REPORT TO THE MARITIME COMMUNITY 2016 CENTER REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2016

Greetings, friends! Looking back at 2016 was a treat—it was another in a string of great years. We opened the doors on the Marine Thrift in January, added some incredible staff, executed a solid year of programming, the second Race to Alaska, The sea is simply the and the 40th Wooden Boat Festival. It was a milestone year in a way that felt less like an unforeseen windfall and more like the steady solid progress of an organiza- best teacher we know. tion executing to plan. 2017 has more of the fast and steady progress that we’ve laid out in the strategic plan we unveiled early this year. We’re on the move, reaching out and finding ways to collaborate with partners like the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and the Center for Wooden Boats in —pooling our resources for the good of the mission and to the increased sustainability of all involved. We’ll have new programs, new experiments, and new ways for people to engage. Our focus this year is both near and really far—improvements to make our campus more compelling and usable for casual visitors, and international trips to let the mission and programs take flight and give our program participants the chance for rare adventure. It was a great year, and the prologue for another one. Thanks for your part of it,

Steve Oliver, Board President Jake Beattie, Executive Director

4 5 SCHOOL PROGRAMS

As one of my most reluctant learners reflected about his experience at the Maritime Center, “If only school was like this everyday!” When I asked him gently what he meant, he said “You get to learn by doing, everything fits together like a puzzle.” —Chimacum Teacher

One thing I learned is that it is okay to be open and talk to others when you’re having a problem or something you’re keeping to yourself that’s hurting you. I really learned that this year. 380 —Bravo Team student STUDENTS I love working with other people my age to navigate the waters around where we live. Getting to see marine wildlife is something that I always look forward to, and being able to just BE on the water. I love that I feel comfortable on longboats. —Anonymous Student 45 TEACHERS Participating schools: Grant Street Elementary, Blue Heron Middle School, OCEAN – Bravo Team, Compass Rose Collective, Port Townsend High School, Catlin Gable, Bush School, Chimacum Middle School, Quilcene Middle School, Spring Street 540 School, Hyla Middle School, Evergreen School, Spruce Street School, HOURS Skagit Valley College

6 7 WBF BOATSHOP

Certainly one of the most ambitious and interesting projects to come through the boatshop was the 81’ spar for the 63 ½’ Sparkman & Stephens cutter Orient, launched in 1938 in Hong Kong.

In 2015 Doug Jones of Traditional Boatworks approached Boatshop Manager Scott Jones to ask about space rental for a large spar build. He needed a well- equipped, long, warm, and dry shop. And as it turned out they’re not exactly on every corner—not even in Port Townsend, where wooden boats are the rule. Doug landed the job, and for all 12 months of 2016 the 81’ spar, from a stack of rough spruce to finished piece of functional art, was a centerpiece of the shop.

Upon completion, the spar was boxed and shipped to Santa Barbara, CA, where Orient is berthed. All metal work was done by the experts at Port Townsend Foundry. Wood was sourced from Edensaw. The three shipwrights who did the work live right here in town. Gus Sebastian of Olympic Boat Transport loaded the spar onto the shipping trailer. Way to go, Port Townsend!

8 9 REGATTAS

Shipwrights’ Regatta 2016 celebrated the 26th anniversary of this well-loved race. Only the bravest come out to compete in this February race that officially kicks off the start of the sailing season. The Shipwrights’ Regatta has long been about getting as many people out on the water as possible, no matter what their sailing experience, and introducing them to the sport of sailing.

Classic Mariners’ Regatta The Classic Mariners’ Regatta is all about beautiful wooden boats, high-caliber sailors racing their hearts out, and a friendly atmosphere that is more potluck than yacht club. This year 23 boats took to the water in what might be described (depending on the skipper) as the absolutely perfect weather—80 degrees and windy. The races were stunning, the boats were beautiful, competition was fierce.

Thank you to the Port Townsend Sailing Association for partnering with us on such successful events.
