works of fiction and non-fiction have been widely published in literary magazines and newspapers. -

A Defense of Publicity Frank Davey University of Western Ontario 1. minimum responsibility of academics as citizens of a national andA a global society, I suggest, is to respond to the off campus when asked about matters for which we have proven expertise—in my own case to respond to a request to speak to a Canadian literature reading group, to serve on an awards jury, to answer invitations to speak to Canadianists abroad, to investigate a pedagogy question for a government ministry, to comment on a book or an author’s death or the construction of a news story if telephoned by a newspaper or radio station. Those outside the academy don’t necessarily view us as especially objective, but they often believe that we have information they may not have or questions they have not thought to ask. And what about those occasions when one is not asked but one suspects that one’s knowledge might change events outside the academy were it disseminated there? Don’t we still have a responsibility to educate—not necessarily to change minds but to enlarge them? The expertise which most qualifies me and many others to speak out on public issues is interpreting images, situations, promises, and various speech acts. It also qualifies some of those off campus, such as cbc’s Terry O’Reilly, host of the program “Under the Influence.” U.S. poet Charles Bern ESC 38.2 (June 2012): 8–12 stein has repeatedly argued that it is only through a society’s intellectuals being willing to contribute to “the education of the public at large” that a society can be “innovative, vibrant, and socially responsible” (“Poet” 28) and its politics avoid stagnation. -

Bennett Metcalfe’s 1985 biography of Roderick Haig-Brown, A Man of Some Importance. Chancellor of the University of Victoria from 1970 to 1973, Haig- Brown (1908-76) was an early British Columbia environmentalist, a sometime logger, trapper and fisherman, and a long-serving magistrate of the juvenile court of Campbell River. According to his biographer, he also received the first Governor General’s Medal for Juvenile Literature for his 1948 book, Saltwater Summer.1 Even so, Haig-Brown’s name and book appear nowhere on the official list of award-winners maintained by the Canada Council for the Arts: the Cumulative List of Winners of the Governor General’s Literary Awards / Liste cumulative des lauréates et des lauréats des Prix littéraires du Gouverneur général.2 Explaining the omission is not straightforward. The most plausible explanation is that Haig-Brown was likely the first (and to date the only) author to receive a Governor General’s Citation for his work,3 rather than the then-traditional medal.
