Master of Arts (Art History), August 1996, 101 pp., 26 illustrations, references, 138 titles. This thesis examines the imagery of Jose Guadalupe Posada in the context of the Mexican Revolution with particular reference to the corrido as a major manifestation of Mexican culture. Particular emphasis is given to three corridos: "La Cucaracha," "La Valentina," and "La Adelita." An investigation of Posada's background, style, and technique places him in the tradition of Mexican art. Using examples of works by Posada which illustrate Mexico's history, culture, and politics, this thesis puts Posada into the climate of the Porfiriato and Revolutionary Mexico. After a brief introduction to the corrido, a stylistic analysis of each image, research into the background of the song and subject matter, and comments on the music draw together the concepts of image, music, and text. Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán Durante El Siglo XX
Jesús Jáuregu i * ETNOMUSI COLOGÍA De la comarca a la fama mundial. Las transformaciones del Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán durante el siglo XX Tecalitlán, ¿la tierra del mejor mariachi del mundo? l 18 de octubre del año 2000, bajo los aus - Epicios del Gobierno del Estado de Jalisco y del Ayuntamiento de Tecalitlán, fue inaugurado el Museo del Mariachi “Silvestre Vargas”. Los aportes de la investigación historiográfica de Jonathan Clark y la asesoría de Ignacio Orozco quedaron sometidos a una perspectiva ideológica y a una intención museográfica correspondiente al mito que sobre el mariachi han creado los medios de co- municación masiva a partir de la década de 1930. Allí se pretende exponer la historia del mariachi fundado en Tecalitlán por Gaspar Vargas (1880- 1969) en 1898, con cuatro músicos (dos violines, guitarra de golpe y arpa grande). La presentación de fichas en las que aparecen citas de entrevistas con mariacheros informantes le otorga vida a importantes objetos, discos y fotografías. En la actualidad este museo no está aislado de la atmósfera que se advierte en Tecalitlán. Desde la entrada al pueblo el visitante es recibido con un letrero en el que se proclama: “Bienvenidos a la tierra del mejor mariachi del mundo”. Asimismo, en la plaza hay una estatua de Silvestre Vargas, en cuya placa se lee: “Tequila Sauza rinde homenaje a D. Silves- tre Vargas, director del Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, por sus méritos en la difusión de la música jalisciense a través de los cinco continentes. A FEW WORDS ON HOW TO PROMOTE MARIACHI SOL DE MEXICO AT PAC’S by Jose Delgado I have been managing the mariachi genre in the U.S. for 20 years. I began as a tour manager for Linda Ronstadt’s CANCIONES DE MI PADRE tour. The show was a unique blend of Mexican music and mariachi concert. Following that I managed Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano for over fifteen years and with Mr. Cano refocused the company to be a concert mariachi that toured playing in performing art centers as well as concert halls as diverse as Chicago Symphony Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, Centennial Hall and Teatro de Gollado in Guadalajara. Currently, I am the manager of the internationally recognized, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez. Based on these expansive experiences in the American mariachi field, I have discovered a number of ways to engage and enhance local efforts to promote Sol de Mexico in performing arts centers wherever they might be presented. First and foremost Sol de Mexico should be promoted to a mainstream audience as World Music. This will capture music aficionados and mainstream middle class Mexican-Americans as well as other segments of the local Latino community. The Mexican American audience will view this as an acceptance and respect for their cultural tradition and an acknowledgement of the genre as an art form, which it is. A PAC that has an established history in their local community and is already branded but has never presented anything Latino in their season will have a different kind of a challenge than a PAC that is just opening their doors. -

Immo pectore.* Apostillas a El mariachi Jesús Jáuregui EL PARTEAGUAS l año de 1981 fue decisivo para que tomara la determinación de in Evestigar el mariachi, en mi calidad de antropólogo. Hacía seis años que un campesino octogenario –Margarito Murillo Ibarra (18901986)–, en la costa de Nayarit, me había hecho comprender de manera inesperada y vivencial la importancia de la tradición del mariachi dentro del complejo cultural de la gente del occidente de México (Jáuregui, 2001: 46 y 2007: 1217). En octubre de ese año, leí con sorpresa y fascinación el artículo de Jean Meyer en la revista Vuelta sobre “El origen del mariachi”. Lo más destacado de su contribución era la carta, fechada el 7 de mayo de 1852 en la parro quia de Rosamorada, que el cura Cosme Santa Anna (18251892) le había enviado a la autoridad eclesiástica de Guadalajara. En dicho documento presentaba con detalle su versión sobre “los hechos que han ocurrido en este lugar y que han ocasionado diferencias mías para con las autoridades de esta mi feligresía y que han instruido queja al Supremo Gobierno del Estado” (ápud Meyer, 1981: 41). El presente trabajo busca enmarcar y describir la propuesta artística que presentaré en mi concierto final de Maestría en Canto Popular en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, y espero que sea solo el primer paso para seguir profundizando en el estudio teórico, práctico y pedagógico de este tipo de Canto. 1. CONSIDERACIONES IMPORTANTES Debido a que el término canto popular abarca un panorama muy amplio y diverso, voy a empezar por diferenciar claramente el significado del término o expresión “música popular” en inglés y en español, tal como lo hace Carolina Santamaría ( 2007): …la expresión “música popular”, difiere radicalmente del sentido que tiene en inglés el término popular music normalizado por la academia anglosajona. Popular music indica siempre una música mediatizada y masiva que es producto de las industrias culturales y que tiene una distribución y un consumo a gran escala. -

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -
