The Bellevue Beach development, dating from 1932, was Arne Jacobsen’s first project in what later became known as ‘The White Town’. The gentle rolling waves and pictur- esque lifeguard towers transport us back to an era of pool attendants and changing cabins. Join a guided tour of the Bellevue Theatre (1936) or enjoy the view of the stunning white Bellavista housing development. Further south, at Skovshoved Harbour, is Arne Jacobsen’s iconic white petrol station, dating from 1937. Its charac- teristic toadstool-shaped roof allegedly served as inspira- tion for his 1952 ‘Ant’ chair. Today the petrol station is a listed building and houses an ice cream stall. The grounds of Rungstedlund are beautiful, featuring a garden and a grove that is a designated bird sanctuary. Its unique architecture, location and importance for the en- tire Baltic region earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Entering this majestic Renaissance royal castle is like stepping back into the 16th century. The sun and wind, and the views of the sound from the Canon Tower make for an amazing experience, before descending into the Casemates. In the dark, cold, gloomy cellar sleeps the mythical national hero, Holger Danske, watching over Denmark. This statue park houses one of the most curious museums in Denmark, dedicated to huge plaster, marble and bronze works by the sculptor Rudolph Tegner. The museum building, dating from 1937 and designed by Rudolph Tegner himself, is one of the earliest concrete buildings in Denmark, the material in itself playing a major aesthetic role. Take in the atmospheric contrast between the tranquility of the countryside and the bombastic con- crete architecture before venturing into the octagonal museum space with its 11-metre-high ceiling. Enjoy the absence of large windows in this very special space where every sound resonates among the statues. The house, dating from 1917, was the home of the famous Polar explorer. It was here he planned his numerous expe- ditions and diligently wrote his manuscripts when he was in Denmark. Today the house is a museum and memorial. Take in the stunning view of the Kattegat and the small island of Hesselø, and walk down to Spodsbjerg Lighthouse, right next to The House of Knud Rasmussen. The area is partly protected and features steep coastal cliffs and gentle hills. We, no longer need the traditional touristic elements. This new behavior has especially transformed our travel habits and the travelling industry is the one industry that have taken the digital age to heart. This turn in our mobility is discussed through a historic development where the perspective for the case of Lyngby are being discussed. The discussion leads to the case study of Lyngby. A suburb to Copenhagen, which are developing the city through knowledge. However, as a resident in the city I have wondered why tourism, has no part in the City. I have found several contradictions, such as the tourism office that closes, and a tourist strategy that is being created at the same time, based on a vague report, furthermore the neglection of tourism, which is also made on vague grounds. A statement from the municipality awaked my curiosity; “the fact is, that we don't want tourism”. However as an employee of the city's ​ ​ hotel, I saw many tourists and their need for touristic products. There seem to be a misconception of tourism among the city representants and also a lack of acknowledgement for how tourism can contribute to the local stakeholders, residents and the community.

    SCANDI NAVIAN DESIGN CATALOG modernism101 rare design books Years ago—back when I was graphic designing—I did some print advertising work for my friend Daniel Kagay and his business White Wind Woodworking. During our collaboration I was struck by Kagay’s insistent referral to himself as a Cabinet Maker. Hunched over my light table reviewing 35mm slides of his wonderful furniture designs I thought Cabinet Maker the height of quaint modesty and humility. But like I said, that was a long time ago. Looking over the material gathered under the Scandinavian Design um- brella for this catalog I now understand the error of my youthful judgment. The annual exhibitions by The Cabinet-Makers Guild Copenhagen— featured prominently in early issues of Mobilia—helped me understand that Cabinet-Makers don’t necessarily exclude themselves from the high- est echelons of Furniture Design. In fact their fealty to craftsmanship and self-promotion are constants in the history of Scandinavian Design. The four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all share an attitude towards their Design cultures that are rightly viewed as the absolute apex of crafted excellence and institutional advocacy. From the first issue of Nyt Tidsskrift for Kunstindustri published by The Danish Society of Arts and Crafts in 1928 to MESTERVÆRKER: 100 ÅRS DANSK MØBELSNEDKERI [Danish Art Of Cabinetmaking] from the Danske Kunstindustrimuseum in 2000, Danish Designers and Craftsmen have benefited from an extraordinary collaboration between individuals, manufacturers, institutions, and governments. The countries that host organizations such as The Association of Danish Furniture Manufacturers, The Association of Furniture Dealers in Denmark, The Association of Interior Architects, The Association of Swedish Furni- ture Manufacturers, The Federation of Danish Textile Industries, Svenska Slojdforeningen, The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo put the rest of the globe on notice that Design is an important cultural force deserv- ing the height of respect.
