SLATER V. BAKER AND STAPLETON (C.B. 1767): UNPUBLISHED MONOGRAPHS BY ROBERT D. MILLER ROBERT D. MILLER, J.D., M.S. HYG. HONORARY FELLOW MEDICAL HISTORY AND BIOETHICS DEPARTMENT SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON PRINTED BY AUTHOR MADISON, WISCONSIN 2019 © ROBERT DESLE MILLER 2019 BOUND BY GRIMM BOOK BINDERY, MONONA, WI AUTHOR’S INTRODUCTION These unpublished monographs are being deposited in several libraries. They have their roots in my experience as a law student. I have been interested in the case of Slater v. Baker and Stapleton since I first learned of it in law school. I was privileged to be a member of the Yale School Class of 1974. I took an elective course with Dr. Jay Katz on the protection of human subjects and then served as a research assistant to Dr. Katz in the summers of 1973 and 1974. Dr. Katz’s course used his new book EXPERIMENTATION WITH HUMAN BEINGS (New York: Russell Sage Foundation 1972). On pages 526-527, there are excerpts from Slater v. Baker. I sought out and read Slater v. Baker. It seemed that there must be an interesting backstory to the case, but it was not accessible at that time. I then practiced health law for nearly forty years, representing hospitals and doctors, and writing six editions of a textbook on hospital law. I applied my interest in experimentation with human beings by serving on various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) during that period. IRBs are federally required committees that review and approve experiments with humans at hospitals, universities and other institutions.

  • Biography of Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie
Short Biographies of Philosophizing Chemists Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie (1817-1880) by William H. Brock The English chemist Benjamin Collins Brodie, who was regarded by Kekulé as “definitely one of the most philosophical minds in chemistry” (R. An- schütz, August Kekulé , Berlin, 1929, I, p. 187), was the eldest son of Britain’s leading physiologist and surgeon, Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie (1783-1862). Brodie père , who was president of the Royal Society from 1858 to 1861, had been made a baronet in 1834 for his medical services to the Royal family, and his son inherited the baronetcy in 1862. A theist and anti-materialist, Brodie senior was profoundly interested in metaphysical questions. He published two volumes of Psychological enquiries (1854 and 1862), a series of dialogues between a country gentleman, a doctor and a lawyer, that were much influ- enced by Humphry Davy’s posthumous Consolations in travel (1830). These well-meaning, but turgid, dialogues were concerned with unfashionable topics such as dualism, natural theology, and the problems of pain and immortality. They seem to have made little impact on Brodie’s contemporaries, who were finding Herbert Spencer’s psychological and evolutionary writings more ex- citing. However, their publication suggests that the younger Brodie was brought up in an atmosphere of philosophical inquiry in which the metaphys- ical foundations of scientific beliefs were critically questioned. The younger Brodie was educated at Harrow School from where he won a classics scholarship to Caius College, Cambridge. However, his father, pre- ferring him to be educated as a commoner, sent him to Balliol College, Ox- ford in 1835.

  • Chipman Family a Genealogy Of
THE CHIPMAN FAMILY A GENEALOGY OF THE CHIPMANS IN AMERICA 1631-1920 BY BERT LEE CHIPMAN BERT L. CHIPMAN. PUBLISHER WINSTON-SALEM. N. C. COPYRIGHT 1920 BERT L. CHIPMAN MONOTYPED BY THE WINSTON PRINTING COMPANY WrN9TON-SALEM, N. C, Introduction Many hours have been spent in gathering and compiling the data that makes up this genealogy of the Chipman family; a correspondence has been carried on extending to every part of the United States and Canada, requiring several thousand letters; but it has been a pleasant task. What is proposed by genealogical research is not to laud individuals, nor to glorify such families as would other wise remain without glory. Heraldic arms have as little worth as military aside from the worth of those bearing them. Not the armor but the army merits and should best repay describing. It has been my earnest desire to make this work as complete and accurate as possible. In this connection I wish to acknowledge the valuable aid in research work rendered by Mr. W. A. Chipman (1788), Mr. S. L. Chip man (1959), Mrs. B. W. Gillespie (see 753) and Mrs. Margaret T. Reger (see 920). C Orgin THE NAME CHIPMAN is of English otjgin, early existing in various forms such as,-Chipenham, Chippenham, Chiepman and Chipnam. The name is to be found quite frequently in the books prepared by the Record Commis sion appointed by the British Parliament, and from i085 to 1350 it usually appears with the prefix de, as,~e Chippenham. Several towns in England bear the name in one of its f onns, for instance: Chippenham, Buckingham Co., twenty-two miles from London, is "a Liberty in the Parish and Hundred of Burnham, forming a part of the ancient demesnes of the crown and said to be the site of a palace of the Mercian kings." Chippenham, Cambridge Co., sixty-one miles from London, is '' a Parish in the Hundred of Staplehou, a dis charged Vicarage in the Archdeaconry of Suffolk and Diocese of Norwich." Chippenham, Wilts Co., ninety-three miles from London, is "a Borough, Market-town and Parish in the Hundred of Chippenham and a place of great antiquity.

  • Imperfect Notion at Present. the Faculty of Medical Professors Were
Letter I 15th July 1836 My dear Sharpey, The day before yesterday I got a summons from Carswell' to see him in some way or other as soon as possible and when I called on him I found you were the subject of conversation. From what he said I think there is every likelihood ofyour being chosen by the Council of the London University, but of course we can have but a very imperfect notion at present. The Faculty of Medical professors were to meet today to discuss the matter & Carswell says that their suggestion is very generally attended to by the Council. Mayo2 seemed to have an inclination to offer himself and Grainger3 is I suppose a candidate but Carswell seems to think that others as well as he is himselfwill be for having you. I need not say what tumult of feelings all this raised in my mind. The emoluments ofthe situation appear to be nearly £800 a year and you will deliver your lectures in much more advantageous circumstances there than you can do in Edinburgh.
