Abstract: The White Family consisted of husband and wife Joseph Charles White and Nancy Metz White, and their twin daughters Michele and Jacqueline. Nancy was a local artist who designed and created sculptures constructed out of discarded scrap metal, heating and cooling ventilation pipes, and other recycled items. Originally from Madison, she graduated from UW- Madison with a bachelor’s degree in art education and also did graduate study there. She is primarily noted for creating large-scale outdoor public sculptures, which include Tree of Life in Mitchell Boulevard Park in 2002, Magic Grove in Enderis Park in 2006, Helping Hands at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan, and Fantasy Garden at St. John’s On the Lake. In addition to being a sculptor, Nancy also was an art teacher and the Creative Art Coordinator at Urban Day School Elementary from 1970 to 1978. Joseph C. White was born in 1925 in Michigan. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern University and also served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. In the 1960s, as Vice President of Inland Steel Products Company, he led the company’s involvement in the pioneering School Construction Systems Development (SCSD) project for California schools. He left Inland Steel and formed his own company, Syncon, to focus on modular construction projects. He was also an adjunct architecture professor at UW- Milwaukee. -

Montoya A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2018 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Elizabeth Sumida Huaman, Co-Chair Netra Chhetri, Co-Chair Laura Harjo ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores Brain Drain and Brain Circulation phenomena at Taos Pueblo, an Indigenous community located in northern New Mexico, USA. The study examines the push and pull factors that influence the migration of educated Taos Pueblo tribal members. The information contained in this dissertation was derived from a study that was completed from 2016-2017 in Taos Pueblo. It has become evident that Indigenous communities worldwide are currently experiencing massive migration away from reservations, rural, and communities of origin and towards urbanized centers. The research conducted in this dissertation was focused on both patterns and trends and possible distinct reasons for intellectual migration, especially in Indigenous communities. This dissertation is separated into three sections. The first part is a journal article that focused on Taos Pueblo intellectual migration patterns. The article draws from studies literature review, fieldwork methodology, methods, data and findings. The second part is a book chapter that centers on a literature review and theory development. The book chapter includes a discussion on the study findings and contains broad recommendations for addressing brain drain and promoting brain circulation in Taos Pueblo. The third and final section is a Policy Paper is aimed at two audiences, the first is Indigenous Leadership and secondly, college age students who are interested in working with Indigenous Communities. -

Colonial New Mexico
COLONIAL NEW MEXICO INTRODUCTION During the late evening hours of 15 July 1945, Enrico Fermi wandered among his fellow scientists at the Trinity Test Site soliciting bets. He wondered. Would the test bomb ignite the atmosphere? And, if so, would it destroy just New Mexico or destroy the world? A deafening roar, a brilliant orange ball of fire and a thunderous shockwave at 5:29:45 a.m. the next morning answered his question. In that same instant, the military future of New Mexico departed dramatically from its martial past. Very quickly, a territory and state that was often an outpost of empire and a battleground for Native Americans and Europeans, was becoming inextricably linked to a new ideological and imperial struggle being waged on a global scale. Despite that, two things remained constant. New Mexico would be just as it had been, dependant on a military presence for survival and stability. Secondly, those who would take part in modern conflict came from often diverse backgrounds. From the warrior traditions of the ancient Pueblo Indians to the significance of the state in the military-industrial complex of the atomic age, New Mexico's military heritage has been and continues to be defined by the contributions of peoples from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. For four centuries after the first Spanish expedition, New Mexicans fought each other in a prolonged struggle for control of the land, its resources and even its people before uniting together in the twentieth century against foreign powers. The legacy of these conflicts extends far beyond the fields of battle to an important and influential element in New Mexico's society - the veterans themselves. -
