DOI: 10.19195/2082-8322.11.1 Duilio Caocci ORCID: 0000-0001-5432-3137 University of Cagliari Free to choose: Female characters in the stories of Grazia Deledda The last quarter of the 19th century witnessed the phenomenon of the great par- ticipation of women in the Italian press. Due to the process of unification, Italy is now perceived as an emerging single market in which linguistic uniformity must be achieved by means of a national, and no longer local, press. The press, therefore, takes full advantage of such a political and historical conjuncture. Italian bourgeois women now represent a further expansion of the reading public, whose particular wants and likes must be charmed by interesting publications, and who must be retained as con- sumers of newspapers and periodicals. But the role of women does not stop with that of avid readers: women have also become a pool of potential collaborators able to contribute to the compilation of periodicals in particular. It is within the space marked by these virtual places — the editorial board, maga- zines and the individual columns — that decisive matches are played out for Italian culture. Here, while schools have just started the long-term task of the homogeniza- tion of the Italian language and culture, the evolutionary lines of the Italian language reach their fruition; here, within the literary field, there is an attempt to establish a balance of power between literary genres; it is here that the agonic negotiation be- tween the literary traditions of the Italian regions takes place. As far as literature is concerned, the space framed by newspaper pages affirms the presence of many and very competitive female writers. -

However, some important literature written by women during this period has survived, and many other women writers published work that has not survived. In this course you are asked to read the extant texts by women, from Sappho, who lived in the seventh century BC, through to Eudocia and Egeria in the fifth-sixth centuries AD. -

Parasols & Gloves & Broches & Circulating Libraries MARY MARGARET BENSON Northup Lrbrary, Linfield College, McMinnville, OR 97128 "Charlotte was to go . & to buy new Parasols, new Gloves, & new Broches, for her sisters & herself at the Library, which Mr. P. was anxiously wishing to support" (Sanditon 374). What kind of library was this circulating library at Sanditon? It is certainly not like any library familiar to most contemporary readers. Not only could one purchase "so many pretty Temptations" (S 390), but Mrs. Whitby, the "librarian," seems as likely to refer one to sources for Chamber- Horses as to a copy of Camilla. Before the eighteenth century, libraries in England were strictly for those who were associated with universities or other learned societies, or for those wealthy enough to collect and house their own books. While we don't see the former sort of library in the works of Jane Austen, we certainly see the latter. The library at Pemberley is surely magnificent-even though we have Miss Bingley's word for it. As Mr. Darcy says, "'It ought to be good . it has been the work of many generations"' (P&P 38). One can imagine that Mr. Knightley, too, would have an excellent library, though perhaps his collection would be of less antiquity. However, for those who could not afford a "gentleman's" library or even for those gentlefolk who were in town or at a spa for a short time, the circulating library filled the gap. Circulating libraries were part of the popular culture of the day, and references to them are found throughout Jane Austen. -

They will help you give explicit instructions to your students and help you create rubrics most appropriate for your class. Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. identify the significance of being awarded a Nobel Prize. 2. list four Italians who were awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature. 3. describe the various genres represented in the literary works of these Italian writers. Abstract: For centuries Italian writers have excelled in all areas of literature. Over the last one hundred years, four Italians have received the Novel Prize for Literature. Outside of their native Italy, however, they are relatively unknown. This lesson’s goal is to familiarize students with these Nobel Prize recipients. One result of this lesson will be that the students will be able to identify Giosuè Carducci, Grazia Deledda, Luigi Pirandello, and Dario Fo as Italians who have been awarded the Noble Prize in Literature. In this lesson the students will be able to identify the significance of the Nobel Prize. They also will be introduced to and learn to identify the writing styles, or genres, of these Italian writers. The focus activity of the lesson will involve the students using the jigsaw approach to explore the objective. The lesson’s assessment will ask the students to use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate what they have learned about these Italians. -

Post Campus of Long Island University, Greenvale, NY, 1 1548 One more universally acknowledged truth is that Jane Austen's novels concem education. D. D. Devlin noted her reliance on Locke's work. Marilyn Butler noted the similarity of many of her ideas to those of the deeply conservative writers of conduct books for women.' It seems to me, however, that while Jane Austen shares some of the ideas common to the more conservative writers of her time, she is far less doctrinaire than they are. She is also much more interested in using these ideas for their literary value, involving characterization, plot structure and the comic dynamic of her novels. In addition, she does differ from the other writers on education and conduct in that they insist the goal of education for women is the development of good nature, while she believes the goal of education.for *o*"n to be identical to the goal of eduction for men: self-knowledge. The eighteenth century took its ideas on the subject of education from John Locke. His some Thoughts on Education (1678) was widely read and immensely influential. Locke's medical background assured that he would be considLred an authority on the physical aspects of child care and his concern with perception and knowledge as evidenced in his Essay on Human Understandiig (1690) made him an authority on intellectual development. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Cartographies of Estrangement: Transnational Female Identity and Literary Narratives between Italy and Eastern Europe A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Italian by Renata Redford 2016 © Copyright by Renata Redford 2016 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Cartographies of Estrangement: Transnational Female Identity and Literary Narratives between Italy and Eastern Europe by Renata Redford Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Lucia Re, Chair This dissertation investigates a vital body of women’s writing in Italian about the estranging effects of migration in order to emphasize the articulation of a literary discourse that undermines conventional depictions of the Eastern European female migrant. I provide evidence of the emergence in their work of a distinctly transnational approach to literary writing (narrative in particular), founded on a creative way of addressing questions of estrangement, the body, and memory. I consider the work of three authors, who have yet to be fully acknowledged in the Italian literary landscape: the Italophone writers Jarmila Očkayová (1955-present; Italo- Slovakian) and Ingrid Beatrice Coman (1971-present; Italo-Romanian living in Malta), and Marisa Madieri (1938-1996; Italo-Hungarian from Istria), whose native language was Italian. My analysis focuses on the stylistic, thematic, and structural elements that Očkayová, Coman and Madieri employ to engage with and
