*Note: All film sound must be captured whether optical, magnetic strip or full-coat magnetic. Any single reel can contain any of all combinations of these sound elements. Where it is not possible to capture all of these elements in one pass of the film reel, the missing sound elements must be captured separately and synchronized before creating the master file.

High Definition Formats

Transferring film sources to High Definition:

Master File Format/Extension: .mov Compression: Apple ProRes (HQ)** Resolution: 1920x1080 , 60i or 60p or 30p acceptable if cannot do 24p Frame Rate: 23.98 fps or 59.94i or 59.94p or 29.97p fps Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Pillar Box (4:3 material fits within the 16:9 frame with black bars on the sides) Field Dominance: None for 24p, 60p or 30p, Upper Field First for 60i Audio: 24-bit 48 kHz mono (16-bit 48 kHz minimum) Audio Levels: Average digital reference level between -12 to -20 dB

Access (created from Master) File Format/Extension: .mp4 Compression: MPEG-4 H.264 Target Bitrate 1.2 Mbps, Maximum Bitrate 2 Mbps Resolution: 640x360 Frame Rate: 29.97 fps Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Field Dominance: None Audio: AAC at 128 kbps 48 kHz

**Note: Other native recording formats for editing systems other than Apple may be used, but should use a comparable data rate to ProRes (HQ). For example, a telecine connected to an AVID system may generate files using the DNxHD . These files should also be converted to ProRes (HQ). See the specs above for transcoding files.
