GPU’s by Siyi Yang A GPU is a graphical processing unit that displays images on your screen. The GPU might also do computing, but that would be a whole other talk. Sometimes, the GPU might be integrated onto the CPU, look out for that if you do not care about gaming and want to save a few hundred dollars. A network card is usually a card that handles the network function for the computer. Things like handling TCP/IP and sending them via Ethernet. It is usually integrated onto the motherboard, but as the requirements for faster internet go up, one might need it someday. Then there would be the ram module. Usually, ram operates on ddr4 or lpddr4. RAM is important to the computer just like short term memory is to your brain. Without short term memory, it would be hard to get around the world. Without ram, a CPU would need to connect directly to storage, which is very slow. However, if there is a problem with the power, the information stored in the RAM could be lost easily; the same could be said of human short term memory: if one gets hit in the head, they would most likely forget most of the things that happened before and during being hit. I suggest reading more documents on how it will affect games.

Different Robotics Competitions by Jeremy Chen There are two main robotics contests which held every year. First one is the First robotics. There are 4 levels of contests, First Lego League Jr. (FLL Jr.), First Lego League (FLL), First Tech Challenge (FTC), and First Robotics Competition (FRC). The FLL Jr. and FLL are for elementary school to middle school students, although college students can also compete for it. The goal of FLL and FLL Jr. are using Lego made robots to solve problems and inspire people. FTC is for improving STEM skills, showing team work, being innovative, and practicing engineering principles. It mainly focuses on secondary school students. FRC, as the hardest one, requires skills and knowledge to operate and build a robot in limited time and resources. This makes students to think and to cooperate. Usually this is for college students as they have enough skills and have their own thoughts. Second is VEX robotics. There are two levels: Vex IQ challenge and Vex competition. Vex IQ covers elementary to middle school students, while Vex competition covers from secondary schools to college. They have the similar aspects as First robotics but they require more skills for controlling than coding.

Editorial: State of

The Media Where Has Objective Reporting Gone? by Mr. Brown

Is anybody old enough to remember news reporting in the 1970’s? If so, you likely remember broadcasters who came on air and presented the news

using neutral language. In other words, they merely told us what was

happening not how we should think or react to what was happening. This article isn’t intended to promote any one news outlet over another; rather, to point out how biased reporting itself has come to be in the media. You don’t have to listen too long to determine broadcaster’s and stations’ opinions about a topic. In fact, some broadcasts are replete with opinion-based language like: “absurd,” “ridiculous”, “lunacy”, etc. I read an article recently

in MUO stating that in 1983 fifty companies owned 90% of the U.S. media

market. In 2011, that number was down to just 6. Now, we’re at 5. Why? Media companies have made enormous financial deals and merged into corporate media giants. The result of these multi-billion dollar deals has translated into concentrated ownership of media outlets into an ever decreasing number of conglomerates. What does this mean for us and how we receive the news? It means that the dissemination of information is controlled by a few; corporate giants. This in itself doesn’t mean that these corporate giants have nefarious intentions when it comes to presenting the news, but we would be foolish to think that the few writing the paychecks

for those reporting the news don’t hold some sway over what gets reported

and how it gets reported. Furthermore, media corporate owners contribute significant campaign contributions to their favored candidates during each U.S. presidential election. This sets up a media system in which it may not be in the best interest of a news corporation to report news objectively or in a way that might damage its candidate and thereby itself. Talk about the

need for campaign finance reform. But, that may be a discussion for another

day. Take a look at some of today’s headlines I came across when searching on different sites: “Donald Trump Just Pushed Rudy Giuliani Under the Bus”, “Pelosi Needs to Apologize to Nation,” “Marco Rubio’s Dramatic Fall From Grace,” “YouTube Censors Silence news They Don’t Want to Hear,” “Trump Absurdly Claims Pence Can Stop the Steal at Ceremonial Electoral College Count,” etc. Whether you personally agree with any of this is irrelevant. The point is that the language used in the above headlines is highly biased. We may not have the power to stop biased reporting in the media but we can at least notice it when it occurs. Even if a particular news

organization supports your views, do you really want it to tell you how you should think and feel? Think about it. Page 7 Global Gazette Hillside School Diversity

The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer is the name of an unidentified mastermind serial killer

that stalked and terrorized the San Francisco Bay area in the late 60’s and early 70’s. There are five known victims but many theorize that the Zodiac could have killed over fifty people. His M.O. was to dress up in an elaborate costume and either shoot or stab helpless victims. He is renowned for having a monotone emotionless voice and, after some murders, calling

9-1-1 dispatch to take claim for the killings. He tended to target young

lovers but also murdered a taxi driver. In the taxi driver case (Paul Stine), he was seen by young people in the adjacent balcony who described him as a white, heavyset man with rimmed glasses and a crew cut. When the police received the information from the dispatch, the dispatcher had transferred the information that had the patrolmen looking for a “black man.” This error was costly as it likely fed into the prejudices of the day and allowed the real killer (who was apparently spotted) to slip through the police drag net. The Zodiac later taunted the police by claiming to have a conversation with one of the officers shortly after the Stine murder. Had the dispatcher gotten the description correct, the Zodiac would have likely been caught then and there. He wasn’t! Another thing that the Zodiac was famous for was taunting the police with a series of letters that included four very difficult to solve cryptograms. The first of the cryptograms that the Zodiac sent was his longest. It is called the Z 408 because it is 408 characters long. It was solved about a week after it was sent into The San

Francisco Herald. A North Salinas schoolteacher and his wife Betty solved

the code. However, the other three cryptograms took much longer. In fact, the 340 was just solved in 2020. It did not, however, contain the identity of the killer as hoped for. Yet, there is still the Z13 and Z32 which remain unsolved and authorities are hoping that the answer to the mystery lies in one of them. The Z13 is purportedly short and some believe that if decoded, may contain the Zodiac’s name. At this point in time, he’s likely dead. He would be close to ninety years old if witness descriptions in the early 70’s are correct. The motivation for his murders seemed to be threefold: 1) to instill fear in the San Francisco Bay Area, 2) to demonstrate his intelligence to the authorities, and 3) to pursue thrill kills. With the advent of genealogical DNA profiling, this unsolved case may have another avenue in which it can be solved. Police claim that the Zodiac left small amounts of DNA on licked stamps sent to the press. If extracted and experts are able to create a DNA profile, the Zodiac mystery may finally come to an end. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Halvah is a traditional Israeli and Middle Eastern semi-sweet

treat that is flour and nut based. The word “halvah” comes from Arabic and literally translates to “sweetness.” It is made with tahini (sesame seed paste), sugar, spices, and nuts. It has a nutty flavor and a crumbly, fluffy texture. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting halva, you would likely describe it as deliciously unique. In Israel, halva typically comes in slabs or small packages. It is available in a wide variety of flavors that include vanilla or chocolate. Halvah is often served at Israeli hotels as a breakfast component. Thinking of expanding your gastronomic repertoire? Give halvah a try. You won’t regret it! Halvah

The vegetables in this tasty Cambodian delicacy include green papaya, green banana, pumpkin, eggplant, chili leaf, just to name some.
