Since 2014, Reed’s interview was expanded to take into account the presidency of Donald Trump. The title of this interview was supplied by this publication. Ishmael Reed (b. 1938) is the winner of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (genius award), the renowned L.A. Times Robert Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the National Institute for Arts and Letters. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer and finalist for two National Book Awards and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley (a thirty-five year presence); he has also taught at Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.

    ® 2019-2020 Season Overview JULY 2020 Report Summary The following is a report on the gender distribution of choreographers whose works were presented in the 2019-2020 seasons of the fifty largest ballet companies in the United States. Dance Data Project® separates metrics into subsections based on program, length of works (full-length, mixed bill), stage (main stage, non-main stage), company type (main company, second company), and premiere (non-premiere, world premiere). The final section of the report compares gender distributions from the 2018- 2019 Season Overview to the present findings. Sources, limitations, and company are detailed at the end of the report. Introduction The report contains three sections. Section I details the total distribution of male and female choreographic works for the 2019-2020 (or equivalent) season. It also discusses gender distribution within programs, defined as productions made up of full-length or mixed bill works, and within stage and company types. Section II examines the distribution of male and female-choreographed world premieres for the 2019-2020 season, as well as main stage and non-main stage world premieres. More recently, the Committee briefly addressed the issue of whether a Request for Evaluation (“RFE”) of the Arch could be submitted to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (“LPC”), and Committee members Osi Kaminer and Vivian Ducat arranged for Mr. Thompson to discuss the Arch’s history at this Committee meeting. a. No one tends offhand to associate gamelan with MIT. but there it is. Professor Evan Ziporyn has been directing the gong kebyar ensemble Gamelan Galak Tika at MIT since 1993, and I was an active member from 1994 until 1997. Unfortunately the pressure of my studies at Wesleyan has not allowed me to play with Galak Tika as much as I would like in the past few years. For the three years of my tenure with Galak Tika we were blessed with the artistry of the Balinese husband and wife team of I Nyoman Catra and Desak Made Suarti Laksmi. The magnificent teaching and performance prowess of Evan, Catra and Desak formed the basis of my introduction to gamelan music. In 1997 I came to Wesleyan University to study for the degree of Master of Arts in Music, of which this thesis is a part. Here at Wesleyan I have had the great honor of studying with I. M. Harjito and Sumarsam, two Javanese artists. I sincerely thank them for broadening my awareness of the multifaceted natures of Indonesian music and for sharing with me the great beauty of the central Javanese court gamelan.

Could there really be more to Count Dracula than those Halloween clichés? Yes, says Ballet Nebraska in Dracula, its season-opening performance at 8 pm October 28 at Omaha's Orpheum Theater. The ballet portrays the vampire count as both a monster and as a man with emotions and vulnerabilities, choreographer Winthrop Corey said. Corey, artistic director of Alabama's Mobile Ballet, said he began the creative process by reading both Bram Stoker's classic 1897 horror novel and scholars' commentaries about it. His research raised a question in his mind: What made Dracula who he was? "Bram Stoker never told us how Dracula got to be a vampire," he said. "I say that he is a man who, through circumstances we don't know, is turned into a monster. Yet he is still a man inside this monster's body, who can kill, but who can also fall in love. And therein lies the ballet; I designed it around that." To develop the choreography, Corey said, he started with the relationship between Count Dracula and the novel's two key female characters: the flirtatious Lucy and her more insightful best friend, Mina. "What I did was narrow it down to three characters -- Lucy, Mina and Dracula -- and the difference between his relationship with Lucy and his relationship with Mina," he said. "One of them he kills and makes a vampire bride; the other one he actually falls in love with.

    BENNINGTON COLLEGE BULLETIN at Bennington College Summer 1935 · BENNINGTON COLLEGE BULLETIN ISSUED QUARTERLY AT BENNINGTON, VERMONT Volume Three :: February 1935 ::Number Three The Bennington School a/ the Dance The Bennington School of the Dance, established in the summer of 1934 as a center for the study of the modern dance in America, will hold its second session at Bennington College, Bennington, Ver- mont, from July 5 through August 17, 1935. The School, organized and conducted as an autonomous division of Bennington College, represents a plan for the integrated study of the modern dance. The plan is based upon the belief that the modern dance is made up of a number of distinct expressions, each independent and significant in itself, which together constitute the contemporary form of the art. Therefore, for the student of the modern dance, a well founded individual point of view and sound critical judgment of his own and other's work must rest upon a comprehensive understanding of all of the influences shaping the development of the dance today. The work of the School comprises an impartial analysis of those approaches to the technique and choreography of the modern dance best established in this country. It includes a survey of the historical background of the dance and a critical interpretation of modernism in the dance. It relates to the dance those aspects of music and of the theatre arts which are indispensable to an under- standing of the whole structure of the art. The organization of work allows for differences of emphasis, thus making it possible to unite in one group, with the consequent desirable interchanges, students of a variety of interests and abilities.
