The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -

Homer's Iliad Via the Movie Troy (2004)
23 November 2017 Homer’s Iliad via the Movie Troy (2004) PROFESSOR EDITH HALL One of the most successful movies of 2004 was Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt as Achilles. Troy made more than $497 million worldwide and was the 8th- highest-grossing film of 2004. The rolling credits proudly claim that the movie is inspired by the ancient Greek Homeric epic, the Iliad. This was, for classical scholars, an exciting claim. There have been blockbuster movies telling the story of Troy before, notably the 1956 glamorous blockbuster Helen of Troy starring Rossana Podestà, and a television two-episode miniseries which came out in 2003, directed by John Kent Harrison. But there has never been a feature film announcing such a close relationship to the Iliad, the greatest classical heroic action epic. The movie eagerly anticipated by those of us who teach Homer for a living because Petersen is a respected director. He has made some serious and important films. These range from Die Konsequenz (The Consequence), a radical story of homosexual love (1977), to In the Line of Fire (1993) and Air Force One (1997), political thrillers starring Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford respectively. The Perfect Storm (2000) showed that cataclysmic natural disaster and special effects spectacle were also part of Petersen’s repertoire. His most celebrated film has probably been Das Boot (The Boat) of 1981, the story of the crew of a German U- boat during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1941. The finely judged and politically impartial portrayal of ordinary men, caught up in the terror and tedium of war, suggested that Petersen, if anyone, might be able to do some justice to the Homeric depiction of the Trojan War in the Iliad. -

EXCERPTS FROM HOMER Excerpts from Iliad Six (Hector is the oldest son of Troy’s King Priam, and the chief defender of the city. He leaves battle temporarily to return to the city.) Focus questions: 1. What are the main roles of women in this section – i.e., what are the actions of the Trojan women, Theano, Hecuba (the queen, Hector’s mother) and Andromache? 2. How do women’s roles support the survival of the city – or do they? 3. In what ways do women contribute to or detract from a man’s honor? 4. Hector and Andromache’s relationship is perfect in Greek terms – how do they relate to one another? What is the balance of “power”? What roles does each play in the family? Now when Hector reached the Scaean gates and the oak tree, the wives and daughters of the Trojans came running towards him to ask after their sons, brothers, kinsmen, and husbands: he told them to set about praying to the gods, and many were made sorrowful as they heard him. Presently he reached the splendid palace of King Priam, adorned with colonnades of hewn stone. In it there were fifty bedchambers- all of hewn stone- built near one another, where the sons of Priam slept, each with his wedded wife. Opposite these, on the other side the courtyard, there were twelve upper rooms also of hewn stone for Priam's daughters, built near one another, where his sons-in-law slept with their wives. When Hector got there, his fond mother came up to him with Laodice the fairest of her daughters. -

But, while it would be easy to agree on three-fourths of the matter to be included in such a scope, perhaps hardly any two persons would be in exact accordance with regard to the rest; with many pieces which lie on the border line of excellence, the decision must be made on a balance of very slight considerations, and becomes in the end one rather of personal taste than of any fixed principle. Columbus, Ohio: Slavica Publishers, 1987. 597 pages. Hardcover US$29.95. ISBN 0-89357-173-3. As every folklorist knows, the co-founders of the modern study of oral poetry are the classicist M ilman Parry and his student, the slavicist Albert Lord. Lord has had his festschrift: Oral Traditional Literature: A Festschrift for Albert Bates Lord, ed. John Miles Foley (1981). The prolific editor of that work has also given us the standard bibliography_ Oral-Formulaic Theory and Research: An Introduction and Annotated Bibliography (1984)_as well as a welcome history~The Theory of Oral Composition: History and Methodology (1988)— of the Parry-Lord theory and its in fluence. Now Foley has produced a memorial festschrift for Parry, who died in 1935. The work starts off with a preface by Albert Lord, a pleasantly anecdotal re flection on Parry’s life and influence. It is followed by the editor’s somewhat con fusing introduction. According to Foley, “ Parry’s activity in the field . • initiated the comparative method in oral literature research ” (18). Foley goes on to say that “ Africa, with its plethora of tongues and traditions, is beginning to yield startling new information about oral tradition and culture, while some of the most ancient civi lization of the world, among them the Indie, Sumerian, and Hittite, also show signs of oral transmission of tales,” and he concludes these thoughts with the assertion that “ [t]his enormous field of research and scholarship, still in its relative infancy, is ul timately the bequest of M ilm an Parry ” (19). -

Achilles’ suffering is centered on the loss of his best friend Patroclus, while the suffering of Priam – although long in the making due to the attack on his city and his family – has reached a new level of despair with the loss of his dearest son Hector. -

Oral Tradition, 6/1 (1991): 79-92 Compound Diction and Traditional Style in Beowulf and Genesis A Jeffrey Alan Mazo One of the most striking features of Anglo-Saxon alliterative poetry is the extraordinary richness of the vocabulary. Many words appear only in poetry; almost every poem contains words, usually nominal or adjectival compounds, which occur nowhere else in the extant literature. Creativity in coining new compounds reaches its apex in the 3182-line heroic epic Beowulf. In his infl uential work The Art of Beowulf, Arthur G. Brodeur sets out the most widely accepted view of the diction of that poem (1959:28): First, the proportion of such compounds in Beowulf is very much higher than that in any other extant poem; and, secondly, the number and the richness of the compounds found in Beowulf and nowhere else is astonishingly large. It seems reasonable, therefore, to regard the many unique compounds in Beowulf, fi nely formed and aptly used, as formed on traditional patterns but not themselves part of a traditional vocabulary. And to say that they are formed on traditional patterns means only that the character of the language spoken by the poet and his hearers, and the traditional tendency towards poetic idealization, determined their character and form. Their elevation, and their harmony with the poet’s thought and feeling, refl ect that tendency, directed and controlled by the genius of a great poet. It goes without saying that the poet of Beowulf was no “unwashed illiterate,” but a highly trained literary artist who could transcend the traditional medium. -

447 The Historical Background of the Trojan War. By John L. Myres and K. T. Frost. 1. Rameses III. and the Sea-Haiders. To give complete and accurate account of events in the Levant during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries B. C. is one of the most diffi- cult tasks presented by ancient history. It is also one of the most fasci- nating; for it must include not only a summary of what is known of the peoples of Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt, but also a survey of the My- cenean Age, and the Late Minoan "Sea-Raiders". It is moreover the historical background of the Trojan War. It was a time of great unrest, of fierce invasions and national migrations, whose effects lasted long. At the turn of the Century, in 1200 B. C. these are the main lines of the picture. From the Adriatic Sea to the Persian Gulf a large pro- portion of cities and tribes were independent of any great overlord. Knossos had been OTerthrown for some two centuries and although partly reinhabited it no longer ruled the waves, and the Mediterranean was swept by the Late Minoan sea-rovers. Egypt was powerless abroad and decadent at home. Babylon was just driving out the Kassites who had ruled for some centuries, and as yet the new native dynasty had little influence outside^). Assyria, whose power had greatly declined since the death of Tukulti-Ninib some forty years earlier, was beginning to reassert herseif but was still fully occupied in guarding her own frontiers. The empire of the Hittites was being finally overthrown by a fierce invasion of the Muski Phrygians who had crossed from Europe and were devastating Asia Minor.
