Virgile doit être préféré à Cicéron , sinon tous tous les rapports, du moins parce qu’il a brillé dans tous les genres d’éloquence , tandis que Cicéron n’a excellé que dans un seul. Des quatre genres d’éloquenre et des deux sortes de style. APRÈS ces paroles, Eusèbe se reposa un moment. Tous les assistants, d’un accord unanime, déclarèrent que Virgile devait être estimé autant comme orateur que comme poëte , lui qui se faisait remarquer par une si grande science de la parole et par un resPect si scru- puleux des principes de l’art oratoire. Alors Avienus , s’adressant à Eusèbe : Je voudrais sa- voir de vous , mon cher maître , dit-il , tout en vous accor- dant naturellement que Virgile est orateur, s’il y aurait , pour celui qui voudrait étudier l’art de la parole , plus de profit à retirer de Virgile que de Cicéron. le vois , dit Eusèbe , ce que vous voulez faire, ou vous allez , ou vous vous efforcez de m’entraîner, c’est-à-dire la où je voudrais le moins arriver, à la comparaison de Virgile et de Cicéron. Vous m’avez demandé habilement lequel des deux l’emportait, parce que celui-là serané- cessairement le plus utile qui l’emportera sur l’autre. Mais dispensez-moi , je vous prie, de cette tache si difficile et si épineuse , car il ne nous appartient pas de juger entre deux adversaires pareils d’aussi grands procès. V. 9 pour l’une , soit pour l’autre des deux parties. J’oserai dire seulement que l’éloquence du poète de Mantoue est variée , qu’elle prend toutes les formes, et qu’elle em- brasse l’art tout entier de la parole. Voyez cependant dans votre Cicéron; c’est un seul genre d’éloquence , mais comme il est abondant , entraînant et riche ! Chaque orateur a une nature à lui, nature composée et multiple. Celui-ci a un style qui coule et déborde; celui-là, au contraire, a l’habitude de s’exprimer avec brièveté et con- cision. L’un . exact et sobre, affectionne une sorte de frugalité oratoire; l’autre porte jusqu’à la licence l’élo- queuce plantureuse, éclatante et fleurie. Au milieu d’une si grande dissemblance entre tous ces orateurs, on ne trouve absolument que Virgile dont la veine se soit allu- mée à tous les genres d’éloquence. Je voudrais , répondit Avienus , que vous me montras- siez plus évidemment ces différences par des exemples tirés des auteurs. Il y a , dit Eusèbe , quatre genres d’éloquence : le genre abondant , dans lequel Cicéron est le maître; le genre concis , dans lequel Salluste est au premier rang ; le genre froid, qui est celui de Fronton; le genre luxuriant et fleuri, qui était autrefois le triomphe de Pline Second , et dans lequel maintenant notre Symmaque ne le cède à aucun des anciens. Mais c’est chez Virgile seul que vous retrouverez ces quatre genres. Voulez-vous l’entendre parler avec tant de brièveté , que la brièveté elle-même ne peut être ni plus resserrée ni plus condensée? a Et les champs où fut Troie. n Voilà comment , dans le moins de paroles possible , Virgile absorbe et fait disparaître l’une des plus grandes villes du monde.     The Poet and His Readers: The Social and Poetic Matrix of Garcilaso de la Vega Casey Robert Eriksen Charlottesville, Virginia MA, University of Virginia, 2012 BA, The College of New Jersey, 2010 A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese University of Virginia April 2016 Eriksen ii Abstract This dissertation examines the social and literary matrix of Garcilaso’s poetry, and, by extension, the forces of canonization that shape and efface poets and poetic works over time. The study explores the circulation and diffusion of Garcilaso’s corpus in humanist circles. The material manipulation of Garcilaso’s poetry has affected reception in significant ways. The presence of numerous editorial hands in the initial compilation and organization of Garcilaso’s work speaks to the ways in which scholars received and commented on the poet in subsequent editions. An attention to material circumstances, including manuscript circulation and published editions, likewise provides insight into early literary histories of Garcilaso from a material perspective. Chapter three formulates an Ovidian analysis of the “Ode ad florem Gnidi,” the Second Elegy, and several Sonnets to outline a new reading on Garcilaso’s engagement with Latin models and humanistic culture at large. The rediscovery of these influences— particularly in the case of the “Ode ad florem Gnidi”—situates the poet within a broader Renaissance world of Ovidian rewriting. Through the interplay of classical models and cancionero tropes, Garcilaso invokes the ambiguous possibilities of euphemism and double-entendre as he draws upon a shared heritage of lexical play and ambiguity.

    31 DOI:10.34616/QO.2019.4.31.54 Quaestiones Oralitatis IV (2018/2019) Isabella Nova Università Cattolica di Milano [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0002-7880-4856 HOMERIC CATALOGUES BETWEEN TRADITION AND INVENTION Abstract This contribution aims at showing how a traditional list of names could be varied by poets with the addition of new ones sharing the same features, with a special focus on the Nereids’ names. A compari- son between the catalogue of Nereids in the Iliad (XVIII 39–49) and the one in the Theogony (Theog. 243–264) shows that whilst some names are traditional and some others seem to be invented ad hoc, they all convey relaxing images (sea, nature, beauty, or gifts for sailors). This list of names did not become a fixed one in later times either: inscriptions on vase-paintings of the 5th century preserve names different than the epic ones. Even Apollodorus (I 2, 7) gives a catalogue of Nereids derived partly from the Iliad and partly from the Theogony, with the addition of some names belonging to another group of deities (the Oceanids) and other forms unattested elsewhere but with the same features of the epic ones. A further comparison between a catalogue of Nymphs in the Georgics (IV 333–356) and its reception in the work of Higynus proves that adding new names to a traditional list is a feature not only of oral epic poetry, but also of catalogues composed in a literate culture. CAN offer no apology for this attempt to render the Georgics of Vergil into English verse other I 1 than mj own great love of the poem, and the venturesome hope of heing able to impart a portion of the pleasure which it gives me to some few of the many who are unlikely to read it in the original. Of the best known of the Latin poets, the Georgics is the least known work : yet it is, in some respects, the most finished and symmetrical, and we have reason to believe that it came nearer than any other to satisfying the poet's own fastidious standard of excellence. It is also, or so it seems to me, the most characteristic of the man. Acontius, Milanion, and Gallus: Vergil, Ecl. 10.52-61 Abstract In the rambling sequence of thoughts in Ecl. 10.31-69 that expresses the troubled state of the lovesick Gallus, Vergil depicts his friend as proposing to abandon elegy for bucolic poetry, and to take up a pair of activities presumably related to this change. These activities--carving love-messages on trees and hunting--are to some extent typical of the unrequited literary, especially pastoral, lover. But these projects may have more than just a general amatory import. It has long been held that both motifs had previously appeared in Gallus' own love poetry. More recently, D. 0. Ross has refined this theory, arguing that Gallus in his Amores had not merely used these general motifs, but had in fact adduced specific ts ories in which they appear as exempla to characterize his own amatory/literary situation. According to Ross, Vergil is alluding here to two passages in which Gallus had identified himself with two famous lovers of literary myth, namely Acontius and Milanion.

    Classic Poetry Series Virgil - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Virgil(70-19 BCE) Legend has it that Virgil was born in the village of Andes, near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul. Scholars suggest Etruscan, Umbrian or even Celtic descent by examining the linguistic or ethnic markers of the region. Analysis of his name has led to beliefs that he descended from earlier Roman colonists. Modern speculation ultimately is not supported by narrative evidence either from his own writings or his later biographers. Etymological fancy has noted that his cognomen MARO shares its letters anagrammatically with the twin themes of his epic: AMOR (love) and ROMA (Rome). Legend also has it that Virgil received his first education when he was 5 years old and that he later went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy; also that in this period, while in the school of Siro the Epicurean, he began to write poetry. A group of small works attributed to the youthful Virgil survive, but are largely considered spurious. One, the Catalepton, consists of fourteen short poems, some of which may be Virgil's, and another, a short narrative poem titled the Culex ("The Gnat"), was attributed to Virgil as early as the 1st century CE. These dubious poems are sometimes referred to as the Appendix Vergiliana. During the civil strife that killed the Roman Republic, when Julius Caesar had been assassinated in 44 BCE, the army led by his assassins Brutus and Cassius met defeat by Caesar's faction, including his chief lieutenant Mark Antony and his newly adopted son Octavian Caesar in 42 BCE in Greece near Philippi.
