  • Qualitative Changes in Ethno-Linguistic Status : a Case Study of the Sorbs in Germany
Qualitative Changes in Ethno-linguistic Status: A Case Study of the Sorbs in Germany by Ted Cicholi RN (Psych.), MA. Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Political Science School of Government 22 September 2004 Disclaimer Although every effort has been taken to ensure that all Hyperlinks to the Internet Web sites cited in this dissertation are correct at the time of writing, no responsibility can be taken for any changes to these URL addresses. This may change the format as being either underlined, or without underlining. Due to the fickle nature of the Internet at times, some addresses may not be found after the initial publication of an article. For instance, some confusion may arise when an article address changes from "front page", such as in newspaper sites, to an archive listing. This dissertation has employed the Australian English version of spelling but, where other works have been cited, the original spelling has been maintained. It should be borne in mind that there are a number of peculiarities found in United States English and Australian English, particular in the spelling of a number of words. Interestingly, not all errors or irregularities are corrected by software such as Word 'Spelling and Grammar Check' programme. Finally, it was not possible to insert all the accents found in other languages and some formatting irregularities were beyond the control of the author. Declaration This dissertation does not contain any material which has been accepted for the award of any other higher degree or graduate diploma in any tertiary institution.

FORTIFICATION RENAISSANCE: THE ROMAN ORIGINS OF THE TRACE ITALIENNE Robert T. Vigus Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2013 APPROVED: Guy Chet, Committee Co-Chair Christopher Fuhrmann, Committee Co-Chair Walter Roberts, Committee Member Richard B. McCaslin, Chair of the Department of History Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Vigus, Robert T. Fortification Renaissance: The Roman Origins of the Trace Italienne. Master of Arts (History), May 2013, pp.71, 35 illustrations, bibliography, 67 titles. The Military Revolution thesis posited by Michael Roberts and expanded upon by Geoffrey Parker places the trace italienne style of fortification of the early modern period as something that is a novel creation, borne out of the minds of Renaissance geniuses. Research shows, however, that the key component of the trace italienne, the angled bastion, has its roots in Greek and Roman writing, and in extant constructions by Roman and Byzantine engineers. The angled bastion of the trace italienne was yet another aspect of the resurgent Greek and Roman culture characteristic of the Renaissance along with the traditions of medicine, mathematics, and science. The writings of the ancients were bolstered by physical examples located in important trading and pilgrimage routes. Furthermore, the geometric layout of the trace italienne stems from Ottoman fortifications that preceded it by at least two hundred years. The Renaissance geniuses combined ancient bastion designs with eastern geometry to match a burgeoning threat in the rising power of the siege cannon. Copyright 2013 by Robert T. Vigus ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the assistance and encouragement of many people.

  • The Attractiveness of Court Culture During the Jagiellonian Era
Odrodzenie i Reformacja w Polsce PL ISSN 0029‑8514 Special Issue Małgorzata Wilska (Warsaw) The Attractiveness of Court Culture during the Jagiellonian Era Court culture is generated predominantly by the social milieu surround‑ ing the king and monarchic authority. The court guaranteed a suitable setting for all the activity of the monarch and royal accounts did not separate expenses for the private needs of the ruler and his family and those of a state character. The transmission of cultural values occurred everywhere where the king and court stayed: on the meadow where land court sessions were held, at the castle during a feast, at an assembly, in the course of a hunt, and along the entire route of the king’s entourage. It should be kept in mind that the governance of Władysław II Jagiełło and his successors involved incessant motion, a constant traversing across Polish lands from Cracow to Lithuania. The image of the king viewed directly was connected in social mentality with a model of the monarch moulded by tradition and court ideology. This image was composed of two overlapping visions: the sacrum and the profanum. The former demanded respect for the God’s anointed, and the latter rendered him closer to the perspective of the subjects and exposed him to criticism.1 Chronicles enable us seeing changes occurring in the ideology of power during the reign of the Piast dynasty. Casimir III the Great was already far from the image of the warrior‑king and defender of the homeland depicted by Gallus writing about Bolesław I the Brave.

  • Agatha: Slavic Versus Salian Solutions -31
AGATHA: SLAVIC VERSUS SALIAN SOLUTIONS -31- AGATHA, MOTHER OF ST. MARGARET: THE SLAVIC VERSUS SALIAN SOLUTIONS – A CRITICAL OVERVIEW by William Humphreys, BA(Hons), MSI1 ABSTRACT The published evidence is reviewed and critically assessed regarding the ancestry of Agatha, mother of St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland. The debate continues, and although the solution remains in doubt, the author concludes that on balance the evidence is stronger for the Slavic ancestry rather than the Germanic (Salian) one. Foundations (2003) 1 (1): 31-43 © Copyright FMG As we enter the 21st century we are no nearer to identifying, or agreeing upon, the maternal ancestry of one of the most important characters in Scottish medieval history – St. Margaret, wife of King Malcolm III (d.1093). The dynastic usurpation and post- invasion trauma of 1066 dictated that St. Margaret’s maternal origins were of secondary importance to English Chroniclers until the marriage of her daughter Edith-Matilda to Henry I in 1100. The debate as to the maternal ancestry of St. Margaret is now becoming more relevant as the known pool of descendants grows ever larger and align themselves, as do many writers, to one of two basic, generic solutions – Slavic or Salian. The last six years have seen a re-igniting of the debate with seven major articles being published2. Historiographers may already look back at the flurry of articles in the late 1930s/early 1950s as a sub-conscious attempt by the writers of the time to align with or distance themselves from Germany. Several (Fest, 1938; Moriarty, 1952) sought to establish Agatha as an otherwise unknown daughter of St.

Huffman, Grantham/Pennsylvania The 900th anniversary of the death of Emperor Henry IV (7 August 2006) occasioned several special colloquia (in Cologne, Speyer, Goslar) and publications in celebration of the so-called »Year of the Salians«1. While several scholarly publications and exhibits also appeared with specific focus on Henry IV himself2, the present volume contains the papers given at a colloquium held at the University of Cologne (26–30 September 2006), which accordingly focused on the Salian dynasty’s history in the lower Rhine region. Prof. Dr. Tilman Struve (emeritus professor at the University of Cologne), who has spent much of his career studying the Salian house during the Investiture Struggle3, lends his considerable expertise to framing this collection of disparate essays. Published conference proceedings are always a mixed bag, and this volume is no exception. Essays range from a virtually undocumented 11-page sketch to a remarkably fulsome 76-page study complete with primary and secondary source citations at least as long as the article itself. Helpful if not groundbreaking Zusammenfassungen of scholarship on selected topics are joined with detailed new research findings that have also been subsequently published elsewhere. And while some articles focus specifically on the Salian dynasty, others do so only tangentially because their topics happened to be located in the (usually late) Salian era.
