Detroit Institute of Art for Dance! American Art 1830-1960 & Fifty Years of Collecting: Detroit Institute of Arts’ Friends of Prints, Drawings and Photographs Anniversary Exhibition
Dance! American Art 1830-1960 is a multimedia exhibition featuring more than 90 of America’s most spectacular works of art alongside filmic representations that explain and celebrate dance as central to American life and culture.. The exhibition brings together the greatest nineteenth-century American artists including John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Mary Cassatt; spotlights the superstars of the Harlem Renaissance including Aaron Douglas, William Johnson, and James Van Der Zee and features the artists who shaped the aesthetics of modern dance including Isamu Noguchi, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol. Since its founding in 1965–66 as the Print and Drawing Club, (FPDP) has commissioned, purchased or given the DIA as gifts hundreds of works on paper. Among the featured works are Berenice Abbott’s New York at Night, Robert Frank’s Belle Isle Detroit, Erich Heckel‘s Die Brucke poster, Edvard Munch’s Lovers, Charles Burchfield’s In the Parlor, Helen Frankenthaler’s Tales of the Genji III, James McNeill Whistler’s Yellow House, Lannion, Martin Lewis’ Which Way? and selections from Robert Rauschenberg’s Bellini Series.
