    Dario Fo, The Accidental Death of an Anarchist 1997 Nobel Laureate in Literature Accidental Death of an Anarchist was a reaction to the arrest of anarchist railway man Giuseppi Pinelli. On December 12, 1969 a bomb went off in the Agricultural Bank in Milan killing 17 people and wounding 100. Immediately after the bombing fascists of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) distributed leaflets denouncing the 'red terror' and police in Milan went into action, sweeping up a number of socialist, communist and anarchist activists. One of these was Pinelli, well known as a pacifist opposed to individual acts of violence. After four days of interrogation in police headquarters Pinelli 'fell' out of a fourth floor and died. Police claimed that the death was an 'accident'. These events sent a shock wave throughout Italy. There were demonstrations, articles in the press, inquires, etc. In 1971, the policemen in charge of the investigation, Calabresi, was charged with manslaughter. Calabresi, in turn, launched a lawsuit against Lotta Continua, the newspaper that had exposed many of the inconstancies in the police version of events. These came to an end in May on 1972 when Calabresi was assassinated in front of his house by 'unknown assailants.' Ten years later in Catanzaro, 1 three fascists were convicted of the Milan bombings. One of them, Giannettini turned out to be a paid informer for the Italian police. Dario Fo, working in Milan with the Capannone of Via Colletta, wrote the play in 1970 and it toured Italy playing to audiences totaling more than a million. It caused a sensation itself, creating a storm of controversy in the press, bomb threats to the theatres, etc.

The announcement added Pinter’s name to a list of authors rais- ing the strongest possible voices of political dissent in their respective countries. Like Jelinek, Dario Fo, Gao Xingjian, Wole Soyinka, and other playwright-novelists who have received the prize in recent years, Pinter has expressed for decades an underlying commitment to social justice, freedom of expression, human rights, and resistance to authoritarian regimes. Although the academy’s official citation made minimal mention of Pinter’s polem- ics, observers wondered whether Stockholm intended to endorse his timely denuncia- tions of American and British foreign policy. Pinter shaped his dramaturgy of psy- chological menace and staccato utterances in the 1950s and 1960s and has not deviated much from it since. But over the past two decades, the author has forged a second métier as a human rights campaigner and political firebrand. In Britain he regularly appears at demonstrations and contributes to newspaper opinion pages. In 1985, Pinter and Arthur Miller investigated the Turkish military dictatorship’s alleged persecution of writers on behalf of International P.E.N. The author has advocated for the rights of Kurds in Turkey (calling that government’s policies “genocide” and dramatizing the persecution in his play Mountain Language).

    THE POLITICS OF HAROLD PINTER’S PLAYS Ruben Moi One of the 2005 Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter’s recent plays, The New World Order, from 1993, offers a self-glorifying exchange between two torturists: Lionel: I feel so pure. Des: Well, you’re right. You’re right to feel pure. You know why? Lionel: Why? Des: Because you’re keeping the world clean for democracies.1 The ironic equivocation in the last sentence plays on, as does the title, the deployment of torture in the defence of democracy, a dehumanis- ing act that in its very execution undermines the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity – the unassailable values upon which the concept of democracy has traditionally been founded. Obviously, the excerpt also parodies individual self-righteousness and political ideal- ism at the present time when the menace to human rights and the established form of government in most of the western world appears, perhaps, to loom larger within the realms of democracy than in any alternative world order, at least according to Pinter. The New World Order is only one of several shorter plays from the latter period of his career that hardly leave anybody in doubt about their meaning and message – a rather clear-cut contrast to the thought-provoking ambi- guities and polysemy of his plays of the 1950s and -60s, which made such an impact on the stage of its day. Readers and audiences of Pinter’s plays who are perplexed about the reorientations of his career and the status of his art appear justified. The protean changes of Pinter’s art raise a series of questions about aesthetic autonomy and political commitment.

    THE PLAY OF LAW: COMPARING PERFORMANCES IN LAW AND THEATRE * NICOLE ROGERS I am undertaking an investigation into the interrelationship between law and theatre. I shall explore the interrelationship between law and theatre by considering case studies in which legal performances have been re-presented or reproduced as theatre. Such case studies demonstrate that there are certain undeniable similarities between law and theatre. In both disciplines, performance and thus play, albeit very different forms of play, are central. Yet there are fundamental differences between legal and theatrical performances. I shall examine these differences, arriving, finally, at violence: legal performances are anchored in violence and theatrical performances are not. A comparison between law and theatre is not a purely whimsical one. Increasingly, as Giorgio Agamben has asserted, modern Western societies resemble a Schmittian ‘state of exception’ in which the rule of law has become powerless in the face of arbitrary acts of violence on the part of the executive and the language of exceptionalism has become commonplace. 1 Contemporary legal performances in the form of highly mediatised terror trials are examples of state-orchestrated spectacle, in which the violence of the state is brought to bear upon the enemy: individuals who themselves have not yet committed acts of terrorism but who are easily identifiable as terrorists due to racial and/or religious characteristics. In such a context, the question of whether and, if so, how, legal performances can be uncoupled from state violence is worth exploring. I shall argue that re-positioning the play of law in more playful contexts offers imaginative possibilities for such an uncoupling.
