BrazilFoundation Commemorates its 10th Gala in

To celebrate nearly a decade-long tradition of the event, the foundation examines the past and looks toward the future during a dinner benefit on September 19th at the American Museum of Natural History.

New York – It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the tenth edition of the BrazilFoundation Gala, that will be on September 19th at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Almost ten years after the first Annual Gala in 2003, we have surpassed 7 thousand supporters, who are responsible for raising close to $18 million dollars and supporting more than 300 social initiatives in 26 Brazilian states.

“There were many challenges BrazilFoundation faced in opening new avenues to philanthropy. The most important was to earn the confidence of the individuals, companies, and civil society organizations that transform into volunteers, donors, and partnerships. There is an immense pride in seeing the foundation name become known for its work that translates into support for the social entrepreneurs spread throughout various Brazilian states”, comments the President and Founder Leona Forman.

To mark the special date, BrazilFoundation will honor one of the visionaries of the event with Leona: psychologist Malu Millerman. A native of São Paulo, she has lived in New York since 1993, when her husband Sergio Millerman received a job offer to live in the city. “It has been a pleasure to be a part of the great success that the Gala has reached and to further the great mission of supporting social projects in ”, she says.

Other honorees during the event will include André Brandão, President of HSBC Brasil for his work on Instituto HSBC Solidariedade, that finances socio-environmental projects; and Manuel de Andrade, founder of Programa de Educação em Células Cooperativas (PRECE), created to help prepare youth to enter college. The organization has already sent more than 500 youth from Ceará to institutes of higher education and has received support from BrazilFoundation since 2003.

Who will also be present to receive a special honor and International Philanthropy Award is the business man Arpad A. Busson. Born in France and rooted in England, he is the Founder and President of ARK (Absolute Return for Kids), a philanthropic association that finances projects to help children in miserable situations or who are victims of abuse in Eastern Europe, South Africa and Great Britain. Busson is also married to the Uma Thurman.

The Luciana Curtis and Luigi Tadini jointly serve as Masters of Ceremony. The two also have an important role within the foundation – Luciana was one of the first models in New York to support the Gala, while Tadini, Commercial Director of Paper Magazine, helped organize the very first Gala Miami, this year, as well as the After Party of the two previous Galas in New York.

Besides the tables and invitations, BrazilFoundation will receive the support and donations of the guests present to leverage the total amount to be raised. And, as expected in benefit events, there will be an auction of donated items from partners that will further increase the donation value raised and will be distributed between the institutions to be selected and analyzed by the foundation selection committee. Along with the other confirmed auction items is jewelry from Brazilian designer Jack Vartanian, designed exclusively for the event, and artwork from the Mark Engel and Brendan Murphy.

Responsible for the event’s musical arrangements, Michaelangelo L’Acqua, who has worked with Tom Ford and the W Hotel group, will perform for the guests the best current international music. Along with him, the similarly Rob Garza, of Thievery Corporation, Nikko Gibler and Julio Mario Santo Domingo promise to enliven the after- party, to be held in the halls of the American Museum of Natural History.
