Il segretario del PCI Alessandro Natta viene colpito da un lieve infarto mentre partecipa ad un evento politico a Gubbio, tuttavia una rapida visita ospedaliera rassicura sulle sue condizioni. Nel Partito c’era chi avrebbe voluto approfittare dell’infarto per sostituire Natta con un segretario più giovane, tuttavia il fatto che le condizioni di salute del segretario fossero tutt’altro che critiche, fece rapidamente tramontare questa possibilità. Natta, berlingueriano di ferro e continuista del marxismo, era infatti inviso ad una parte del Partito che voleva rinnovare il PCI e ricucire lo strappo col PSI. La questione era percepita come di urgente risoluzione, in particolare da coloro che temevano un sorpasso del PSI craxiano sui comunisti. Tuttavia, Natta aveva sempre seccamente respinto ogni richiesta di cambio nel nome del Partito, e i contrasti con Occhetto su questo punto avevano portato al suo allontanamento dalla segreteria. Il buon risultato del PCI alle europee del 1989, il 27,6%, ossia un punto in più rispetto alle politiche del 1987, ridiede fiato alla segreteria di Natta, che poteva argomentare come non ci fosse un crollo nei consensi tale da giustificare un radicale cambio di direzione. Però i fatti dell’autunno 1989, il crollo del Muro di Berlino e dei regimi comunisti nell’Europa Orientale, riaccesero il dibattito, ma Natta tenne duro: “I partiti dell’Europa Orientale si sono identificati col potere dello stato, sono stati il partito unico al governo, hanno fondato e gestito dei regimi. Noi non siamo mai stati né un partito di regime né un partito di comando, la libertà nel nostro paese non l'abbiamo mai conculcata, l’abbiamo anzi conquistata e difesa.

    INTRODUCTION: THE YEAR BEFORE THE ELECTIONS Mario Caciagli and Alan S. Zuckerman The Jubilee of the Catholic Church is the most frequently men- tioned event in the chronology that precedes this introduction to the sixteenth edition of Politics in Italy. It could not have been oth- erwise, in light of its impact on Italian public life and visibility in the mass media throughout the year 2000. The “first planetary and media jubilee,” as Gianfranco Brunelli terms it in his contribution to this volume, stands at the center of this book’s section on Ital- ian society. Consider only some of the salient events that marked this celebration: May Day, which the trade unions left nearly entirely for the Pope to celebrate; the Gay Pride demonstration and the attendant protests from the Vatican; Haider’s visit; the arrival of tens of millions of pilgrims to the Eternal City, the impressive amount of public works brought to completion in Rome, and the added visibility of Rome’s mayor Francesco Rutelli. In the imagi- nation of most Italians, the year 2000 will remain the Jubilee year. In spite of the Pope’s many meetings with social groups, how- ever, the Jubilee had much less of an impact on the political imag- ination. As a result, Brunelli’s essay concentrates on the external aspects of Jubilee, emphasizing the worldwide attention that the Church gave to the event and its internal aspects, especially the uneasy compromises that emerged within the Church’s different currents and groups as it designed and managed the event. 26 Mario Caciagli and Alan S.

The time period considered was from 1990 to 2014. The Literature Review focused on three main areas of interest. Firstly, it examined the function of rhetoric, as the art of the use of language to persuade, and the evolution of its perception from classical to modern times. Hence, it explored the role of political oratory in democratic systems and the concept of rhetorical situation, in order to illustrate how deliberative rhetoric has evolved due to the changing context of political communication. Finally, it examined the theory of argumentation, which applies to any speech which attempts at persuading, and how the rhetorical strategy of reasoning related to the study of political ideologies. The study adopted a qualitative approach to conduct the research. Specifically, it used the Rhetorical Political Analysis (RPA) as the investigative method to conduct a discourse analysis of a sample of twenty leaders’ speeches at party conferences.
