For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

(Tim) Struthers Asynchronous (For details, see end of this document) Brief Course Synopsis: Please Note: As needed, this Fall’s offering of ENGL*3940*01 (and ENGL*3940*02) may count as a .5 credit in “Canadian literature” if such a .5 credit is required in terms of specific “Distribution Requirements” for English Programs. The topic I have chosen for this course – “Autobiography, Ficticity, Allegory” -- and my personal desire to encourage a creative and a critical and a personal approach to reading and writing offer an opportunity to develop our understanding of traditionally distinct, now often merging art forms and theoretical approaches, of their values to ourselves and to others. As an important facet of this objective, members of this class should consider themselves not simply invited but strongly encouraged to reflect on and to explore the potential that the three different elements of “Autobiography; Ficticity; Allegory” contain for enhancing our thinking and writing in ways that give more scope to the individual imagination. Special attention will be given to ways in which these three elements combine in Indigenous writer (and Guelph resident) Thomas King’s book The Truth about Stories: A Native Narrative. -

Margaret Ross “Of friends and trees, tents, paths and playing fields”:1 Nature, Gender, and Race at Camp Orendaga History 9833B: Environmental History April 25th, 2018 Professor Alan MacEachern 1 Western Archives, Western University (hereafter referred to as ARCC), YMCA-YWCA fonds, Box 5368, Orendaga summer camp newspaper (Orendaga Saga), 1936, 1. Ross 1 Camp Orendaga was an all-girls camp that ran during the 1930s and 1940s near Bayfield, Ontario. Operated by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), it catered to middle- class girls looking to partake in general camp activities and learn specialized skills in “God’s great out-of-doors.”2 Many girls contributed to the writing of the Orendaga Saga, a newspaper that was distributed to campers at the end of their two-week sessions. The Orendaga “scribes” wrote varied articles, stories, and poems to document their stay, often including drawings and paintings to provide visuals. Although the secondary literature on summer camping highlights the perspectives and opinions of adult reformers and camp directors, the camp newspaper offers a rare opportunity to balance their views with the perceptions of youth. This essay will examine the Orendaga Saga between 1934 and 1950 in order to shed light on adolescent interpretations of changing discourses about nature and its relationship to gender and race in the early to mid- twentieth century.3 First and foremost, this essay is an environmental history, and questions what female campers thought about nature and their recreational outdoor experiences.4 While reformers and administrators believed that the Canadian wilderness was beneficial for children and adolescents, campers themselves were far less reflective about nature’s redemptive qualities, and typically viewed the camp setting as a backdrop against which they negotiated personal relationships and burgeoning friendships. -

REPORT FOR ACTION Inclusion on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register and Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act - 100 College Street Date: August 7, 2020 To: Toronto Preservation Board Toronto and East York Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Ward 11 - University-Rosedale SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the property at 100 College Street under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act and include the property on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register. The Banting Institute at 100 College Street, is located on the north side of College Street in Toronto's Discovery District, on the southern edge of the Queen's Park/University of Toronto precinct, opposite the MaRS complex and the former Toronto General Hospital. Following the Nobel-Prize winning discovery of insulin as a life- saving treatment for diabetes in 1921-1922, the Banting Institute was commissioned by the University of Toronto to accommodate the provincially-funded Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research. Named for Major Sir Charles Banting, the five-and-a-half storey, Georgian Revival style building was constructed according to the designs of the renowned architectural firm of Darling of Pearson in 1928-1930. The importance of the historic discovery was recently reiterated in UNESCO's 2013 inscription of the discovery of insulin on its 'Memory of the World Register' as "one of the most significant medical discoveries of the twentieth century and … of incalculable value to the world community."1 Following research and evaluation, it has been determined that the property meets Ontario Regulation 9/06, which sets out the criteria prescribed for municipal designation under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, for its design/physical, historical/associative and contextual value. -

Smith, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 ABSTRACT Twentieth-Century Canadian Law, Psychiatry, and Social Activism in Relation to Pedophiles and Child Sex Offenders Justin Smith Supervisor: University of Ottawa Heather Murray The contemporary conflation of pedophiles and child sex offenders is a prevalent aspect of reporting in news and social media, as well as in government- sponsored efforts to prevent child sexual victimization. Throughout twentieth century Canada, however, legal experts, psychologists and psychiatrists, and social activists were recognizing the harmfulness of grouping individuals who may have a propensity to commit crime with those who have committed the most heinous of criminal acts. As early as 1938, Canadian legal experts suggested that criminal insanity was a myth, advocating for a divergence between legal punishment and psychiatric healthcare, but after World War 2 had enacted serious efforts targeting criminal sexual psychopathy. Successive Royal Commissions investigating sexual victimization and child abuse revealed that Canadian courts, jails, prisons, and remand services were unable to solely deal with the realities of child sexual victimization. Psychologists and psychiatrists of the American Psychological Association increasingly researched sex and sexuality, classifying pedophilia as a paraphilia using child sexual victimization as a diagnostic indicator and criterion. Gay liberation activists discussed inequalities posed between hetero- and homosexual ages of consent and, more rarely, thought about the total abolition of age of consent. -

UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RELIGIOUS STUDIES 312 JEWS AND JUDAISM IN CANADA 1992-93 COURSE DESCRIPTION A history of the Jewish community in Canada, from New France to the present. Emphasis on the place-of-origin characteristics of the various waves of Jewish immigrants (English, German, Eastern Europeanof the late nineteenth andearly twentiethcenturies, Holocaust survivors, North African and more recently Russian) and their respective experiences of Canadianization in the various regions of Canada. Among the topics to be discussed are: Jewish-Christian relations; the development of community structures; the culture, religion and ideology of the community. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. One research paper (app. 15 pages in length) on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are required to submit a proposal, including topic, working hypothesis, and bibliography, which will be examined by the instructor and returned. The approved proposal must be appended to the submitted paper. Students are encouraged to talk to the instructor for help with their papers (45%). 2. Transoceanic Canada: The Regional Cosmopolitanism of George Woodcock by Matthew Hiebert B.A., The University of Winnipeg, 1997 M.A., The University of Amsterdam, 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF Doctor of Philosophy in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) The University Of British Columbia (Vancouver) August 2013 c Matthew Hiebert, 2013 ABSTRACT Through a critical examination of his oeuvre in relation to his transoceanic geographical and intellectual mobility, this dissertation argues that George Woodcock (1912-1995) articulates and applies a normative and methodological approach I term “regional cosmopolitanism.” I trace the development of this philosophy from its germination in London’s thirties and forties, when Woodcock drifted from the poetics of the “Auden generation” towards the anti-imperialism of Mahatma Gandhi and the anarchist aesthetic modernism of Sir Herbert Read. I show how these connected influences—and those also of Mulk Raj Anand, Marie-Louise Berneri, Prince Peter Kropotkin, George Orwell, and French Surrealism—affected Woodcock’s critical engagements via print and radio with the Canadian cultural landscape of the Cold War and its concurrent countercultural long sixties. Woodcock’s dynamic and dialectical understanding of the relationship between literature and society produced a key intervention in the development of Canadian literature and its critical study leading up to the establishment of the Canada Council and the groundbreaking journal Canadian Literature. Through his research and travels in India—where he established relations with the exiled Dalai Lama and major figures of an independent English Indian literature—Woodcock relinquished the universalism of his modernist heritage in practising, as I show, a postcolonial and postmodern situated critical cosmopolitanism that advocates globally relevant regional culture as the interplay of various traditions shaped by specific geographies. -
