She was almost halfway through the book. The young heroine, Florentine, her thoughts full of Jean Lévesque, has just heard Emmanuel Létourneau’s declaration of love and wiped his kiss off her lips. Eugène, her brother, has enrolled in the army; her father, Azarius, is out of work. Her little brother Daniel’s illness is quickly worsening. Fore- shadowing the increasingly dramatic tensions of the novel, the start of the next chapter is marked by the fierce squalls of the close of winter: La fin de l’hiver s’entourait de nuages et de soudaines rafales. Tôt cet après-midi, des nuées basses s’étaient amassées sur le versant sud de la montagne et les vents avaient chargé le bas quartier. Vers huit heures du soir, la poudrerie se déchaîna. For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RELIGIOUS STUDIES 312 JEWS AND JUDAISM IN CANADA 1992-93 COURSE DESCRIPTION A history of the Jewish community in Canada, from New France to the present. Emphasis on the place-of-origin characteristics of the various waves of Jewish immigrants (English, German, Eastern Europeanof the late nineteenth andearly twentiethcenturies, Holocaust survivors, North African and more recently Russian) and their respective experiences of Canadianization in the various regions of Canada. Among the topics to be discussed are: Jewish-Christian relations; the development of community structures; the culture, religion and ideology of the community. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. One research paper (app. 15 pages in length) on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are required to submit a proposal, including topic, working hypothesis, and bibliography, which will be examined by the instructor and returned. The approved proposal must be appended to the submitted paper. Students are encouraged to talk to the instructor for help with their papers (45%). 2. Transoceanic Canada: The Regional Cosmopolitanism of George Woodcock by Matthew Hiebert B.A., The University of Winnipeg, 1997 M.A., The University of Amsterdam, 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF Doctor of Philosophy in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) The University Of British Columbia (Vancouver) August 2013 c Matthew Hiebert, 2013 ABSTRACT Through a critical examination of his oeuvre in relation to his transoceanic geographical and intellectual mobility, this dissertation argues that George Woodcock (1912-1995) articulates and applies a normative and methodological approach I term “regional cosmopolitanism.” I trace the development of this philosophy from its germination in London’s thirties and forties, when Woodcock drifted from the poetics of the “Auden generation” towards the anti-imperialism of Mahatma Gandhi and the anarchist aesthetic modernism of Sir Herbert Read. I show how these connected influences—and those also of Mulk Raj Anand, Marie-Louise Berneri, Prince Peter Kropotkin, George Orwell, and French Surrealism—affected Woodcock’s critical engagements via print and radio with the Canadian cultural landscape of the Cold War and its concurrent countercultural long sixties. Woodcock’s dynamic and dialectical understanding of the relationship between literature and society produced a key intervention in the development of Canadian literature and its critical study leading up to the establishment of the Canada Council and the groundbreaking journal Canadian Literature. Through his research and travels in India—where he established relations with the exiled Dalai Lama and major figures of an independent English Indian literature—Woodcock relinquished the universalism of his modernist heritage in practising, as I show, a postcolonial and postmodern situated critical cosmopolitanism that advocates globally relevant regional culture as the interplay of various traditions shaped by specific geographies. -

Technologies of Identity: The Language of the Incontinent Body in Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel DONNA PALMATEER PENNEE N AN ESSAY ENTITLED “Identity, Genealogy, History” Nikolas Rose explains the Foucauldian sense of “technology” that is signalled I in this paper: Technology, here, refers to any assembly structured by a practical rationality governed by a more or less conscious goal. Human tech- nologies are hybrid assemblages of knowledges, instruments, persons, systems of judgement, buildings and spaces, underpinned at the pro- grammatic level by certain presuppositions about, and objectives for, human beings.… Perhaps the insistence upon an analytic of human technologies is one of the most distinctive features of the approach, … an analysis which does not start from the view that the technologizing of human conduct is malign, but rather examines the ways in which human beings have been simultaneously capacitated and governed by their organization within a technological field. (132; emphasis added) Rose’s terms help to clarify something of what is meant by the “produc- tivity” of “power,” and, while “not start[ing] from the view that the technologizing of human conduct is malign” can permit a more complex view of the historical field than is usually available through cause-effect lenses, I want nevertheless to address the malignancy of technologies of the self. This hurtfulness of history is represented in the literal and figu- rative workings of the incontinent body in Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel, a novel that displays the armature of a self simultaneously capaci- tated and governed by the force fields of negative difference. -

THE CANADIAN WRITER & THE IOWA EXPERIENCE Anthony Bukoski Τ PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TWO-FOLD: to try to piece together from interviewlHsE and correspondence I have had with a number of Canadian authors — twenty-seven to be exact — a sort of general history, a chronological overview of their involvement in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and to try to assess the significance of that involvement not only to the writers them- selves but to Canadian literature in general. I intend hedging a bit by including some writers who became Canadians only after leaving Iowa.1 Could so many writers have studied at the same institution in the United States without its having left some mark? What attitudes about teaching creative writing or the commitment to the writer's life and craft did they form? Given the method of Workshop investigation, the fragile egos of most young writers, and the fact that the Workshop is in another country, not all of them profited from the experi- ence of studying at Iowa. Speaking of her experiences there in the late 1950's, for instance, Carol Johnson, who teaches at the University of Victoria, noted, "Writ- ers on the whole seem notorious for their unhappiness. Legends of particularly unhappy types prevailed [though not necessarily Canadians]. Since writers are apparently predisposed to neurosis, it would be safe to assume that most of them would be unhappy anywhere."2 Those who were satisfied found the programme valuable, the atmosphere con- ducive to work — though perhaps neither so attractive nor congenial as the main character finds Iowa in W. -

Generic Experiment and Confusion in Early Canadian Novels of the Great War Colin Hill he Canadian novel changed dramatically in the years immediately following the Great War of 1914-18. In the 1920s and ’30s an innovative, modern, cosmopolitan, and multi-gen- ericT literary realism began to challenge and supersede the nineteenth- century romanticism that had loomed large in the national fiction at least since Confederation. Two formative literary magazines were found- ed shortly after the 1918 armistice: Canadian Bookman in 1919 and The Canadian Forum in 1920. Both publications printed articles and mani- festos that demanded a new realism capable of representing the modern and independent Canada that had emerged from the war. In these same years, Canadian writers from all regions began to produce modern-real- ist novels in various sub-genres, including prairie realism, urban realism, and social realism. These writers challenged the verbose and ornate styles of their predecessors with a language that was idiomatic and dir- ect. They sought narrative objectivism and impersonality in accordance with the documentary approach they brought to their representations of contemporary Canada. The most ambitious and creative modern realists experimented with literary form and reworked innovative and international modernist devices to express their interest in exploring and representing human psychology. By the end of the 1920s, some of the best examples of these multi-generic modern-realist works had been published, and a few of them are still read today: J.G. Sime’s Sister Woman (1919), Douglas Durkin’s The Magpie (1923), Frederick Philip Grove’s Settlers of the Marsh (1925), Martha Ostenso’s Wild Geese (1925), Morley Callaghan’s Strange Fugitive (1928), and Raymond Knister’s White Narcissus (1929). -

Canadian Children's Literature 11 975: A Bibliography JBHIVR. SBRFLEET & MAR YRU. This bibliography attempts to record those books published in 1975- CCL's founding year-which are directly related to Canadian children's literature. It will be followed, in the future, by bibliographies for 1976 and subsequent years. Our main goal has been to make the list as complete as possible. Accordingly, we have come up with a total of host 300 items-both in French and Enghsh-for 1975. Still, though our investigations have been extensive, it is possible that errors or omissions may have arisen, especially in a few instances where we were unable for one reason or another to obtain an examination copy of s particular work. Where such oversights exist, we would be grateful if our readers would let us know so that corrections can be made in future bibliographies. Generally speaking, the book titles are indicative of the content. In order to remove one possible source of confusion, however, ihose books which are neither fiction nor poetry nor drama-i.e., those books not com- monly categorized as "creative writings-have been signified by the letters "n.f." (non-fiction) following the details of publication for the entry. Cer- tain items for professional reading-e.g., the new edition of Sheila Egoff's The Republic of Childhood-have also been included in this category. Especially in the case of non-fiction, it may sometimes be question- able whether a particular book is more appropriate to an adult or an adoles- cent reader. We have tried-while still being judicious-also to be reasonably open to the range of interests and needs, often quite sophisticated, that many children and teenagers have. -

IRWIN Opinion BY DONALD CAMERON A QUARTERLY OF CRITICISM AND R€VI€W SWARMING OF POETS An Editorial Reportage George Woodcock WHEN Canadian Literature began, twelve years ago, I promised that every boo! k oTHf Everse by a Canadian poet, as well as every novel published in this country, would be reviewed in its pages. It was an easy promise in a year—1959 — when twenty-four volumes of poetry were all that the bibliographer who compiled our checklist of publications could discover. All twenty-four, I believe, were duly reviewed. Through the Fifties, Northrop Frye, writing his yearly poetry article in the University of Toronto Quarterly, had been able to devote a few sentences or even a few paragraphs to every book of verse that appeared ; they came, in those days, mainly from the regular publishers, who lost money on good poets to give prestige to their lists. There were few small presses; amateur publishing hardly existed; the mimeograph revolution had not begun. The change since then was brought home to me with formidable emphasis on a recent morning when nineteen books of verse arrived for review in one mail delivery. -
Genre, Narrative, and History in Timothy Findley's the Wars
臺大文史哲學報 第七十二期 2010年05月 頁129~151 臺灣大學文學院 Genre, Narrative, and History in Timothy Findley’s The Wars Wang, Mei-chuen∗ Abstract Timothy Findley’s The Wars (1977) started to investigate the underlying ideological assumptions about the writing of history before the rise of the postmodern epistemological and ontological questioning about history. Its problematization of realist presumptions of historical representation has been analysed by commentators, but the way Findley engages in genre transgression in order to unsettle history’s claims to authenticity and objectivity has not received adequate critical attention. This essay is concerned with how he employs the biographic form for his protagonist’s story but juxtaposes it with a nameless researcher’s collection of information about him and investigation into related historical documents as a metafictional device to problematize the writing of biography and history as mimetic representation. The focus will be on the narrative strategies used to achieve genre transgression and blur the distinction between biography and history. Integrating elements of factual history with the world of fiction, the two novels approach the issue of historical representation from a metahistorical perspective that allows for alternative visions of historical events and epistemological and ontological questioning of historiography. Linda Hutcheon celebrates Famous Last Words as a classic example of historiographic metafiction because it exhibits an intense postmodern self-reflexivity while simultaneously remaining grounded in social, historical, and political realities (13).
