A former industrial village, Raadvad emerges from the woodland greenery. In this isolated location, the old listed factory buildings, once home to a watermill and the Raadvad Knife Factory, were part of a small community of work- shops, housing, a school and an inn. Enjoy the view of Raadvad Pond and get a real feeling of Denmark’s industrial past. It was here in the heart of the woods that the world-famous silversmith Georg Jensen lived as a child. Today a number of small companies are based here, keeping various ancient crafts alive. LOCATION Raadvad Raadvad 40 2800 Kongens Lyngby #2 THE HERMITAGE HUNTING LODGE The royal Hermitage Hunting Lodge is perched gracefully on the highest point of the Hermitage Plain, overlooking the Sound. Dating from 1734, it was here that King Christian VI held his famous hunt dinners. A point of orientation in the beautiful Jægersborg Deer Park, the Hunting Lodge marks the centre of the mag- nificent par force hunting system. From the Lodge you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the open landscape and the game in the Deer Park. During the summer, guided tours of the Lodge are available. Par force hunting, introduced as a flamboyant display of the absolute monarch’s power, required vast, specially landscaped grounds. The par force landscape of North Zealand is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bellevue Beach development, dating from 1932, was Arne Jacobsen’s first project in what later became known as ‘The White Town’. The gentle rolling waves and pictur- esque lifeguard towers transport us back to an era of pool attendants and changing cabins. Join a guided tour of the Bellevue Theatre (1936) or enjoy the view of the stunning white Bellavista housing development. Further south, at Skovshoved Harbour, is Arne Jacobsen’s iconic white petrol station, dating from 1937. Its charac- teristic toadstool-shaped roof allegedly served as inspira- tion for his 1952 ‘Ant’ chair. Today the petrol station is a listed building and houses an ice cream stall. LOCATION Bellevue Beach Strandvejen 340 2930 Klampenborg #4 COPENHAGEN Denmark’s beautiful capital offers an abundance of un- forgettable experiences, ranging from classic attractions such as Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid and the Amalienborg Palace to art, culture and authentic old neighbourhoods. The boats have been sailing on the four nearby lakes – Lyngby Sø, Bagsværd Sø, Furesøen and Vejlesø – since the early 1890s. The idyllic countryside and old wooden boats make for a relaxing maritime experience, as you glide by historic buildings, rowers and swimmers. LOCATION Sorgenfrivej 23 2800 Kongens Lyngby www.baadfarten.dk #6 THE KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM ” You cannot even begin to express yourself in art until you have experienced something.” So wrote the author Karen Blixen in 1917. Turn back the clock and visit ‘Rungstedlund’ on Strandvejen, once the home of the adventuress and author Karen Blixen. The rooms look exactly the same as when she lived there – the light curtains draped on the floor and flow- ers from the grounds arranged with slapdash extravagance. The grounds of Rungstedlund are beautiful, featuring a garden and a grove that is a designated bird sanctuary. Take in the tranquil natural setting and walk up to ‘Ewald’s Hill’, the highest point in the grove Karen Blixen is buried at the foot of the hill beneath the large beech tree. It opened in 1958. As a result of the far-sighted ideas of its founder, Knud W. Jensen regarding art and accessibility, Louisiana evolved into a world-class attraction. The views of the Sound are stunning, and you can easily lose yourself in the superb art collection, which is one of the largest in Scandinavia. LOCATION Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Gl. Its unique architecture, location and importance for the en- tire Baltic region earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Entering this majestic Renaissance royal castle is like stepping back into the 16th century. The sun and wind, and the views of the sound from the Canon Tower make for an amazing experience, before descending into the Casemates. In the dark, cold, gloomy cellar sleeps the mythical national hero, Holger Danske, watching over Denmark. This statue park houses one of the most curious museums in Denmark, dedicated to huge plaster, marble and bronze works by the sculptor Rudolph Tegner. The museum building, dating from 1937 and designed by Rudolph Tegner himself, is one of the earliest concrete buildings in Denmark, the material in itself playing a major aesthetic role. Take in the atmospheric contrast between the tranquility of the countryside and the bombastic con- crete architecture before venturing into the octagonal museum space with its 11-metre-high ceiling. Enjoy the absence of large windows in this very special space where every sound resonates among the statues.
