Copying mini DV tape to DVD

Important things to keep in mind before you begin: ● you will need to provide your own DVD ● dubbing may take a while the original content is captured in real time as it plays ● please do not dub copyrighted material for which you do not own the copyright or for which you have not procured official permission from the copyrightholder. Please refer to Wellesley College’s Copyright Policy or contact Graham Henderson (x3514) if you have any questions.

What you will need:

Check out the following two items at the Knapp Desk.

Dubbing Remote Dubbing Cable (Firewire 4pin / 4pin cable)

Two stations in the Knapp Media Center have the equipment you need to use (Stations 43 & 44):

VHS/DVD player/recorder MiniDV tape player StepbyStep Instructions:

● Take the Dubbing Cable and insert one end ● Insert the other end of the Dubbing Cable into the DV player into the DV In slot in the front of the DVD/VHS player

● Turn on the DV player and insert the DV tape. Use the controls on the DV player to rewind the DV tape or to navigate to the spot where you wish to begin capturing content. Pause the tape.

● Turn on the DVD/VHS player and insert a blank DVD. Push the round DVD button in the front of the DVD/VHS player.

Please refer to this image for a few of the subsequent steps to help you locate buttons.

● Make sure the Extron Switchboard (the black box on top of which the TV sits) is turned on. Press the DVD/VHS button.

● Turn on the TV. The screen should be gray and should have a menu ribbon at the top and bottom. If that’s not what you are seeing, press the button on the TV until you see the grey screen. The top ribbon should read “DV Camera Mode” on the left side. Press the channel navigation buttons in the front of the DVD/VHS player until the right side of the ribbon at the top of the TV screen says Line 2.

● The following two things need to happen in quick succession so read this bulletpoint until the end before beginning the sequence. Push the round OneTouch Dubbing button in the front of the DVD/VHS player (next to the DV In slot) to begin the capturing process. The TV should now be displaying the content you are going to be recording. Hit Play on the DV player to start the content.

TIP: If the content you are capturing is lengthy and you choose to leave the station while it runs through, make sure you come back at least a few minutes before it is due to end so you can stop the recording right away, otherwise you will likely end up recording extra content which you will not be able to get rid of.

● Once the content you wanted to capture runs through to the end, press the Stop button on the DVD/VHS player. The TV screen will say Updating information on the Disk and the screen on the DVD/VHS player will say INF WRITE it may stay like this for a few minutes.

● Once the DVD/VHS screen displays either the time or :: again, grab the Dubbing Remote and press the System Menu button.

● This step is not absolutely necessary, but if you wish to give your DVD a title, use the up and down arrows on the Remote to navigate to Disk Name. Use the arrows to navigate between letters, press Enter to select letters or menu options. Once you’re finished naming your DVD navigate back to the main System Menu screen.

● Once you are ready to finalize your DVD, scroll to Disk Finalize. You will be asked if you’re sure you want to continue, click over to OK and press Enter. The TV screen will flash Processing while the DVD/VHS player screen will read FINALIZE this may take a few minutes.

● Once the TV screen goes blank and the DVD/VHS player displays the time or :: again, your DVD is ready. Eject the DVD.

TIP: It is advisable to test your DVD at this point to see that it works. Plug it into the computer and see if it plays automatically.

● Finishing up ○ Rewind your DV tape ○ Turn off the DV Player, TV and DVD/VHS player/recorder ○ Unplug the Dubbing Cable ○ Bring both the Dubbing Remote and Cable back to the worker at the Knapp Desk
