  • “Heart Like a Wheel”—Linda Ronstadt (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Heart Like a Wheel”—Linda Ronstadt (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label Peter Asher Linda Ronstadt’s 1974 album “Heart Like a Wheel” was her fifth as a solo artist. And though she had previously enjoyed some chart success with the group The Stone Poneys (their recording of “Different Drum” was a hit in 1967) and achieved some success as a solo artist in 1970 with the song “Long Long Time,” “Heart Like a Wheel” is considered her breakthrough album and, to some, her career masterwork. Considering Ronstadt’s “Heart” success, musically and commercially, it is not surprising that it was this album that also marked the first time Ronstadt had an entire album steered by music producer extraordinaire Peter Asher. Asher, a former performer (he was the Peter in Peter & Gordon), began managing and producing other performers in late 1960s. One of his first clients was a young troubadour named James Taylor. In the early ‘70s, after an introduction by Taylor’s sister, Kate, Asher began managing and producing Linda Ronstadt. Once joined up with Ronstadt, Asher and the California-based singer soon became something of a dynamic duo. “Heart” marked the beginning of a long and extraordinarily successful collaboration; every subsequent album Ronstadt would ever record with Asher—all 13 of them-- would eventually be certified either gold or platinum. Since her debut on vinyl with the Stone Poneys and as a solo act via her early albums “Hand Sown…Home Grown” (1969), “Silk Purse” (1970) and “Linda Ronstadt” (1972), Ronstadt had been working steadily in pushing the country genre toward the pop mainstream.

Master of Arts (Art History), August 1996, 101 pp., 26 illustrations, references, 138 titles. This thesis examines the imagery of Jose Guadalupe Posada in the context of the Mexican Revolution with particular reference to the corrido as a major manifestation of Mexican culture. Particular emphasis is given to three corridos: "La Cucaracha," "La Valentina," and "La Adelita." An investigation of Posada's background, style, and technique places him in the tradition of Mexican art. Using examples of works by Posada which illustrate Mexico's history, culture, and politics, this thesis puts Posada into the climate of the Porfiriato and Revolutionary Mexico. After a brief introduction to the corrido, a stylistic analysis of each image, research into the background of the song and subject matter, and comments on the music draw together the concepts of image, music, and text. • Linda by Diana Burbano
Label Me Latina/o Fall 2018 Volume VIII 1 Linda By Diana Burbano A super badass story of finding your inner hero. A long monologue for a Chicana. CAST: La Linda: A Chicana woman. TIME: Now. A cute Los Angeles bungalow. A woman comes out the front door carrying a box. She is singing "Los Laureles" from Linda Ronstadt’s “Canciones de Mi Padre.” She ends with a loud Mariachi cry. She stops, listening. Laughs. LA LINDA: If mi abuelita was still here, she would’ve answered back just as loud, and we would’ve danced around the kitchen, using cucharas for castanets until mi papa would yell at us to quit with the tonterias and get him a chela. She sighs. You can’t go home again, que no? But what can you do? This old neighborhood is getting so gentrified! The local paletero is some twenty-year-old white with wax in his mustache. Indicating the box. I’m glad I did an idiot check. I found this stuffed in the closet of mi ’ita’s old room. She sets down the box, which is labeled "Mi Linda." She opens it. Takes out Linda Ronstadt’s “Living in the USA” record. Look at this! Makin’ the vinyl-lovin’ hipsters jealous. I wanted to BE Linda Ronstadt. For such a tiny little thing, Linda had such a big sound! I LOVED her god-so-beautiful voice and her cheesy, sexy look. I remember wearing the tube socks and short shorts. Pulls a pair of roller skates out of the box.

  • Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán Durante El Siglo XX

  • A Few Words on How to Promote Sol De Mexico At
A FEW WORDS ON HOW TO PROMOTE MARIACHI SOL DE MEXICO AT PAC’S by Jose Delgado I have been managing the mariachi genre in the U.S. for 20 years. I began as a tour manager for Linda Ronstadt’s CANCIONES DE MI PADRE tour. The show was a unique blend of Mexican music and mariachi concert. Following that I managed Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano for over fifteen years and with Mr. Cano refocused the company to be a concert mariachi that toured playing in performing art centers as well as concert halls as diverse as Chicago Symphony Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, Centennial Hall and Teatro de Gollado in Guadalajara. Currently, I am the manager of the internationally recognized, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez. Based on these expansive experiences in the American mariachi field, I have discovered a number of ways to engage and enhance local efforts to promote Sol de Mexico in performing arts centers wherever they might be presented. First and foremost Sol de Mexico should be promoted to a mainstream audience as World Music. This will capture music aficionados and mainstream middle class Mexican-Americans as well as other segments of the local Latino community. The Mexican American audience will view this as an acceptance and respect for their cultural tradition and an acknowledgement of the genre as an art form, which it is. A PAC that has an established history in their local community and is already branded but has never presented anything Latino in their season will have a different kind of a challenge than a PAC that is just opening their doors.

  • Jesús Jáuregui. Immo Pectore. Apostillas a El Mariachi

This class will cover the historically significant country-rock movement which started in LA in 1965 and spread across the country, changing the musical landscape of popular music. This interview with LINDA RONSTADT was conducted by the Library of Congress on July 29, 2015. LOC: Of all your albums, what stands out most, to you, regarding “Heart Like a Wheel”? I’m the last person to know; it was such a long time ago and I never listen to my old records. I always liked that song [“Heart Like a Wheel”] rather than the more trendy or commercial stuff. I wanted to record it for years. But everyone said it was “not commercial, forget it, it’s too corny.” [But] it’s an art song, a true American art song. I really wanted to do it on piano and cello and I finally met the person who wanted to produce it- -Peter Asher. We debuted it at our Carnegie Hall concert. We were rehearsing the night before and my piano player, Andrew Gold, knew the song. And I said, “Let’s put that in the show tomorrow night.” We did and the audience LOVED it. That convinced Peter…. Serendipity. LOC: This was the first time you worked with Peter Asher for a full album, what did he bring to the process that was missing before? He’s such a solid craftsman. He really knows not to go into a muddle. He knew how to steer the artist and the musicians. He was really good at taking the best bits of the ideas and discovering how they go together to make a clear story. He’s organized, thoughtful. Clarity is what counts. If you can make it clear…. If you can make it clear then it can be funny or sad but if you try to make it funny or sad or whatever, then it’s not.
