Our writers We support each playwright’s full creative development and nurture their unique voice, resulting in a heterogeneous mix of as many styles as there are artists. Our productions We share the stories of today by the writers of tomorrow. These intrepid, diverse artists develop plays and musicals that are relevant, intelligent, and boundary-pushing. That’s why we offer affordably priced tickets to every performance to young people and others, and provide engaging content — both onsite and online — to delight and inspire new play lovers in NYC, around the country, and throughout the world. Our process We meet the individual needs of each writer in order to develop their work further. Our New Works Lab produces readings and workshops to cultivate our artists’ new projects. Through our robust commissioning program and open script submission policy, we identify and cultivate the most exciting American talent and help bring their unique vision to life. CHAPTER FOURTEEN: “SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT”: HIP-HOP, “ALTERNATIVE” MUSIC, AND THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS Lecture Outlines Lecture 1: Hip-Hop and Techno I. Hip-Hop Breaks Out (1980s–1990s) A. In the mid-1980s, rap moved into the popular mainstream. B. 1986 saw the release of the first two multiplatinum rap albums: 1. Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C. a) Number Three on Billboard’s pop albums chart b) Over three million copies sold 2. Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys a) Number One for seven weeks b) Over seven million copies sold 3. Expansion of the audience for hip-hop music was the key to the commercial success of these albums. a) Included millions of young white fans, attracted by the rebelliousness of the genre C. Both Raising Hell and Licensed to Ill were released on a new independent label called Def Jam. BEATS OF YOUR TOWN On the eve of the release of their new album ‘Ocean’s Apart’, Grant McLennan, co-leader of watershed Brisbane pop group, The Go-Betweens, takes the time to grant Robiter an interview. Matthew ‘The Rock Lobbster’ Lobb reports The Clowns Come To Town – Film School Rejections and UQ Librarians Long before Queensland art tangled at a pretty summit with pop music (the years prior to LP wonderworks such as Before Hollywood, Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express and 16 Lovers Lane) , one Grant McLennan had been knocked back from film and television school on account of his 16 years. Enrolment in an arts program at the University of Queensland came, therefore, as a sort of edifying compromise. Once at St. Lucia, the undergraduate - a brainy eldest child from rural Queensland - befriended a gracefully mincing eccentric named Robert Forster who played guitar and wrote his own songs. The two bonded over shared tastes in skewered pop culture and spent a lot of time at the Humanities library reading, in import copies of The Village Voice, about emerging bands like Television and Talking Heads.
