Sociology Career Path

A graduate from Bucknell’s Sociology program, Ms. Laurie B. Marston used her degree to start her own urban planning consulting company. Ms. Marston says that not only was graduate school important in her career, but networking was extremely important, as she gained a lot of business through contacts, organizations, etc. She says that internships were also an important experience in her career development. During a typical day, she will attend various meetings with clients, public hearings and evening meetings. While working with communities that don’t accept the projects designed to enhance the community is frustrating, she enjoys working on a variety of different projects, going to different places, and meeting different people. Ms. Marston recommends her field to anyone who enjoys working with people, is good at problem solving and is patient in seeing results. If given the chance to do it all over again, she says she would do it exactly the same way, as she loves what she is doing.
