  • Correlations Between Creativity In
1 ARTISTIC SCIENTISTS AND SCIENTIFIC ARTISTS: THE LINK BETWEEN POLYMATHY AND CREATIVITY ROBERT AND MICHELE ROOT-BERNSTEIN, 517-336-8444; [email protected] [Near final draft for Root-Bernstein, Robert and Root-Bernstein, Michele. (2004). “Artistic Scientists and Scientific Artists: The Link Between Polymathy and Creativity,” in Robert Sternberg, Elena Grigorenko and Jerome Singer, (Eds.). Creativity: From Potential to Realization (Washington D.C.: American Psychological Association, 2004), pp. 127-151.] The literature comparing artistic and scientific creativity is sparse, perhaps because it is assumed that the arts and sciences are so different as to attract different types of minds who work in very different ways. As C. P. Snow wrote in his famous essay, The Two Cultures, artists and intellectuals stand at one pole and scientists at the other: “Between the two a gulf of mutual incomprehension -- sometimes ... hostility and dislike, but most of all lack of understanding... Their attitudes are so different that, even on the level of emotion, they can't find much common ground." (Snow, 1964, 4) Our purpose here is to argue that Snow's oft-repeated opinion has little substantive basis. Without denying that the products of the arts and sciences are different in both aspect and purpose, we nonetheless find that the processes used by artists and scientists to forge innovations are extremely similar. In fact, an unexpected proportion of scientists are amateur and sometimes even professional artists, and vice versa. Contrary to Snow’s two-cultures thesis, the arts and sciences are part of one, common creative culture largely composed of polymathic individuals.

  • Pan Macmillan September 2021 Highlights
Pan Macmillan September 2021 Highlights They Got You Too Futhi Ntshingila Hans van Rooyen is a former police general raised by two women who survived the 1899 South African War. He finds himself being cared for in an old age home by the daughter of liberation struggle activists. At 80, he carries with him the memories of crimes he committed as an officer under the apartheid government. Having eluded the public confessions at the TRC for his time in the Border Wars, he retained his position in the democratic South Africa, serving as an institutional memory for a new generation of police recruits. Zoe Zondi is tasked to care for the old man. Her gentle and compassionate nature prompts Hans to review his decision to go to the grave with all his secrets. Zoe has her own life story to tell and, as their unlikely bond deepens, strengthened by the isolation that COVID-19 lockdown brings, they provide a safe space for each other to say the things that are often left unsaid. • John Harbison's Songs for Baritone: a Performer's Guide
John Harbison‘s Songs for Baritone: A Performer‘s Guide A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2011 by Peter C. Keates B.M.A., University of Oklahoma, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, CCM, 2006 Abstract This document is a performance guide for Words from Paterson and Flashes and Illuminations, John Harbison‘s song cycles for baritone. It confronts the issues of text interpretation and musical style one must address in order to give the most informed performance of these songs. It provides a synthesis of information about the poems and readings of the poetry Harbison set to music, offers insight into Harbison‘s interpretations of the text, and demonstrates how Harbison‘s atonal style and unique compositional techniques provide a successful musical setting for the chosen texts. The guide also discusses performance issues based on personal experience as well as the experience of the composer and other performers. The poetic style of William Carlos Williams, Michael Fried, Czeslaw Milosz, Elizabeth Bishop, and Eugenio Montale are examined. A transcription of an interview with John Harbison is also included. “This place being South Africa”: Reading race, sex and power in J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace by Kimberly Chou “This place being South Africa”: Reading race, sex and power in J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace by Kimberly Chou A thesis presented for the B.A. degree with Honors in The Department of English University of Michigan Spring 2009 © Kimberly Chou 16 March 2009 For fellow readers who have picked up this deeply provocative novel and found themselves at its close with more questions than answers—and for those who have yet to join the conversation. Acknowledgements I am indebted to my advisor, Jennifer Wenzel, for her guidance, patience and forthright criticism. Thank you for challenging me to challenge myself, and for sharing great appreciation for the work of J.M. Coetzee and, most importantly, a love of South Africa. Thank you to Cathy Sanok and Andrea Zemgulys, for unwavering support throughout the thesis-writing process. Thank you to the 2009 English honors thesis cohort for creating a space of encouragement and commiseration. Thank you to the peers and professors at the University of Cape Town who influenced early development of this project. A special thank you to Obs Books in Observatory, Cape Town. Thank you to my family and friends, who have, at this point, likely heard more about the ethics of reading and the politics of place than they had ever wished. Sincere thanks to M.M., F.R., E.M. and J.N. for their honesty and advice. Abstract Whatever discourse J.M. Coetzee intended to arouse with Disgrace, his 1999 novel that addresses changing social dynamics in post-apartheid South Africa, the conversation it has inspired since its publication has been dominated by readers’ suspicions.

This project would not have been possible without the organic support of my committee. I am specifically thankful to my supervisor, Elizabeth Richmond-Garza, for giving me the freedom to explore ideas at my own pace, and for reminding me to pause when my thoughts would become restless. A pause is as important as movement in the journey of a thought. I am thankful to Martha Ann Selby for suggesting me to subhead sections in the dissertation. What a world of difference subheadings make! I am grateful for all the conversations I had with Cesar Salgado in our classes on Transcolonial Joyce, Literary Theory, and beyond. I am also very thankful to Michael Johnson and Hannah Chapelle Wojciehowski for patiently listening to me in Boston and Austin over luncheons and dinners respectively. I am forever indebted to David Damrosch for continuing to read all my drafts since February 2007. I am very glad that our paths crossed in Kali’s Kolkata.

The question of diasporic positionality is inherent in the relationship between aesthetic and ethical discourses, for the two discourses were born in a Western tradition, once foreign to Mu Xin.
