TADEUSZ WASILEWSKI (Warszawa) POCHODZENIE EMNILDY, TRZECIEJ ŻONY BOLESŁAWA CHROBREGO A GENEZA POLSKIEGO WŁADZTWA NAD MORAWAMI Do spornych, dotąd nie rozwiązanych zagadnień z wczesnych dziejów dynastii piastowskiej należy pochodzenie Emnildy — długoletniej mał żonki Bolesława Chrobrego, matki Mieszka II. O Emnildzie mamy jedynie unikalny przekaz współczesnego jej kronikarza saskiego, biskupa merse- burskiego Thietmara: tertia (uxor Bolizlavi) fuit Emnildis, edita a vene rabili seniore Dobremiro1. Overview Dramatic pinnacles of white rock, flower-filled meadows, fir forests, and picturesque villages are all part of the renowned Italian Dolomites, protected in national and regional parks and recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The luminous limestone range is the result of geological transformation from ancient sea floor to mountaintop. The region is a landscape of grassy balconies perched above Alpine lakes, and Tyrolean hamlets nestled in lush valleys, crisscrossed by countless hiking and walking trails connecting villages, Alpine refuges, and cable cars. The Dolomites form the frontier between Germanic Northern Europe and the Latin South. -
Senatus Aulicus. the Rivalry of Political Factions During the Reign of Sigismund I (1506–1548)
Jacek Brzozowski Wydział Historyczno-Socjologiczny Uniwersytet w Białymstoku Senatus aulicus. The rivalry of political factions during the reign of Sigismund I (1506–1548) When studying the history of the reign of Sigismund I, it is possible to observe that in exercising power the monarch made use of a very small and trusted circle of senators1. In fact, a greater number of them stayed with the King only during Sejm sessions, although this was never a full roster of sena- tors. In the years 1506–1540 there was a total of 35 Sejms. Numerically the largest group of senators was present in 1511 (56 people), while the average attendance was no more than 302. As we can see throughout the whole exa- mined period it is possible to observe a problem with senators’ attendance, whereas ministers were present at all the Sejms and castellans had the worst attendance record with absenteeism of more than 80%3. On December 15, 1534 1 This type of situation was not specific to the reign of Sigismund I. As Jan Długosz reports, during the Sejm in Sieradz in 1425, in a situation of attacks of the knights against the Council, the monarch suspended public work and summoned only eight trusted councellors. In a letter from May 3, 1429 Prince Witold reprimanded the Polish king for excessively yielding to the Szafraniec brothers – the Cracow Chamberlain – Piotr and the Chancellor of the Crown Jan. W. Uruszczak, Państwo pierwszych Jagiellonów 1386–1444, Warszawa 1999, p. 48. 2 In spite of this being such a small group, it must be noted that it was not internally coherent and homogenous. -

The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -

Fernandez-Morera: Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Me Comparative Civilizations Review 21 Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Medieval Spain Dario Fernandez-Morera [email protected] It is widely accepted that under Islam the Jewish community of Spain briefly enjoyed a “Golden Age.” However, it is far less widely understood that Muslim, Christian, and Jewish legal and historical sources indicate that favorable treatment violated medieval Islamic law and also that even under the best circumstances, Jews remained subject to the vicissitudes of their condition as dhimmis (“protected” non-Muslims). If there was brief good treatment, it was because of tactical needs of particular Muslim rulers, not legal considerations. Marginalized groups who side with a successful invader normally see their status rise with a change in the political fortunes.1 The Jewish community of Spain was no exception. -

Selected Ancestors of the Chicago Rodger's
Selected Ancestors of the Chicago Rodger’s Volume I: Continental Ancestors Before Hastings David Anderson March 2016 Charlemagne’s Europe – 800 AD For additional information, please contact David Anderson at: [email protected] 508 409 8597 Stained glass window depicting Charles Martel at Strasbourg Cathedral. Pepin shown standing Pepin le Bref Baldwin II, Margrave of Flanders 2 Continental Ancestors Before Hastings Saints, nuns, bishops, brewers, dukes and even kings among them David Anderson March 12, 2016 Abstract Early on, our motivation for studying the ancestors of the Chicago Rodger’s was to determine if, according to rumor, they are descendants of any of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell. We relied mostly on two resources on the Internet: Ancestry.com and Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. We have been subscribers of both. Finding the ancestral lines connecting the Chicago Rodger’s to one or more of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell was the most time consuming and difficult undertaking in generating the results shown in a later book of this series of three books. It shouldn’t be very surprising that once we found Earls in Scotland we would also find Kings and Queens, which we did. The ancestral line that connects to the Earls of Bothwell goes through Helen Heath (1831-1902) who was the mother and/or grandmother of the Chicago Rodger’s She was the paternal grandmother of my grandfather, Alfred Heath Rodger. Within this Heath ancestral tree we found four lines of ancestry without any evident errors or ambiguities. Three of those four lines reach just one Earl of Bothwell, the 1st, and the fourth line reaches the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
