Railtalk Issue 52x Magazine January 2011 ISSN 1756 - 5030 Xtra št’astný nový rok / glückliches neues Jahr Welcome to the Railtalk Magazine Xtra, which compliments the main Railtalk Magazine and means that we can put even more pages together every month. As always in Xtra, we focus on life outside the UK, and once again we have some excellent Welcome shots from some of Europes finest photographers. Our “From the UK” section has a look back at 2010 in the UK. Even more snow in Europe and the UK has caused all sorts of chaos on the rails, but as the year ended things seemed to have settled down and milder weather was forecast. Last month I mentioned that thieves had stolen loco number plates from the site of the railway museum in Contents Contact Us Lužná Rakovníka, Czech Republic, and I was saddened again this month to hear that thieves got into several preserved locos at Kirby Stephen in England and stripped copper and other metals including cabling causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. Once again this action is deplorable and must be stopped, those responsable for all such crimes must be given tough sentences. Pg 2 - Welcome Editor: David On a lighter note I hope that you all have had an excellent New Year, and are looking forward to an action packed 2011. Pg 4 - Pictures [email protected] Pg 56 - News David Pg 72 - From the UK Co Editor: Andy Patten Pg 96 - From the Archives [email protected] Once again many thanks to the many people who have contributed this month, it really makes our task of putting this magazine together a joy when we see so many great photos.

siemens.com/mobility/vectron How to transform borders into connections? Vectron. The locomotive that’s forging new paths. Creating Corridors Creating Corridors With liberalized markets, widely varying national requirements and changing customer needs, today rail-based passenger and freight transportation has to be more flexible than ever. New paths are needed – both in terms of ideas and geography. 2 Vectron – the new locomotives for those who want to – and have to – meet Europe’s current and future requirements and transportation needs. Vectron was developed based on information from interviews with many different operators, and on experience gained from more than 1,900 Eurosprinters and Eurorunners in operation. Ensured viability into the future, investment security, environmental compatibility and fungibility were most important to operators. Vectron responds to these needs by combining proven strengths with future-oriented strategies and innovations. Come aboard and discover the locomotive that forges new paths – to ensure a successful future for your freight, regional or intercity traffic. 3 Planning with more certainty Europe is changing. The choice of the right locomotive today will dic- tate your success tomorrow. Equip yourself for a changing future – with Vectron, your plans and investment are secure. After all, Vectron com- bines mature and proven technology with market-oriented modular- ity and flexibility. This translates into a new freedom of motion in all phases of your vehicle’s lifecycle. Practical modularity. Vectron focuses Vectron in the high-performance class as on what’s most important – your suc- well. The bogie is designed with wheel cess. That’s why the new vehicle concept brake disks and a standard pivot solution makes no compromises when it comes to that proved its value in the Eurosprinter modularity.
