2 | Currents Spring Summer 2019 Experience our community’s abundance of creativity like never before.

Our community’s rich creative culture is an essential piece of what draws people to Bainbridge Island and why many choose to make this place their home. There’s something special about the way the arts blossom here.

However, we know it can be hard to keep abreast of everything that’s happening in the cultural sector - exhibitions, concerts, classes, plays, lectures, art walks, flm screenings, poetry readings, and more. And with such a diversity of galleries, museums, nonproft organizations, and creative individuals active in our community, sometimes seeing the forest for the trees can be a challenge. But we believe there’s something invaluable about tapping into the island’s creative spirit. We also believe that it should be easier to do. That’s why Arts & Humanities Bainbridge is introducing Currents Online.

Starting in June, Currents Online will make it possible for the frst time to experience the full breadth and depth of Bainbridge Island’s creative culture in one easy-to-use resource. Never want to miss an event or performance again? Visit the interactive events calendar and sign up for the weekly Currents Online newsletter. Curious about all the island’s artists, musicians, and performers? Discover your neighbor’s creative genius in the Artist Directory. Ever wondered about the sculptures and murals you’ve seen around town? Explore the island through the Public Art portal. Want to land the lead in the next play or fnd a bass player for your new band? Get connected to a wealth of opportunities and resources. Currents Online will ofer you these tools and much more. Best of all, every part of the platform is free to use.

All the elements of the island’s cultural sector are interwoven. You should be able to experience them that way. You already know and love parts of our creative community. Now with Currents Online, you can get to know the whole thing. Creativity connects us. Experience it.

CURRENTS ONLINE is coming June 13, 2019.

We are excited, as well, to present the premieres of two works by local composers: The frst, titled You’ll Find Me, was written by Genevieve Persen. Hand in Hand is Here to Stay Persen, who is a member of the Chorale as well as a composer, says of this work: “This piece is written for Mary Kouyoumdjian, a composer and a close friend, who suddenly lost her fancé, Matt Marks, a year ago, on May 11, 2018. Matt was also a well-known composer and musician. Together they created beauty in their music and in their community, celebrating and encouraging other artists to write fearlessly and authentically and to support one another… Here, again, Matt and Mary have managed to create musical collaboration without even knowing it.” The second is a piece for the tenor/bass ensemble, We Can See the Stars, by Chorale Artistic Director and composer, Michael Austin Miller. Miller was drawn to the text—which ruminates on starlight above the open sea—partly because of the bright skies above Bainbridge Island, surrounded by with limited ambient light. The text, by Amos R. Wells, is a brilliant allegory of sailors beholding the night sky, which becomes a source of introspection, peace, and hope for heaven. (Notes by Dr. Gary D. Cannon) If you’ve walked through Waterfront Park lately, you must have noticed Hand in Hand. The intricate textures, muscular angles, and The concert culminates in John Rutter’s luminous and gently consoling contemporary classic, Requiem, leading us to rest in eternal gentle curves of the sculpture’s twin basalt columns are impossible light. The Chorale will be accompanied by Heidi Swenson Napolitino, to miss. Created by local sculptor Will Robinson, the piece debuted fute: Lauren Urban, oboe; Karen Fardal, cello; Jennifer Burlingame, in its current location last summer as part of Something New, the harp; Elisabeth Ellis, organ; and Ian Alvarez, percussion.
