Younger Travelers

This itinerary is designed with children age 9 and older in mind. The itinerary can be tweaked for your family’s needs. For safety reasons, children must be at least 7 years old to ride their own bike. Trailers and tag-along bikes are available for younger children Safety triangles are provided to all children on tour Please note, children must be age 5 and older to participate in rafting

For training purposes and those sensitive to altitude, note that the elevation where we ride can reach up to 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) above sea level. Additionally, the hike on Day 2 will reach 11,000 feet.

New Mexico weather conditions often include afternoon thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by a short downpour or even hail. Appropriate rain gear is highly recommended.

DAY 1 Taos Pueblo

This morning, meet your guides in Santa Fe and transfer up to Taos. After a bike fitting and safety briefing, we’ll take a ride through the high desert plains outside of town. There’s plenty of scenery to appreciate, including the towering Sangre de Cristo Mountains rising from the verdant ranchland all around us. Our destination is the Taos Pueblo, an village that has been continuously inhabited for over a millennium. During lunch at a private residence, we’ll taste ancient cuisine and experience firsthand the hospitality and culture of the local community. After, pedal back to our boutique hotel for a chance to relax and explore Taos a bit before dinner. Tonight, our local chef friend Chris will entertain us as he prepares a private welcome dinner to kick off the week.

DAY 2 Mountain Air and New Mexican Fare

Wake up to a bountiful breakfast spread that will fuel our day of hiking in the Sangre di Cristo Mountains. We’ll trek through the fragrant high pine forests to a crystal-clear mountain lake and take our lunch al fresco. The highest peak in New Mexico looms above us, and reaching the summit is an option for those who are feeling ambitious! Back in Taos, spend time in the town plaza or indulge in an afternoon nap. Tonight we head to Chris’s house and help him prepare a typical New Mexican meal featuring farm-fresh ingredients.

The Rio Grande is one of America’s most iconic rivers, and it flows through an incredible gorge just outside of Taos. We’ll start out floating calmly through the canyon, practicing our paddling and spotting wildlife on the banks. After lunch, the rapids start to pick up and we’ll run six exciting miles through the lower gorge. Though the white water is lots of fun, we’ll be rafting Level II-III rapids so expect to get wet! At the end of our run, head back to Taos to dry off and dine at one of our favorite restaurants in town.

DAY 4 The High Road to Santa Fe

Today’s highlight is the High Road, a byway that links Taos and Santa Fe. Our ride begins at the pass above Taos with glorious views stretching all the way to the distant Jemez Mountains. Pop into some art galleries in the tiny town of Truchas, then pedal on to Chimayo. Here, a Catholic sanctuary draws pilgrims in search of miracles—and the sought-after Chimayo chile entices chefs in search of their rich, earthy flavor. Seek out the spice (if you wish) during a traditional New Mexican lunch in a restored family home, then finish riding right to the outskirts of Santa Fe. Get settled at our chic and cozy hotel in the heart of town and spend the evening in Santa Fe, where there are plenty of options for dinner on your own. (Note that most restaurants in Santa Fe close by 8:00 pm.)

We’re headed out of Santa Fe to hike the Jemez Mountains! Put on your boots and head up to the complex of ancient cliff dwellings in Bandelier National Monument, scrambling up ladders to peek into these cave-like . After a day of exploring, we’ll stop in Los Alamos to contemplate the birthplace of the Manhattan Project. This evening, gather for a memorable dinner in Santa Fe and relive the highlights of our week in New Mexico.

DAY 6 See You Later, Santa Fe!

There’s one more beautiful breakfast to enjoy before you say goodbye to sunny Santa Fe. Before you go, fit in a final stroll around the old town, do some shopping, or carry out a coffee from an independent café. Later in the morning your guides will see you off at the Santa Fe Airport.
