Powell, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Steven Conn, Adviser Professor Paula Baker Professor David Steigerwald _____________________ Adviser Professor George Cotkin History Graduate Program Copyright by Jason Powell 2008 ABSTRACT Through the life and works of novelist John Dos Passos this project reexamines the inter-war cultural phenomenon that we call the Lost Generation. The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The

    DOI: 10.19195/2082-8322.11.1 Duilio Caocci ORCID: 0000-0001-5432-3137 University of Cagliari Free to choose: Female characters in the stories of Grazia Deledda The last quarter of the 19th century witnessed the phenomenon of the great par- ticipation of women in the Italian press. Due to the process of unification, Italy is now perceived as an emerging single market in which linguistic uniformity must be achieved by means of a national, and no longer local, press. The press, therefore, takes full advantage of such a political and historical conjuncture. Italian bourgeois women now represent a further expansion of the reading public, whose particular wants and likes must be charmed by interesting publications, and who must be retained as con- sumers of newspapers and periodicals. But the role of women does not stop with that of avid readers: women have also become a pool of potential collaborators able to contribute to the compilation of periodicals in particular. It is within the space marked by these virtual places — the editorial board, maga- zines and the individual columns — that decisive matches are played out for Italian culture. Here, while schools have just started the long-term task of the homogeniza- tion of the Italian language and culture, the evolutionary lines of the Italian language reach their fruition; here, within the literary field, there is an attempt to establish a balance of power between literary genres; it is here that the agonic negotiation be- tween the literary traditions of the Italian regions takes place. As far as literature is concerned, the space framed by newspaper pages affirms the presence of many and very competitive female writers.

    133 CAMILO JOSÉ CELA, CABALLERO BONALD Y LOS INICIOS DE PAPELES DE SON ARMADANS (1956-1958) CAMILO JOSÉ CELA, CABALLERO BONALD AND THE BEGINNINGS OF PAPELES DE SON ARMADANS (1956-1958) Julio Neira UNED (1956-1958) Resumen: En 1956, en pleno auge de la dictadura franquista, Camilo José Cela funda Papeles de Son Armadans en Palma de Mallorca con la pretensión de lograr una alta calidad literaria según el modelo de Revista de Occidente, la gran revista de preguerra (1923-1936) creada por José Ortega y Gasset. Para ello cuenta con la ayuda del poeta José Manuel Caballero Bonald, que actúa como subdirector y agente de la publicación en Madrid. Los contactos de ambos posibilitan una de Son Armadans Papeles amplia nómina de colaboradores de primer nivel, que, junto a la incorporación de autores exiliados y la presencia de todas las literaturas peninsulares, hacen de la revista la principal referencia intelectual de las décadas del 50 y del 60 en España. En el ámbito de la poesía, debe destacarse su atención a las nuevas promociones (Barral, Gil de Biedma, Goytisolo, etc.) y la voluntad de recuperar a los autores del Veintisiete en su conjunto, incluyendo a los más olvidados Cernuda, Prados y Altolaguirre. Se estudian los tres primeros años de la revista, hasta que motivos personales produjeron la ruptura de esa colaboración entre el novelista gallego y el poeta andaluz.     THE NEW JERSEY ITALIAN HERITAGE COMMISSION Italian Nobel Prize Recipients in Literature Grade Level: Grade 10–12 Subjects: Literature / World History Categories: Modern-Day Italy / History and Society Standards: Please read the New Jersey Student Learning Standards on page 8 before conducting the lesson. They will help you give explicit instructions to your students and help you create rubrics most appropriate for your class. Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. identify the significance of being awarded a Nobel Prize. 2. list four Italians who were awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature. 3. describe the various genres represented in the literary works of these Italian writers. Abstract: For centuries Italian writers have excelled in all areas of literature. Over the last one hundred years, four Italians have received the Novel Prize for Literature. Outside of their native Italy, however, they are relatively unknown. This lesson’s goal is to familiarize students with these Nobel Prize recipients. One result of this lesson will be that the students will be able to identify Giosuè Carducci, Grazia Deledda, Luigi Pirandello, and Dario Fo as Italians who have been awarded the Noble Prize in Literature. In this lesson the students will be able to identify the significance of the Nobel Prize. They also will be introduced to and learn to identify the writing styles, or genres, of these Italian writers. The focus activity of the lesson will involve the students using the jigsaw approach to explore the objective. The lesson’s assessment will ask the students to use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate what they have learned about these Italians.

Yo la admiraba por sus libros y disertaciones en Televisión. Ya habíamos hablado por teléfono y nos habíamos carteado, pero, al tenerla frente a frente, me impactó su porte señorial, su vitalidad, su carácter, su palabra... Era mujer de mediana estatura, de facciones nobles, de ojos oscuros sin llegar a negros, de pelo plateado, de voz grave y directa, de amena conversación y sonrisa amable a flor de labios, a pesar de los recuerdos imborrables de la Guerra incivil. Vino amablemente a Sevilla a presentar mi libro, popularísimo, Las Folklóricas (Sevilla, Editorial Coponca, 1983), al que había puesto bello Prólogo -. Se presentó la obra como un gran acontecimiento público y como un atrayente especial para los medios de comunicación, en el famoso Hotel Los Lebreros, que acababa de ser expropiado a RUMASA... Y resultó un magnífico acontecimiento sociocultural, por lo atractivo de la ilustre presentadora y por las personalidades del mundo de la canción y del arte, que acudieron al acto.     Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Prizes The Nobel Prizes were the idea of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor who lived from 1833 to 1896. Since 1901 prizes have been awarded every year in different areas of human achievement: Physics, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, Physiology/Medicine, Literature and, perhaps the most famous, the Nobel Peace Prize. Many famous people have received the Peace Prize. The first Nobel Peace Prize laureates were Frédéric Passy and Henri Dunant, who founded the Red Cross, and others include Albert Schweitzer, who pioneered work against leprosy, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela, former US President Jimmy Carter, Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, Barack Obama and last year, Malala Yousafzai. According to Alfred Nobel’s will, he stated that the Peace Prize should be given to the person (or sometimes organisation) that ‘shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses’. It is perhaps ironical that Nobel stipulated that there should be a Peace Prize, because he was a chemical engineer whose inventions included dynamite! Most of us would immediately connect dynamite with violence and war, but Nobel’s aim was to use it for getting minerals from rocks. It often happens that ideas which were originally designed for peaceful uses end up being manipulated for opposite aims. All the Nobel Prizes are awarded by the Swedish Academies, except for the Peace Prize, which is decided by the Nobel Comittee in Norway. Virtually all the most important scientific discoveries and influential economic theories have been recognised by them.

    1 Sanremo: a Villa Nobel sino al 28 gennaio la mostra dedicata a Carducci e alla Deledda di Redazione Riviera24.it – 13 Dicembre 2006 – 23:00 Nel centenario del Nobel a Giosue Carducci e a 80 anni da quello conferito a Grazia Deledda, Villa Nobel di Sanremo, ultima amatissima residenza di Alfred Nobel, ospita da domani la mostra I Nobel a Villa Nobel. Carducci e Deledda: una terra un tempo un mondo che rimarrà aperta fino al 28 gennaio 2007. L?evento rientra nelle iniziative del Comitato Nazionale per le celebrazioni del centenario della consegna del Premio Nobel a Giosue Carducci. Al comitato è stato concesso l?Alto Patronato del Presidente della Repubblica. La mostra Carducci e Deledda: una terra un tempo un mondo rende omaggio ai due grandi protagonisti che per primi in Italia ebbero il prestigioso riconoscimento dell?Accademia di Svezia: Carducci alla sesta edizione del Premio, nel 1906, e Grazia Deledda nel 1926, l? anno dopo George Bernard Shaw, e l?anno prima di Henri Bergson. Il filo conduttore della mostra, la traccia che tiene insieme autografi, documenti rari e foto inedite, sarà rappresentato dalle loro figure forti, particolarissime, legate, seppur in maniera e in situazioni molto diverse, alle rispettive terre d?origine: la Maremma e la Barbagia. La mostra, curata da Giuseppe Fusari e organizzata da Deepart, vedrà esposti documenti, pubblicazioni, prime edizioni, fotografie, caricature, mappe, cartoline, oggetti personali e dipinti che raccontano ?le terre? di Maremma e di Barbagia. Per quanto riguarda Giosue Carducci, saranno esposti manoscritti di poesie dedicate alla Maremma, da San Martino a Idillio Maremmano a Traversando la Maremma Toscana, prime edizioni, documenti di viaggio, mappe, fotografie, cartoline con un Carducci ?uomo immagine?, lettere e caricature, carteggi e, da Casa Carducci, la copia dell?attestazione del Nobel.
