THE LIFE AND TEACHING OF WILLIAM SHARPEY (1802-1880) 'FATHER OF MODERN PHYSIOLOGY' IN BRITAIN by D. W. TAYLOR PART I I. INTRODUCTION THE TITLE-PHRASE was used by E. A. Schifer,1 one of Sharpey's latest and most distinguished pupils, who throughout his life acknowledged his debt to his old teacher and who eventually added the name of Sharpey to his own.2 Such a phrase may be historically suspect but it represents an opinion subscribed to by many others, not only his pupils and colleagues. Burdon Sanderson, who succeeded him, wrote: 'If I, or any of the men I have mentioned, were asked to what circumstances the un- questionable productiveness of the University College School in scientific men is due, all would I think unhesitatingly attribute it to the influence of one man, Dr. Sharpey.'3 Much later, A. V. Hill said of him: 'by Sharpey's example, other medical schools were encouraged to start proper laboratories and adequate instruction in Physiology . to his fine judgement of men and to his power of inspiring them to original work, the present high position of British Physiology is due . .'.4 The British Medical Journal in its obituary notice, stated that 'for years he was the greatest teacher of anatomy and physiology in the country, occupying a position here equal to that held by Johannes Miiller in Germany.'" In his History of the Physiological Society, Schiifer (by then, Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer) wrote that during a period when other experimental sciences were rapidly progressing, Physiology in this country could show no names worthy to be mentioned with those of Magendie, Bernard, MUller, Helmholtz or Ludwig... -

C, Introduction Many hours have been spent in gathering and compiling the data that makes up this genealogy of the Chipman family; a correspondence has been carried on extending to every part of the United States and Canada, requiring several thousand letters; but it has been a pleasant task. What is proposed by genealogical research is not to laud individuals, nor to glorify such families as would other wise remain without glory. Heraldic arms have as little worth as military aside from the worth of those bearing them. Not the armor but the army merits and should best repay describing. It has been my earnest desire to make this work as complete and accurate as possible. In this connection I wish to acknowledge the valuable aid in research work rendered by Mr. W. A. Chipman (1788), Mr. S. L. Chip man (1959), Mrs. B. W. Gillespie (see 753) and Mrs. Margaret T. Reger (see 920). C Orgin THE NAME CHIPMAN is of English otjgin, early existing in various forms such as,-Chipenham, Chippenham, Chiepman and Chipnam. The name is to be found quite frequently in the books prepared by the Record Commis sion appointed by the British Parliament, and from i085 to 1350 it usually appears with the prefix de, as,~e Chippenham. Several towns in England bear the name in one of its f onns, for instance: Chippenham, Buckingham Co., twenty-two miles from London, is "a Liberty in the Parish and Hundred of Burnham, forming a part of the ancient demesnes of the crown and said to be the site of a palace of the Mercian kings." Chippenham, Cambridge Co., sixty-one miles from London, is '' a Parish in the Hundred of Staplehou, a dis charged Vicarage in the Archdeaconry of Suffolk and Diocese of Norwich." Chippenham, Wilts Co., ninety-three miles from London, is "a Borough, Market-town and Parish in the Hundred of Chippenham and a place of great antiquity. -

Rulers of Opinion Women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, 1799-1812 Harriet Olivia Lloyd UCL Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Science 2018 1 I, Harriet Olivia Lloyd, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the role of women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in its first decade and contributes to the field by writing more women into the history of science. Using the method of prosopography, 844 women have been identified as subscribers to the Royal Institution from its founding on 7 March 1799, until 10 April 1812, the date of the last lecture given by the chemist Humphry Davy (1778- 1829). Evidence suggests that around half of Davy’s audience at the Royal Institution were women from the upper and middle classes. This female audience was gathered by the Royal Institution’s distinguished patronesses, who included Mary Mee, Viscountess Palmerston (1752-1805) and the chemist Elizabeth Anne, Lady Hippisley (1762/3-1843). A further original contribution of this thesis is to explain why women subscribed to the Royal Institution from the audience perspective. First, Linda Colley’s concept of the “service élite” is used to explain why an institution that aimed to apply science to the “common purposes of life” appealed to fashionable women like the distinguished patronesses. These women were “rulers of opinion,” women who could influence their peers and transform the image of a degenerate ruling class to that of an élite that served the nation. -

©JSR2018 Introducing Patrick Copland Introducing Patrick Copland: 18th century Professor, Mechanic and Educational Innovator Dr John S. Reid, Department of Physics, Meston Building, University of Aberdeen, AB24 3UE, Scotland. The text is based on a talk given in Donostia to the European Physical Society. This is a story from the Scottish Enlightenment, well-known for producing Adam Smith’s innovative contributions to Economics, James Watt’s technology, James Hutton’s vision that founded modern Geology, Joseph Black’s insight into Chemistry, and innovative practitioners in medicine, philosophy, architecture, literature and other disciplines. Adam Smith and James Hutton have Institutes named after them, Watt the unit of power. It was an exciting time to be active in academic life in Scotland, even for those whose names would not appear in future history books. One such was Patrick Copland. Had he made one game-changing discovery, his reputation would have lasted, though he is still mentioned for introducing chlorine bleaching into Britain. Copland was an innovator of a different kind. He was a distributor of knowledge, an educator, highly respected in his day for providing a vital link in spreading scientific ideas into society. In some ways I’m reminded of the even more eminent Sir John Herschel (1792 – 1871): hugely well known in the 19th century but there is no Herschel effect, or Herschel equation or Herschel phenomenon, so now largely forgotten in science except by historians. I do like John Herschel’s words “Science is the knowledge of many, methodically digested and arranged, so as to become attainable by one”. -

School of Education Science, Education and Social Vision of Five Nineteenth Century Headmasters David Theodore Bottomley This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy of Curtin University October 2018 DECLARATION ii ABSTRACT The study investigates how science was used by five nineteenth-century headmasters at a time when the Church of England fought to maintain its historical control of elementary education and its associated Grammar schools resisted attempts to include science in their elementary or secondary curricula; when long hours in mills precluded poor children from education; when class attitudes biased Government enquiries into education and industrial training. It was a time when belief in laissez- faire economics conflicted with the exercise of moral judgements. The headmasters viewed their students as individuals and sought to equip them with worldviews. Their curricula were inspired by their visions for society. They used science, scientific method and practical learning. They liberated subjects from traditional boundaries to provide students with comprehensive understanding of areas of knowledge. They emphasised student self-learning and provided the facilities for it. There were similarities in their radical objectives and methods. They effectively interacted with local communities. Their methods mostly did not survive their school tenures but offer challenging thoughts for science teaching today.
