Title: community first responders and defibrillators

Main aim: To update HCOSC members on the current position of CFRs and defibrillators

Recommendations: To note the contents of the report

Community first responders (CFRs) Following a successful campaign in May 2016, a further thirteen CFRs were recruited via NHS Jobs. They have now completed their training and have been going live over the last few weeks. This enables the CFR groups to offer more robust cover in the , Fairford, , Highnam, Sedbury and areas.

A further recruitment campaign has just closed with 10 members of the public are being interviewed to potentially become CFRs.

A training course is taking place in September/October with a further course planned for February 2017.

With reporting tools on activity profiles, the Trust is able to review each group and work towards matching availability to activity levels.

We currently have CFRs in 40 locations throughout Gloucestershire and :

The number of volunteers in each group varies from one to eight, with a total number of 89 volunteers. The locations above are grouped in to 11 areas. Support and training is delivered via these area groups:

Defibrillators 227 new defibrillators have been registered on our control system since January 2015.

The total number of defibrillators available in the community and registered with the Trust is: Gloucestershire Static sites: 288 CPAD: 184

South Gloucestershire Static site: 54 CPAD: 33

Further notable developments in Gloucestershire • Continued support from BBC Radio Gloucestershire • Continued support from local MPs and councillors

• Working with the 20 St John Care Home sites; all now have defibrillators installed and training has commenced. This project will be showcased in the press over the next few months. • Actively seeking more defibrillators that we are unaware of through our accreditation scheme – in Gloucestershire we now have over 205 accredited sites. • There were five heart start nominations entered for SWASFT CFR groups – Council Community Team has been shortlisted for the UK Heart Safe Awards following their work locating defibrillators, developing emergency plans and the work they have done for cardiac rehab and falls groups within their parishes. • Closely working with parish councils • Further CFR recruitment campaign in January and April 2017via NHS Jobs • The Rotary Group (in conjunction with SWASFT) received a highly commended for Fundraising Project of the Year. • Supporting many large organisations who are purchasing their own defibrillators. • Working with the University of Gloucestershire to install defibrillators at all sites as well as a health awareness session to new students during fresher’s week in partnership with the CCG. • Working with Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, with four more single- model co-responder stations at Moreton in Marsh, Stow-on-the- Wold, and Fairford. • Further work with Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service developing a Cardiac Care project taking place at all fulltime fire stations; two in Cheltenham, two in Gloucester and one in Stroud are all now responding to patients in cardiac arrest (patients who are not conscious and not breathing). • As part of the South Gloucestershire Care Home Project, a further ten care homes in South Gloucestershire have been identified using the reporting tool which profiles activity in South Gloucestershire, the trust is engaging with these homes and defibrillators have been installed and training delivered.
